Hydroxyapatites modified with metal ions are the main inorganic components of bone tissue and are approved for use as components for biocomposites and coatings for surgical implants. This study examined prototypes of functional materials for bone implants based on hydroxyapatite modified with zinc ions. Zinc-modified hydroxyapatite was composed and synthesized. Using the XRD method, the phase composition was established. Using SEM, EPMA, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (BET) methods, surface properties were investigated. Antibacterial activity and biocompatibility have been established. The studied materials have antimicrobial activity; the samples did not cause significant changes in either the internal organs or the general condition of laboratory animals during the entire experiment.

The application of various materials in biomedical procedures has recently experienced rapid growth. One of the areas is the treatment of many of different types of bone-related diseases and disorders by using biodegradable polymer-ceramic composites. We have developed a material based on cryogel polyvinyl alcohol, mineralized with calcium phosphate. Composites were obtained by cyclic freezing-thawing, the synthesis of calcium phosphates was carried out in situ under the influence of microwave radiation with heating and stirring. The components of the composites were determined using the methods of IR-spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalyzer, as well as their morphology and surface properties. The biological compatibility of the material was investigated in vivo for a Wistar rat. The assessment of the quality of bone formation between the cryogel-based implant and the damaged bone was carried out by computed tomography. An improvement in the consolidation of the bone defect is observed in the bone with the composite in comparison with the control bone.

This study represents an advancement in the field of composite material engineering, focusing on the synthesis of composite materials derived from porous hydroxyapatite via surface modification employing cucurbit[n]urils, which are highly promising macrocyclic compounds. The surface modification procedure entailed the application of cucurbit[n]urils in an aqueous medium onto the hydroxyapatite surface. A comprehensive characterization of the resulting materials was undertaken, employing analytical techniques including infrared (IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subsequently, the materials were subjected to rigorous evaluation for their hemolytic effect, anti-inflammatory properties, and cytotoxicity. Remarkably, the findings revealed a notable absence of typical hemolytic effects in materials incorporating surface-bound cucurbit[n]urils. This observation underscores the potential of these modified materials as biocompatible alternatives. Notably, this discovery presents a promising avenue for the fabrication of resilient and efficient biocomposites, offering a viable alternative to conventional approaches. Furthermore, these findings hint at the prospect of employing supramolecular strategies involving encapsulated cucurbit[n]urils in analogous processes. This suggests a novel direction for further research, potentially unlocking new frontiers in material engineering through the exploitation of supramolecular interactions.

Surface modification with the plasma of the direct current reactive magnetron sputtering has demonstrated its efficacy as a tool for enhancing the biocompatibility of polymeric electrospun scaffolds. Improvement of the surface wettability of materials with water, as well as the formation of active chemical bonds in the near-surface layers, are the main reasons for the described effect. These surface effects are also known to increase the release rate of drugs incorporated in fibers. Herein, we investigated the effect of plasma modification on the chloramphenicol release from electrospun poly (lactic acid) fibrous scaffolds. Scaffolds with high—50 wt./wt.%—drug content were obtained. It was shown that plasma modification leads to an increase in the drug release rate and drug diffusion coefficient, while not deteriorating surface morphology and mechanical properties of scaffolds. The materials’ antibacterial activity was observed to increase in the first day of the experiment, while remaining on the same level as the unmodified group during the next six days. The proposed technique for modifying the surface of scaffolds will be useful for obtaining drug delivery systems with controlled accelerated release, which can expand the possibilities of local applications of antibiotics and other drugs.

In this present investigation, a novel series of composite materials based on porous inorganic compounds—hydroxyapatite and diatomite—have been innovatively formulated for the first time through surface modification employing the promising macromolecular compound, bambus[6]uril. The process entailed the application of a bambus[6]uril dispersion in water onto the surfaces of hydroxyapatite and diatomite. Extensive characterization was carried out, involving IR spectroscopy and SEM. The materials underwent assessment for hemolytic effects and plasma protein adsorption. The results revealed that materials containing surface-bound bambus[6]uril did not demonstrate inherent hemolytic effects, laying a robust groundwork for their use as biocompatible materials. These findings hold significant promise as an alternative pathway for the development of durable and efficient bio-composites, potentially unveiling supramolecular strategies incorporating encapsulated bambus[6]urils in analogous processes.

An urgent problem of modern medicine is the problem of treatment of infected wounds, which is associated with the prevalence of wounds of various etiologies, purulent complications, high mortality, and high material costs of treatment. For the treatment of wounds most often used local effects of drugs, in particular, use a variety of coatings and dressings. Types of these dressings are quite diverse. They can be created on the basis of bioresorbable materials, contain other therapeutic substances such as enzymes, anesthetics, antibiotics in order to have a complex effect on the wound healing process. The choice of optimal local wound coatings or their effective combinations with physiotherapeutic methods of treatment of local superficial and deep wounds and prevention of wound infection remains an unsolved problem. In this regard, the creation of new wound healing preparations and wound coatings based on them seems to be very relevant. At the moment, there are many biologically active substances suitable for the therapy of wounds and burns. These substances can have a variety of origins - both synthetic and natural. Recently, the attention of specialists to drugs of natural origin is constantly growing. Interest in the use of such drugs is justified by their high efficiency, the lack of the need for complex synthesis, a wide range of pharmacological activity, as well as the possibility of using them for a long time without complications and side effects. The specific weight and volume of production of medicines obtained by synthetic transformations of substances extracted from wild and cultivated plants is increasing worldwide. Substances of plant origin are now increasingly being used in medical products for a wide range of purposes. One of such substances are derivatives of natural pentacyclic triterpenoid betulin extracted from birch bark. Betulin and its derivatives have high biological activity. This substance and its derivatives exhibit a complex of biologically active properties such as wound healing, antibacterial, antitumor, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, antiviral and others. Betulin, overcoming resistance, induces apoptosis of malignized cells in various human cancers. It should also be noted that sufficient raw material base and biological activity of betulin put it in a number of valuable natural sources for use both in the native state and in the form of various transformation products, which makes it relevant to develop drugs based on it.
