The growing need of responsiveness for manufacturing companies facing market volatility raises a strong demand for flexibility in their organisation. Since the company personnel are increasingly considered as the core of the organisational structures, a strong and forward-looking management of human resources and skills is crucial to performance in many industries. These organisations must develop strategies for the short, medium and long terms, in order to preserve and develop skills. Responding to this importance, this work presents an original model, looking at the line-up of multi-period project, considering the problem of staff allocation with two degrees of flexibility. The first results from the annualising of working time, and relies on policies of changing schedules, individually as well as collectively. The second degree of flexibility is the versatility of the operators, which induces a dynamic view of their skills and the need to predict changes in individual performance as a result of successive assignments. We are firmly in a context where the expected durations of activities are no longer predefined, but result from the performance of the operators selected for their execution. We present a mathematical model of this problem, which is solved by a genetic algorithm. An illustrative example is presented and analysed, and, the robustness of the solving approach is investigated using a sample of 400 projects with different characteristics.

The amount of multimedia content is growing exponentially and a major portion of multimedia content uses images and video. Researchers in the computer vision community are exploring the possible directions to enhance the system accuracy and reliability, and these are the main requirements for robot vision-based systems. Due to the change of facial expressions and the wearing of masks or sunglasses, many face recognition systems fail or the accuracy in recognizing the face decreases in these scenarios. In this work, we contribute a real time surveillance framework using Raspberry Pi and CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) for facial recognition. We have provided a labeled dataset to the system. First, the system is trained upon the labeled dataset to extract different features of the face and landmark face detection and then it compares the query image with the dataset on the basis of features and landmark face detection. Finally, it compares faces and votes between them and gives a result that is based on voting. The classification accuracy of the system based on the CNN model is compared with a mid-level feature extractor that is Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) and the state-of-the-art face detection and recognition methods. Moreover, the accuracy in recognizing the faces in the cases of wearing a mask or sunglasses or in live videos is also evaluated. The highest accuracy achieved for the VMU, face recognition, and 14 celebrity datasets is 98%, 98.24%, 89.39%, and 95.71%, respectively. Experimental results on standard image benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed research in accurate face recognition compared to the state-of-the-art face detection and recognition methods.

The automatic detection of blood cell elements for identifying morphological deformities is still a challenging research domain. It has a pivotal role in cognition and detecting the severity level of disease. Using a simple microscope, manual disease detection, and morphological disorders in blood cells is mostly time-consuming and erroneous. Due to the overlapped structure of RBCs, pathologists face challenges in differentiating between normal and abnormal cell shape and size precisely. Currently, convolutional neural network-based algorithms are effective tools for addressing this issue. Existing techniques fail to provide effective anemia detection, and severity level prediction due to RBCs’ dense and overlapped structure, non-availability of standard datasets related to blood diseases, and severity level detection techniques. This work proposed a three tier deep convolutional fused network (3-TierDCFNet) to extract optimum morphological features and identify anemic images to predict the severity of anemia. The proposed model comprises two modules: Module-I classifies the input image into two classes, i.e., Healthy and Anemic, while Module-II detects the anemia severity level and categorizes it into Mild or Chronic. After each tier’s training, a validation function is employed to reduce the inappropriate feature selection. To authenticate the proposed model for healthy, anemic RBC classification and anemia severity level detection, a state-of-the-art anemic and healthy RBC dataset was developed in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Hospital and Research Center (SKMCH&RC), Pakistan. To evaluate the proposed model, the training, validation, and test accuracies were computed along with recall, F1-Score, and specificity. The global results reveal that the proposed model achieved 91.37%, 88.85%, and 86.06% training, validation, and test accuracies with 98.95%, 98.12%, and 98.12% recall F1-Score and specificity, respectively.

Currently, manufacturing companies are facing market volatility. To gain such market competition, organisations should respond quickly to customers’ needs by reducing lead times, or/and lowering their operating costs. These organisations usually select performance improvement initiatives to enhance their internal processes and handle such working challenges. Many of the available approaches can be implemented for manufacturing process improvements e.g. Lean, Six Sigma and Total Productive Maintenance. The appropriate selection for the most suitable approach(es) can be appreciated especially before utilising or investing resources. The current paper introduces an integrated model to support manufacturing organisations in selecting and managing the suitable performance improvement initiative(s). The proposed model combines balanced scorecard, Theory Of Constraints and DEMATEL method. The model is adopted by a home appliance manufacturing firm located in Egypt starting from mid-2014 to achieve the firm goals, and to support operations managers to select and manage the suitable improvement initiatives using DEMATEL method. Significant results related to improving production rate by 6.22%, improving machines reliability through increasing mean time between failures, and reducing manufacturing costs due to reducing defects were reported during executives’ review meetings.

Forest fires destroy productive land throughout the world. In Brazil, mainly the Northeast of Brazil (NEB) is strongly affected by forest fires and bush fires. Similarly, there is no adequate study of long-term data from ground and satellite-based estimation of fire foci in NEB. The objectives of this study are: (i) to evaluate the spatiotemporal estimation of fires in NEB biomes via environmental satellites during the long term over 1998–2018, and (ii) to characterize the environmental degradation in the NEB biomes via orbital products during 1998–2018, obtained from the Burn Database (BDQueimadas) for 1794 municipalities. The spatiotemporal variation is estimated statistically (descriptive, exploratory and multivariate statistics) from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) through the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation Station (CHIRPS). Moreover, we identify 10 homogeneous groups of fire foci (G1–G10) with a total variance of 76.5%. The G1 group is the most extended group, along with the G2 group, the exception being the G3 group. Similarly, the G4–G10 groups have a high percentage of hotspots, with more values in the municipality of Grajaú, which belongs to the agricultural consortium. The gradient of fire foci from the coast to the interior of the NEB is directly associated with land use/land cover (LULC) changes, where the sparse vegetation category and areas without vegetation are mainly involved. The Caatinga and Cerrado biomes lose vegetation, unlike the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes. The fires detected in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes are the result of agricultural consortia. Additionally, the two periods 2003–2006 and 2013–2018 show periods of severe and prolonged drought due to the action of El Niño.

Human physical activity recognition from inertial sensors is shown to be a successful approach for monitoring elderly individuals and children in indoor and outdoor environments. As a result, researchers have shown significant interest in developing state-of-the-art machine learning methods capable of utilizing inertial sensor data and providing key decision support in different scenarios. This paper analyzes data-driven techniques for recognizing human daily living activities. Therefore, to improve the recognition and classification of human physical activities (for example, walking, drinking, and running), we introduced a model that integrates data preprocessing methods (such as denoising) along with major domain features (such as time, frequency, wavelet, and time–frequency features). Following that, stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is used to improve the performance of the extracted features. The selected features are catered to the random forest classifier to detect and monitor human physical activities. Additionally, the proposed HPAR system was evaluated on five benchmark datasets, namely the IM-WSHA, PAMAP-2, UCI HAR, MobiAct, and MOTIONSENSE databases. The experimental results show that the HPAR system outperformed the present state-of-the-art methods with recognition rates of 90.18%, 91.25%, 91.83%, 90.46%, and 92.16% from the IM-WSHA, PAMAP-2, UCI HAR, MobiAct, and MOTIONSENSE datasets, respectively. The proposed HPAR model has potential applications in healthcare, gaming, smart homes, security, and surveillance.
