Water is a quintessential element for the survival of mankind. Its variety of uses means that it is always in a constant state of demand. The supply of water most primarily comes from large reservoirs of water such as lakes, streams, and the ocean itself. As such, it is good practice to monitor its quality to ensure it is fit for human consumption. Current water quality monitoring is often carried out in traditional labs but is time consuming and prone to inaccuracies. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the feasibility of implementing an Arduino-based sensor system for water quality monitoring. A simple prototype consisting of a microcontroller and multiple attached sensors was employed to conduct weekly onsite tests at multiple daily intervals. It was found that the system works reliably but is reliant on human assistance and prone to data inaccuracies. The system however, provides a solid foundation for future expansion works of the same category to elevate the system to being Internet of Things (IoT) friendly.

A simple hexagonal lattice photonic crystal fiber model with liquid-infiltrated core for different liquids: water, ethanol and benzene, has been proposed. In the proposed structure, three air hole rings are present in the cladding and three equal sized air holes are present in the core. Numerical investigation of the proposed fiber has been performed using full vector finite element method with anisotropic perfectly match layers, to show that the proposed simple structure exhibits high relative sensitivity, high power fraction, relatively high birefringence, low chromatic dispersion, low confinement loss, small effective area, and high nonlinear coefficient. All these properties have been numerically investigated at a wider wavelength regime 0.6–1.8 μm within mostly the IR region. Relative sensitivities of water, ethanol and benzene are obtained at 62.60%, 65.34% and 74.50%, respectively, and the nonlinear coefficients are 69.4 W−1 km−1 for water, 73.8 W−1 km−1 for ethanol and 95.4 W−1 km−1 for benzene, at 1.3 µm operating wavelength. The simple structure can be easily fabricated for practical use, and assessment of its multiple waveguide properties has justified its usage in real liquid detection.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has had a big impact on both industry and academia. Its profound impact is particularly felt in the industrial sector, where the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), also known as Industry 4.0, is revolutionizing manufacturing and production through the fusion of cutting-edge technologies and network-embedded sensing devices. The IIoT revolutionizes several industries, including crucial ones such as oil and gas, water purification and distribution, energy, and chemicals, by integrating information technology (IT) with industrial control and automation systems. Water, a vital resource for life, is a symbol of the advancement of technology, yet knowledge of potential cyberattacks and their catastrophic effects on water treatment facilities is still insufficient. Even seemingly insignificant errors can have serious consequences, such as aberrant pH values or fluctuations in the concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCI) in water, which can result in fatalities or serious diseases. The water purification and distribution industry has been the target of numerous hostile cyber security attacks, some of which have been identified, revealed, and documented in this paper. Our goal is to understand the range of security threats that are present in this industry. Through the lens of IIoT, the survey provides a technical investigation that covers attack models, actual cases of cyber intrusions in the water sector, a range of security difficulties encountered, and preventative security solutions. We also explore upcoming perspectives, illuminating the predicted advancements and orientations in this dynamic subject. For industrial practitioners and aspiring scholars alike, our work is a useful, enlightening, and current resource. We want to promote a thorough grasp of the cybersecurity landscape in the water industry by combining key insights and igniting group efforts toward a safe and dependable digital future.

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) have become increasingly popular due to their ability to achieve state-of-the-art performance on various natural language processing tasks with less training data and time. However, they struggle when dealing with code-mixed data, characterized by colloquial language and inconsistent linguistic forms. This limitation arises because most available PLMs are trained monolingually or for individual languages. Furthermore, the availability of PLMs specifically designed for code-mixed text remains limited, especially for low-resource languages like Indonesian (ID) and Javanese (JV). Despite the significant number of speakers of these languages, both languages are underrepresented in the field of natural language processing. To address these issues, this study introduces IndoJavE, a series of pre-trained language models specifically designed for mixing languages between Indonesian (ID), Javanese (JV), and English (EN) texts. We developed four transformer-based models, IndoJavE-BERT, IndoJavE-RoBERTa, IndoJavE-IndoBERTweet, and IndoJavE-IndoBERT, using two approaches: training from scratch and transfer learning. Our results show that transfer learning is more efficient and effective than training from scratch. The IndoJavE models outperformed multilingual and monolingual models in various downstream NLP tasks, highlighting the importance of specialized pre-trained models for handling code-mixed texts. This study paves the way for future research directions, including exploring the models’ performance in diverse NLP tasks and developing more versatile pre-trained language models that can adapt to a broader range of code-mixed languages and dialects.

Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) face dual imperatives: protecting critical infrastructure from escalating cybersecurity threats while reducing the environmental impact of AI-powered defense mechanisms. Current deep learning anomaly detection approaches achieve security performance but consumes substantial computational resources, creating an environmental paradox in which AI solutions designed to protect infrastructure contribute to carbon emissions at scale. This competition between cybersecurity effectiveness and sustainability objectives intensifies as regulatory frameworks increasingly mandate both security resilience and environmental accountability. This research presents Green-USAD, a sustainability-first AI framework that inverts traditional design paradigms by integrating energy efficiency as a primary architectural constraint from inception rather than applying compression retrospectively. The proposed approach advances green computing for critical infrastructure through four key contributions: (1) a compressed architecture with validation-guided convergence protocols achieving competitive detection performance with minimal computational overhead; (2) a multi-objective optimization framework using the Analytic Hierarchy Process to systematically balance security and sustainability requirements; (3) a hardware-validated energy measurement methodology addressing reproducibility challenges in green AI literature; and (4) a comprehensive evaluation demonstrating cross-datasets and edge-deployment viability. Validation on ICS benchmarks demonstrates that sustainability-first design achieves substantial energy reduction while maintaining operational detection accuracy, with measured training consumption below 1% of conventional approaches and proportional carbon emission reductions. Comparative analysis against post hoc compression baselines establishes fundamental advantages of design-from-inception over train-then-compress paradigms. Edge device deployment on resource-constrained hardware confirms real-world applicability for distributed industrial environments. Results establish that robust cybersecurity and environmental sustainability represent unified rather than competing objectives when intelligent systems are designed with sustainability as a foundational principle.
