As physical mobility finds itself impeded by the COVID-19 crisis, the world witnesses the potential of technology for connecting students who are physically distanced inside and cross-borders. In such scenarios, telecollaboration and virtual exchange have gained increased attention as powerful pedagogical strategies to allow for the continuity of intercultural exchanges and understanding the trends of this growing field can be of high significance to practitioners when planning future related initiatives. Although telecollaboration and virtual exchange are not new phenomena, to the best of our knowledge, a thorough bibliometric study of the area, considering the characteristics of its publications and its scientific community, has not yet been developed. This study carried out a bibliometric analysis of the telecollaboration and virtual exchange research field using a set of 254 articles from the Web of Science and Scopus databases with the objective of characterising the area as well as identifying research tendencies. In particular, this study uses four analytical scientometric tools: co-citation, co-authorship, keywords co-occurrence analysis and identification of research trends. This study identified emerging and declining themes in the field of telecollaboration and virtual exchange, confirming that the practice is increasingly adopting diverse formats and cutting across different knowledge fields. In addition, results showed that international collaboration so far involves few countries and there is much space to widen co-authorship networks to enhance intercultural exchanges. The review also explores the benefits and drawbacks of the technological tools adopted in the studies from our sample database.

This study carried out a bibliometric analysis to critically review the evolution of the agri-food supply chain (AFSC) research field over the period of 2008–2019. A set of 1236 articles was analyzed from the Web of Science database. Besides using different analytical scientometric tools (topic mapping, co-citation, co-authorship and overlay visualization networks), this study identified frequently-used keywords, new and hot research topics and frequently-studied supply chain management (SCM) practices. Frequently used keywords are food supply chain, food waste, sustainability, food safety, SCM, food industry, and food security. New research themes include contract, blockchain, internet of things, resilience, and short food supply chain, a topic that demands further research especially due to the international COVID-19 pandemic and the need of farmers to be closer to the consumers. Hot research topics, that is, subjects that have been studied in highly cited papers were also identified include life cycle assessment, environmental impact, packaging, water use, food waste prevention, food waste generation, blockchain and carbon footprint. Among SCM practices, this study observed that risk and sustainable SCM are frequently used keywords. Procurement and reverse logistics were observed in fewer studies. SCM, food waste, food quality, GHG emissions and risk management are sustainable SCM practices frequently observed.

There has recently been great concern with the performance of science and technology parks (STPs). This paper proposes a reference model for the strategic performance management of STPs built on the theoretical bases of service dominant logic and the balanced scorecard. We conducted a survey of the strategic managers and owners of 84 firms located in 15 different STPs in Brazil. The research model was validated using Structural Equation Modeling. The results validated a set of performance indicators in a management model that can be used to better manage these endeavors.

This paper reports the focus group results administered with top executives of the Brazilian retailers regarding their omnichannel strategies. This study aimed at analyzing the process of implementing omnichannel strategies and identifying contributions omnichannel has to sustainability. Using qualitative exploratory and a case study design to assess three large Brazilian retailers, we collected information concerning omnichannel implementation associated with processes, technologies, and organizational structure. This study was conducted with top executives in Brazil. Results suggest that the most viable solution, given a company’s investment capacity, is implementing an e-commerce platform that results in greater integration, profitability, and sustainability of the whole chain. A discussion on the benefits and outcomes related to the sustainable performance of such companies is also presented. This study answers calls for more research on the retail sector in Latin American countries.

This study characterized required skills and competences for data specialist roles by analysing job advertisements for data scientists and other related professionals. It was performed using a content analysis technique named centring resonance analysis (CRA). With the support of this technique, demanded skills were grouped into categories that allow a better understanding of each role as well as differences and similarities among roles were observed and analysed. This study also summarized our findings in an orientation framework to classify six data specialists' roles according to business and technical skills as well as to experience and educational demands. Professional experience seems, in general, to be more valued than academic background. This work sheds light on better differentiating job roles related to data science, which could guide companies that recruit such specialists by better defining job requirements. For universities, these findings support the development of new analytics and data science programs.

Although many organizations have been currently implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices, little is known about the required competencies for the professionals responsible for such practices. In order to fill in this research gap, based on the Stakeholder Theory, the objective of this study is to identify required competencies for a set of CSR-related professional job titles by analyzing job advertisements using the Centering Resonance Analysis technique. Besides, the study is aimed at comprehending differences and similarities among the distinct job denominations. This study found out that among the job titles analyzed, most job opportunities were found for Fundraising, Public Affairs and Sustainability. Such opportunities are usually for Mid-senior level and Expert professionals, although a considerable amount of job advertisements seek to hire interns. In terms of CSR dimensions, our study identified a predominance of Environment and Social dimensions. As far as professional competencies are concerned, the ones related to the business context and management seem to be more usual. For scholars, this work contributes to CSR research by identifying different competencies needed to perform CSR-related activities that could be used in the future to characterize professionals’ competencies in theoretical research models. For practitioners, this work could guide companies that need to recruit such professionals, who could better understand which competencies they should develop according to market demands. In conclusion, we expect this study contributes to development of CSR professionals’ competencies that will be used to overcome challenges faced by different types of organizations and the society.

Project Portfolio Management (PPM) is becoming a key competence for companies handling numerous projects simultaneously. PPM instructors have been largely unable to transform what is being taught into applicable skills. Gamification has been successfully applied in some educational environments and it has been increasingly applied in Management university courses. The objective of this study is to propose and assess a gamified strategy for teaching Project Portfolio Management to MBA students. The implementation of this gamified experience was carried out in 2018, 2019 and 2020 with 122 students. They were quite satisfied with the gamified experience and recognized that the Portfolio Game Experience contributed to learning different PPM techniques and processes, especially those associated with project prioritization and selection. Moreover, 100% of the respondents would recommend the course to a colleague. By qualitatively analyzing students’ feedback, this study has found out that the Portfolio Game Experience provided the students the practical experience of actively learning what they have seen in theory. Students also highlighted typical game characteristics that contribute to their learning, like the fact that the game is fun, challenging, motivating and interactive. When compared to other courses they have taken so far, students evaluate this experience as superior.

Due to its multidisciplinary and dynamic nature, it is challenging to design Software Engineering (SE) educational material. To do so, universities must consider the complex working environments; recent technologies; and tools and skills, in order to prepare students to fulfill the expectations of the software industry. This study was carried out in a Brazilian private university, specifically in courses called Interdisciplinary Software Project (ISP) of the SE major. These courses are project-based, conducted by two professors at the same time in classroom, following a Scrum-like process. The objective of this study was to characterize how students work and collaborate in a group environment where agile development is used as well as how their behavior reflect on the use of Software Configuration Management (SCM) practices. In order to achieve this objective, the study analyzed 38 students’ code repositories. This study has found out that students procrastinate sprint work, since 51% of the commits are performed when less than 20% of the sprint time is left. We have also observed that in 87% of the groups just one member is a top contributor and would harm the projects’ outcomes if he/she left the project. In terms of SCM practices, we have identified that most commits comprised changes in up to three files. Moreover, most commit messages are less than 10 words long. This could mean that students do not commit many alterations at the same time but could make better use of messages in order to facilitate the comprehension of alterations by other members.

Distance Education professionals have been constantly coming up with methods and techniques to increase student participation in an environment where learning happens continuously and asynchronously. An online discussion forum (ODF) is one of these mechanisms, but it will only be successful if students are willing to participate. Stimulating students is a challenge many institutions currently face. The objective of this study was to analyze the social interaction among participants in ODFs using Social Network Analysis. Knowing the characteristics of these networks and its participants is important to design actions to improve the use of ODFs. As a case study, data were collected from ODF logs of the majors in Business Administration and Accounting in a Brazilian private university. This study found out that these interaction networks are sparse, which shows that students could be more engaged in interacting and collaborating with others. Students, in general, tend to interact more in the first semester and interaction diminishes as time passes. The number of active ODF participants has been around 45–50%, which shows that students currently do not participate very often in ODFs. Their main incentive seems to exist when they are graded. Popular ODFs were also analyzed.

This article aims at characterizing the research community of Distance Education (DE) with respect to coauthorship, a special kind of collaboration among researchers, according to publications of 11 relevant DE journals. This article identified who the central researchers are, the topological properties of the coauthorship networks analyzed, the coauthorship patterns of each journal and the evolution of the DE community in the last 30 years. In order to achieve these goals, Social Network Analysis (SNA) was used, deriving centrality metrics, which depict the importance of researchers in the networks. This study found out that researchers who publish more papers are not necessarily the ones considered more central according to SNA. Besides, promising researchers, those linked to central researchers and are considered more likely to coauthor papers in the near future. Different coauthorship patterns among journals are described. Finally, a steep increase in the number of publications and coauthorships in the last decades was observed.

Big Data Analytics (BDA) has the potential to improve demand forecasting, communications and better manage supply chain resources. Despite such recognised benefits and the increase of BDA research, little is known about the general approaches used to investigate BDA in the context of supply chain management (SCM). In the light of the Resource-based View, the main goal of this study was, by means of a systematic literature review, to comprehend how BDA has been investigated on SCM studies, which resources are managed by BDA as well as which SCM processes are involved. Our study found out that the predictive and prescriptive approaches are more frequently used and organisational, technological and human resources are often managed by BDA. It was observed a focus on Demand Management and Order Fulfilment processes and a lack of studies on Returns Management, which indicates an open research area that should be exploited by future studies.

This work characterized the research community of supply chain analytics (SCA) with respect to coauthorship, a special kind of collaboration. A characterization of coauthorship in terms of researchers’ countries, institutions and individuals was elaborated, so three different one-mode networks were studied. Besides, the SCA research community is characterized in terms of Supply Chain Management (SCM) research streams. Coauthorship among researchers working on different streams is also analyzed. Metrics that depict the importance of the network nodes were studied such as degree, betweenness and closeness. This study found out an intense collaboration between USA and countries such as China, India, United Kingdom and Canada. Researchers from Canada and Ireland are better situated (central) in the network, although they have not published a considerable amount of papers. The presence of cliques and the small-world effect were also observed in these networks. In terms of research streams, more research on SCA located at the Strategic Management, Technology-focused and Logistics streams was found. The most common links between research streams are on the one side, Technology-focused with both Strategic Management and Logistics and on the other side Strategic Management with both Logistics and Organizational behavior. SCA researchers are rarely working with a focus on Marketing. This study contributes to the SCA literature by identifying the most central actors in this area and by characterizing the area in terms of SCM research streams. This study may contribute to the development of more focused research incentive programs and collaborations.

The historical strong emphasis on quantitative studies in supply chain management (SCM) is giving place to more qualitative studies. The execution of SCM activities as well as interactions among participants in the chains generates lots of information which can be analysed using qualitative methods. A common methodological problem in such analyses is how to move beyond specific linguistic material to generalisations. One method suited for this is centring resonance analysis (CRA), which allows the synthesis of texts into smaller categories. This article discusses the contributions and potential future use of CRA in SCM field by performing a systematic literature review in studies that adopted this technique. Results showed that CRA has been adopted in SCM since 2010 in order to analyse documents that vary from training materials and corporate social reports to interviews and software documentation. A characterisation of methods applied in conjunction with CRA is also provided.

Peer-to-peer, or simply P2P, systems have recently emerged as a popular paradigm for building distributed applications. One key aspect of the P2P system design is the mechanism used for content location. A number of different approaches are currently in use. In particular, the location algorithm used in Gnutella, a popular and extensively analyzed P2P file sharing application, is based on flooding of messages in the network, which results in significant processing overhead on the participant nodes and thus, poor performance. In this paper, we provide an extensive performance evaluation of alternative algorithms for content location and retrieval in P2P systems, in particular, the Freenet and Gnutella systems. We compare the original Freenet and Gnutella algorithms, a previously proposed interest-based algorithm and two new algorithms which also explore locality of interest among peers to efficiently allow content location. Unlike previous proposals, the new algorithms organize the peers into communities that share interests. Two peers are said to have common interest if they share some of the locally stored files. In order to evaluate the performance of these algorithms, we use a previously developed Freenet simulator and build a new Gnutella simulator, which includes several realistic system characteristics. We show that the new community-based algorithms improve the original Gnutella content location latency (and thus the system QoS) and system load by up to 31% and 30%, respectively. Our algorithms also reduce the average Freenet request and response path lengths by up to 39% and 31%, respectively. Furthermore, we show that, compared to the previously proposed interest-based algorithm, our new algorithms improve query latency by up to 27% without a significant increase in the load.
