Aim The Naples prognostic score (NPS) simultaneously evaluates inflammation and malnutrition, which are two main factors that play a role in the pathophysiology and prognosis of heart failure (HF). In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship of NPS with in-hospital mortality of hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of HF. Material and Methods   A total of 496 hospitalized HF patients included in this study. The patients were divided into two groups as deceased and living. The clinical and demographic characteristics of each patient were recorded. NPS of each patient was calculated. Results   NPS was significantly higher in the deceased group compared to the living group (3.6±0.61, 3.21±0.97, respectively; p=0.003). According to multivariate regression analysis: NPS (OR: 1.546, 95 % CI: 1.027–2.327; p=0.037), systolic blood pressure (OR: 0.976, 95 % CI: 0.957–0.995; p=0.015), and white blood cell count (OR: 1.072, 95 % CI: 1.007–1142; p=0.03) are independent predictors for in-hospital mortality in HF patients. Conclusion This study demonstrated a strong correlation between NPS and mortality in HF. This new score can be used to predict the prognosis of HF as it shows both the level of inflammation and nutrition.

Background and objectives: Hypertension is a global health problem and a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin D deficiency is closely related to high blood pressure and the development of hypertension. This study investigated the relationship between the vitamin D and blood pressure status in healthy adults, and their 8-year follow-up was added. Materials and Methods: A total of 491 healthy middle-aged participants without any chronic illness, ages 21 to 67 at baseline, were divided into two groups as non-optimal blood pressure (NOBP) and optimal blood pressure (OBP). NOBP group was divided into two subgroups: normal (NBP) and high normal blood pressure (HNBP). Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were measured with the immunoassay method. 8-year follow-up of the participants was added. Results: The average vitamin D level was detected 32.53 ± 31.50 nmol/L in the OBP group and 24.41 ± 14.40 nmol/L in the NOBP group, and a statistically significant difference was found (p < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, the mean vitamin D level was detected as 24.69 ± 13.74 and 24.28 ± 14.74 nmol/L in NBP and HNBP, respectively. Together with parathyroid hormone, other metabolic parameters were found to be significantly higher in the NOBP. During a median follow-up of 8 years, higher hypertension development rates were seen in NOBP group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The low levels of vitamin D were significantly associated with NBP and HNBP. The low levels of vitamin D were also associated with the development of hypertension in an 8-year follow-up.

The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is calculated from fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose levels and is an indicator of insulin resistance. The present study investigates whether the TyG index has a role in predicting clinical outcomes in cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This retrospective study included 646 patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and 1048 patients with non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The association between major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) that developed in-hospital and at 60 months of follow-up and TyG index values were compared. Patients were divided into 2 groups: TyG index values of ≥8.65 and <8.65. During the hospital stay and 60 months of follow-up, 303 MACEs occurred. In both the STEMI and NSTEMI groups, as the TyG index increased, an increase was observed in MACE rates. MACE rates were also found to be highest in the group with TyG index ≥8.65 ( P < .001). TyG index, C-reactive protein, and age were independent predictors of MACEs in both the NSTEMI and STEMI groups. The present study found a significant association between higher TyG index values and increased risk of MACEs in ACS patients. The TyG index may prove useful to predict clinical outcomes in ACS patients.

Resistin is a novel adipokine that is suggested to be involved in inflammatory conditions and atherosclerosis. To investigate the prognostic importance of resistin in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Resistin levels were measured in a population of 132 patients with AMI, of whom 72 (54%) had a diagnosis of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and 60 (46%) had non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Thirty-three consecutive subjects who were referred to elective coronary angiography due to chest pain evaluation with normal coronary angiograms served as controls. All patients were followed-up for the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE). There was a significant increase in serum resistin levels in patients with AMI compared to controls (3.71 ± 4.20 vs. 2.00 ± 1.05, p = 0.001, respectively). However, serum resistin levels were similar in patients with STEMI and NSTEMI. (4.26 ± 5.11 vs. 3.06 ± 2.64, p = 0.49, respectively). The patients with MACE had significantly higher levels of serum resistin levels compared to either the AMI or the control group (6.35 ± 5.47, p = 0.005, respectively). Logistic regression analysis revealed that resistin, left ventricular ejection fraction, and coronary artery bypass graft were independent predictors of MACE in AMI patients (OR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.01-1.22, p = 0.03 and OR = 3.84, 95% CI 1.26-11.71, p = 0.018, respectively). Serum resistin level was increased in patients with AMI and constituted a risk factor for MACE in this group.

Background: It is known that a wide frontal QRS‐T(f[QRS‐T]) angle in the electrocardiography (ECG) is associated with poor cardiovascular outcomes. The Tp‐e (the interval from the peak to the end of the T wave) interval and Tp‐e/QTc ratio show the dispersion of repolarization, and increased levels lead to ventricular arrhythmogenesis in congenital channelopathies and coronary heart disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between f(QRS‐T), Tp‐e interval, and Tp‐e/QTc ratio and SYNTAX score in stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) patients. Methods: A total of 403 patients who performed coronary angiography for SCAD were included. The study population was divided into two groups based on the SYNTAX score. Group 1 included 248 patients (high SYNTAX score > 0), and group 2 included 155 patients (low SYNTAX score = 0). SYNTAX score was calculated using an online SYNTAX score calculator from the coronary angiography images of each patient. The f(QRS‐T) angle (QRS angle minus T angle) was calculated from the automated reports of the 12‐lead ECG device. Tp‐e interval and Tp‐e/QTc ratio and other electrocardiographic parameters were recorded. Results: The mean SYNTAX score in group 1 was 8. F(QRS‐T) angle, Tp‐e duration, Tp‐e/QT, and Tp‐e/QTc were significantly higher in group 1 compared with group 2. In the multivariate regression analysis, F(QRS‐T) angle and Tp‐e duration were independent predictors for SYNTAX scores in SCAD patients. Conclusions: Our study showed that Tp‐e interval, Tp‐e/QTc ratio, and f(QRS‐T) angle were increased in patients with higher SYNTAX scores in patients with SCAD patients.
