A tin oxide (SnO2) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid composite gas sensor for high-performance carbon dioxide (CO2) gas detection at room temperature was studied. Since it can be used independently from a heater, it emerges as a promising candidate for reducing the complexity of device circuitry, packaging size, and fabrication cost; furthermore, it favors integration into portable devices with a low energy density battery. In this study, SnO2-rGO was prepared via an in-situ chemical reduction route. Dedicated material characterization techniques including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were conducted. The gas sensor based on the synthesized hybrid composite was successfully tested over a wide range of carbon dioxide concentrations where it exhibited excellent response magnitudes, good linearity, and low detection limit. The synergistic effect can explain the obtained hybrid gas sensor’s prominent sensing properties between SnO2 and rGO that provide excellent charge transport capability and an abundance of sensing sites.

Oxide semiconductors are conventionally used as sensing materials in gas sensors, however, there are limitations on the detection of gases at room temperature (RT). In this work, a hybrid of copper oxide (CuO) with functionalized graphene (rGO) is proposed to achieve gas sensing at RT. The combination of a high surface area and the presence of many functional groups in the CuO/rGO hybrid material makes it highly sensitive for gas absorption and desorption. To prepare the hybrid material, a copper oxide suspension synthesized using a copper acetate precursor is added to a graphene oxide solution during its reduction using ascorbic acid. Material properties of the CuO/rGO hybrid and its drop-casted thin-films are investigated using Raman, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and four-point probe measurement systems. We found that the hybrid material was enriched with oxygen functional groups (OFGs) and defective sites, along with good electrical conductivity (Sheet resistance~1.5 kΩ/□). The fabricated QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) sensor with a thin layer of the CuO/rGO hybrid demonstrated a high sensing response which was twice the response of the rGO-based sensor for CO2 gas at RT. We believe that the CuO/rGO hybrid is highly suitable for existing and future gas sensors used for domestic and industrial safety.

Mapping is one of the elemental application of the mobile robot. The map is created using the mobile robot by employing sensors such as camera, sonar and laser sensor. One of the most popular mapping methods is the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). SLAM allows the map to be created while localizing the robot location in the map at the same time. GMapping is one of the widely used algorithms in SLAM which will be used in this project. The mobile robot is equipped with a Hokuyo Laser Range Finder sensor and netbook. The router is used for wireless communication between the mobile robot and the user. The GMapping is done in two different locations of different lab size and amount of features in the area. Three trial is conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters such as robot speed, mapping delay and particle filter on the mapping quality. The results show a significant difference in terms of mapping accuracy and the time taken to complete the process as the parameter changed from the three trial. As a result, the parameter used in the second trial, robot speed 0.1333m/s, mapping delay 1s and particle filter 30 is considered as the best based on the time taken and the map accuracy.

The demand for carbon dioxide (CO2) gas detection is increasing nowadays. However, its fast detection at room temperature (RT) is a major challenge. Graphene is found to be the most promising sensing material for RT detection, owing to its high surface area and electrical conductivity. In this work, we report a highly edge functionalized chemically synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin films to achieve fast sensing response for CO2 gas at room temperature. The high amount of edge functional groups is prominent for the sorption of CO2 molecules. Initially, rGO is synthesized by reduction of GO using ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent. Three different concentrations of rGO are prepared using three AA concentrations (25, 50, and 100 mg) to optimize the material properties such as functional groups and conductivity. Thin films of three different AA reduced rGO suspensions (AArGO25, AArGO50, AArGO100) are developed and later analyzed using standard FTIR, XRD, Raman, XPS, TEM, SEM, and four-point probe measurement techniques. We find that the highest edge functionality is achieved by the AArGO25 sample with a conductivity of ~1389 S/cm. The functionalized AArGO25 gas sensor shows recordable high sensing properties (response and recovery time) with good repeatability for CO2 at room temperature at 500 ppm and 50 ppm. Short response and recovery time of ~26 s and ~10 s, respectively, are achieved for 500 ppm CO2 gas with the sensitivity of ~50 Hz/µg. We believe that a highly functionalized AArGO CO2 gas sensor could be applicable for enhanced oil recovery, industrial and domestic safety applications.

Malaysia is blessed with abundant water resources such as sea and inland freshwaters which has enormous potential in providing with more healthful and nutritious food through aquaculture. Aquaculture has also been identified as a priority sector in the development of Malaysia’s economy in contribution to nation ‘food security”. With forecasted population expansion, demand is anticipated to continue to increase. This research is about developing an Internet of Things (IoT) system to monitor the quality of freshwater for aquatic species in Malaysia. Dramatic changes in local weather and climate have also significantly affect in aquaculture water quality resulted in many fish dying and fish farmers suffering production losses. The traditional method in checking water quality is time-consuming and expensive since it requires manual sample to be send to lab. However, with the advent of the IoT system, user can real time and observe the current state of water quality anywhere by using its own website or application. The IoT system will consists of several parts, namely a database to store data, node red application apps, sensors, components, and circuits. This IoT system is capable to detect the rate of water turbidity, the quantity of air in the water and the quantity of pH. The system has been tested thoroughly in terms of several lake locations in UTP and 2 fish farms located in Pahang. The sensors were calibrated accurately with the amount of standard deviation below 2. This developed system will enable fish farmers to monitor their aquaculture products real time and effectively.

Graphene has been extensively investigated in the context of electronic components due to its attractive properties, such as high carrier mobility and saturation velocity. In the past decade, the graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) has been considered one of the potential devices to be used in future radio frequency (RF) applications and can help usher in the Internet of Things and the 5G communication network. This review presents recent developments of GFETs in RF applications with a focus on components such as amplifiers, frequency multipliers, phase shifters, mixers, and oscillators. Initially, the figures of merit (FoMs) for the GFET are briefly described to understand how they affect these RF components. Subsequently, the FoMs of GFET-based RF components are compared with other non-GFET-based RF components. It is found that, due to its zero-band gap and ambipolar characteristics, GFETs are more suitable for use in frequency multiplier and phase shifter applications, outperforming non-GFET-based RF components. Finally, future research on GFETs themselves as well as GFET-based RF components is recommended. This review provides valuable insights into such components that could give rise to innovative applications in industry.
