Recent events such as Covid-19 vaccine distribution issues and the blockage of the Ever Given ship in the Suez Canal raised concerns about how fragile the traditional supply chain is. Last-mile personalized fulfillment can have a catalyst role in the proliferation of the Industry 4.0. This growing trend will reduce standard production, bringing manufacturing closer to the client and, ultimately, boiling down the supply chain to the last mile. However, the literature is not clear about the breakdown of the supply chain to enhance cities’ sustainability and reducing the number of transports and circulating vehicles. Stemming from an empirical study to simulate the existing gap in the market and the development of a case study through structured interviews with privileged interlocutors complemented by the document analysis, this paper highlights how the integration of local stakeholders can efficiently enhance a personalized service based on dynamic collaborations to set up the supply chain, by introducing the Last-Mile-as-a-Service (LMaaS) concept. This concept relies on a revenue-sharing framework based on an open marketplace composed by last-mile manufacturing, transport, and storage assets and stakeholders to disrupt the supply chain, enabling any company to provide personalized products in almost real-time to any location.

Industry 4.0 and its application in the business has been the focus of attention by the academy, for its ability to establish principles of flexibility and connectivity along the shop floor. Meantime, because of a lean wave in the 1990’s, most of the western industry adopted principles, techniques and tools of lean production, whose results were quickly captured, guaranteed its adoption worldwide. Thus, with a view to turning traditional manufacturing companies into smart companies, it is essential to preserve the existing system and find ways for the two concepts (Lean and I4.0) to come together. This study was conducted based on a systematic literature review, using the Scopus database. The PRISMA process was the method used to select the articles. Finally, to analyze and discuss the results, the bibliometric analysis of the articles and content analysis were adopted. The results point to a greater impact of I4.0 technologies on lean, since it was perceived that I4.0 technologies give to lean tools a more dynamic way of working, accelerating information sharing processes and improving production manager’s and operator’s decision making. In the perspective of lean’s contribution to I4.0; however, there is little practical and theoretical application, thus the actual contribution is still somewhat blurred.

This study intends to examine the web accessibility of three tourism supply agents (hotels, travel agents and museums). The results obtained contribute to observing whether there are differences in levels of web accessibility among these tourism supply agents and, based on the problems identified, suggest strategies to overcome these problems. To evaluate the level of web accessibility of tourism supply agents, two automatic online tools (AccessMonitor and TAW), which consider Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), version 2.0, were used. To identify differences among the supply tourism agents in terms of the level of web accessibility, statistical tests (ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis) were used. All the tourism supply agents analysed reveal considerable problems related to web accessibility. The perceivable and robust principles are the two principles of WGAG 2.0 with the greatest number of failures. However, differences among the supply agents analysed are observed. Museums present the highest level of web accessibility, while travel agents have the lowest. Therefore, it is necessary to implement improvements in tourism websites to overcome informational constraints that many people with disabilities (PwD) face in tourism activities. Due to the central role of the Internet for people with and without disabilities, this study highlights barriers that should be eliminated to facilitate the travel decision-making process, especially for PwD. Consequently, it can contribute to a greater number of people being able to participate in tourism activities, improving their well-being and rehabilitation.

In the context of industry 4.0, management of knowledge represents a real challenge, since the tacit knowledge acquired by the expert operators is not transferred quickly and easily to newly arrived operators. This sharing of knowledge could help in the faster adaptation of humans to workstations and could bring the more agile accommodation of artificial intelligence techniques to allow the self-learning. The Business Process Management (BPM) is a technique which enables the representation and analysis of processes, has been already mention in the literature as a useful tool that can facilitate the Knowledge Management. A process repository can be accomplished with BPM, thus promoting agile and fast knowledge transfer in a context where new skills emerge and must be quickly taken up. This paper intends to show the development of the working instructions maps, with workers’ tacit knowledge, using the BPMN 2.0, in a chemical industry. This representation allowed the creation of a knowledge’s repository which will help the company (in a I4.0 environment) to deal with the most existing workforce rotation, thus preserving most of the knowledge within the company itself.

Haemophilia is a chronic and rare congenital bleeding disorder requiring treatment for life. An updated registry of data on this disease is of paramount importance for documenting prevalence, planning care, and evaluating effectiveness of resources in any country. The study presented in this paper is aimed at characterizing Portuguese patients’ clinical condition and demography, as well as the replacement therapy used in their treatment, based on [email protected] data, a technological solution that supports the National haemophilia registry. The analysis of 110 patients records confirmed the high prevalence of haemophilia A (75.5%) compared with haemophilia B (11.8%) and a large incidence in the severe levels (or the existence of people with mild severity without diagnosis and, consequently, without proper treatment) promoting insight about the portrayal of haemophilia in Portugal. This study should be extended as the registry evolves fostering an ever more efficient management of resources and ultimately a better quality of care for people with haemophilia.

Universities suffer from the impact of (1) life cycles associated with technological innovations, (2) the globalization of the economy and culture, (3) the educational needs of an increasingly knowledge-driven society, and (4) the training needs for high-performing professional activities. Solutions to these factors may be found in a positive attitude toward knowledge sharing and collaboration relationships. Collaboration has been considered a way to address the challenges of the 21st century, fostering the necessary innovation, growth, and productivity for all parties involved. Several studies reveal that collaboration can be strongly influenced by knowledge sharing. Collaboration relationships, besides the creation of new knowledge, may result in several outcomes and benefits for the university and society. This chapter aims to address and discuss the university challenges in the collaboration relationships with the industry based on the main results of some empirical studies developed during a research project.

This chapter aims to examine internet usage to plan a tourism trip by people with special needs (PwSN), particularly addressing differences in the intensity of internet usage according to their age and education level. To achieve these aims, a survey was applied to a sample of Portuguese people with special needs who have already undertaken tourism trips. Various bivariate statistical tests (chi-square, t test, ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis) were used to examine differences in internet usage according to respondents' age and education level. Results obtained reveal that the internet is the most important information source used by PwSN in planning their tourism trips. However, respondents report that they are not very satisfied with the online sources used. Moreover, online sources used to plan tourism activities vary according to PwSNs' age and education level.

This chapter examines the website accessibility of museums located in Portugal (N = 575), based on the web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0), and on the three type of conformance levels (A, AA, and AAA), using two web diagnostic tools: AccessMonitor and TAW (Test de Accessibilidad Web). The results show that the average accessibility of museum websites is 5.80 on a scale from 1 to 10. However, while according to AccessMonitor, there are 14 websites (2.43% of the total) with a level of accessibility of 10 (excellent web accessibility practices); there are also some websites with a global index lower than 3 (classified as bad practice). The results obtained through TAW show that an average of 58.43 problems were identified in each website analyzed. These results highlight that several improvements should be introduced in the websites of Portuguese museums in order to make information available to all people.

There is a clear need to address the technological effects of providing conditions for accessibility in tourism. Accessible tourism is becoming very important, and technology may be the tool which will surpass barriers to accessibility in tourism. New information technologies focus not just on the divulgation of information, but also on making sure everything is connected, which in the case of accessible tourism has significant value. Therefore, this chapter aims to share the results of a systematic literature review conducted on the topic of the impact of ICTs on accessible tourism. The research will be done via analysis of a range of bibliometric indicators present in the main academic and research databases. This approach will allow the characterization of the main technologies in the service of accessible tourism and an understanding of how they can enhance the quality of tourism experiences for people with disabilities.

This chapter describes how Tourism 4.0 is a concept that combines tourism and the fourth industrial revolution, and although the literature in this field is very scarce, this concept has been explored in some research projects, such as the government-sponsored research project in Slovenian tourism. People with various kinds of access requirements represent a combination of challenges and opportunities for the tourism industry. Tourism 4.0 set up the main goals of making tourism accessible to everyone at any time. Therefore, this new phenomenon may have an essential role in the development of accessible tourism. The adoption of technological components in accessible tourism enables the development of a new technological solution that can facilitate access to tourism products for disabled people, contributing to the development of accessible tourism. The new term [email protected] 4.0 is the answer to the role of the fourth industrial revolution in accessible tourism, emphasizing the effect of Industry 4.0 components in the tourism sector.

The advancement of the economy based on knowledge makes knowledge management critical for organizations. The traditional knowledge management systems have presented some shortcomings on their implementation and management. Social media have demonstrated that are not just a buzzword and have been used increasingly by the organizations as a knowledge management component. This chapter was developed aiming at exploring and critically reviewing the literature of social media use in organizational context as a knowledge management component. The review suggests that, while traditional knowledge management systems are static and often act just as knowledge repositories, social media have the potential for supporting different knowledge management processes that will impact on the organizational culture by encouraging on participation, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Despite their recognized impact on knowledge management processes, some uncertainty remains amongst researchers and practitioners and is associated to the difficulty in understanding and measuring their real impact.

Knowledge management is defined by different authors as the process that enables the sharing, capture and application of knowledge from the individual to the group and further to organizational level. The organizational atomization observed in the academia imposes importance in paying attention to a culture that encourages knowledge management and also assigns equal importance to the cooperation and the work in team. However, due to the different levels of heterogeneity among and within these organizations there is not just one model that fits well. Through a literature review on the knowledge management in the academia, the purpose of this chapter is an exploratory study that identifies the main cultural challenges in the development and implementation of a knowledge management system in the academic context.

A multiplicity of online information sources are used to plan, book, evaluate and share tourism experiences. However, a limited number of studies examine the online information sources used by the accessible tourism market. To extend knowledge in this field the present study analyses the heterogeneity in the Portuguese accessible tourism market regarding online information sources used, applying a survey to 504 people with special needs (PwSN). Six segments with different types of special needs (people with hearing disabilities – PwHD -, people with visual disabilities – PwVD -, people with motor disabilities – PwMoD -, people with mental disabilities – PwMeD -, people with multiple disabilities – PwMuD and people with other special needs – PwOSN) that had participated in tourism activities are studied regarding the information sources used in a tourism trip. Results highlight the relevance of the Internet as one of the most important information sources to plan a tourism trip. However, differences among the six segments were observable. Moreover, results reveal the need to provide accessible information sources to increase the participation of PwSN in tourism activities.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is characterized by cyber physical systems (CFS) and connectivity, paving the way to an end-to-end value chain, using Internet of Things (IoT) platforms supported on a decentralized intelligence in manufacturing processes. In such environments, large amounts of data are produced and there is an urgent need for organizations to take advantage of this data, otherwise its value may be lost. Data needs to be treated to produce consistent and valuable information to support decision-making. In the context of a manufacturing industry, both data analysis and visualization methods can drastically improve understanding of what is being done on the shop floor, enabling easier decision-making, ultimately reducing resources and costs. Visualization and storytelling are powerful ways to take advantage of human visual and cognitive capacities to simplify the business universe. This paper addresses the concept of “Storytelling with Data” and presents an example carried out in the shop floor of a chemical industry company meant to produce a real-time story about the data gathered from one of the manufacturing cells. The result was a streaming dashboard implemented using Microsoft Power BI.
