Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), as a microwave sensor that can sense a target all day or night under all-weather conditions, is of great significance for detecting water resources, such as coastlines, lakes and rivers. This paper reviews literature published in the past 30 years in the field of water body extraction in SAR images, and makes some proposals that the community working with SAR image waterbody extraction should consider. Firstly, this review focuses on the main ideas and characteristics of traditional water body extraction on SAR images, mainly focusing on traditional Machine Learning (ML) methods. Secondly, how Deep Learning (DL) methods are applied and optimized in the task of water-body segmentation for SAR images is summarized from the two levels of pixel and image. We also pay more attention to the most popular networks, such as U-Net and its modified models, and novel networks, such as the Cascaded Fully-Convolutional Network (CFCN) and River-Net. In the end, an in-depth discussion is presented, along with conclusions and future trends, on the limitations and challenges of DL for water-body segmentation.

To make effective anti-jamming measures, numerous jamming recognition methods have been proposed. This paper presents a systematic review of jamming recognition for this topic. Specifically, firstly building a system framework for jamming models, including deception jamming, suppression jamming, and smart jamming, thoroughly explaining the operational mechanisms. Then, recognition methods based on traditional machine learning are summarized, and delves into the advantages and disadvantages of feature extraction methods and classifiers. Furthermore, the focus shifts to neural network-based methods, such as shallow neural network methods and deep neural network methods. In particular, restricted sample strategies are also discussed as potential future directions. Finally, concluding on the current status of jamming recognition methods and the prospects for future work are made. This paper provides a reference for the research of radar jamming recognition.

Soil moisture is an important parameter affecting environmental processes such as hydrology, ecology, and climate. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) microwave remote sensing is an important means of farmland surface soil moisture (SSM) measurement. The inversion of farmland SSM by microwave remote sensing is greatly affected by vegetation cover. To address this problem, a multisource remote sensing inversion method of farmland SSM based on feature optimization and machine learning is proposed in this paper. Six typical machine learning algorithms suitable for small sample training, including random forest, radial basis function neural network, generalized regression neural network, support vector regression, genetic algorithm–back propagation neural network, and extreme learning machine, were selected in this paper. The features extracted from Sentinel-1/2 and Radarsat-2 remote sensing data were analyzed by Pearson correlation, and those with high correlation coefficients were selected to form the optimal feature subset as the input for the subsequent machine learning models. Then, the SSM collaborative inversion models under different machine learning algorithms were constructed, and comparative experiments were set up to select the optimal prediction model. The models’ accuracy under different feature parameters were studied, and the difference in the performance between the dual-polarization SAR data and the quad-polarization SAR data in SSM inversion was explored. The experimental results showed that among the six models, the random forest model had a higher inversion accuracy, with a coefficient of determination of 0.6395 and a root mean square error of 0.0264 cm3/cm3. Meanwhile, the inversion accuracy could be greatly improved after feature optimization, and the inversion accuracy of the quad-polarization SAR data combined with optical remote sensing data, was better than that of the dual-polarization SAR data combined with optical remote sensing data.

The traditional methods of jamming against synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which are implemented based on linear frequency-modulated (LFM) signals, are currently unable to meet the needs of electronic countermeasures. Compared with the LFM signal, the frequency of the nonlinear frequency-modulated (NLFM) signal varies nonlinearly with time. Because of this time-frequency structure, the NLFM signal is naturally mismatched with the linear matched filter of SAR; thus, a stronger and more flexible jamming effect is produced. In this paper, the NLFM signal is used in the SAR jamming field for the first time, and a smart jamming method against SAR based on the NLFM signal is proposed, which can produce the following two jamming effects: barrage and deceptive. First, the shaping factor is defined to generate the expected NLFM signal. The shaping factor controls the jamming range in the fast time direction for barrage jamming. For deceptive jamming, a jamming method involving piecewise weighting is proposed. The shaping factor is used to control the defocusing degree of false targets. Subsequently, the pulse compression results of the jamming signal are deduced, and the influence of different parameters on the jamming effect is theoretically analyzed. Experimental results based on simulation show that the method can control the jamming range and effect in the fast time direction while achieving a flexible deceptive jamming effect.

Crop type identification is the initial stage and an important part of the agricultural monitoring system. It is well known that synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Sentinel-1A imagery provides a reliable data source for crop type identification. However, a single-temporal SAR image does not contain enough features, and the unique physical characteristics of radar images are relatively lacking, which limits its potential in crop mapping. In addition, current methods may not be applicable for time-series SAR data. To address the above issues, a new crop type identification method was proposed. Specifically, a farmland mask was firstly generated by the object Markov random field (OMRF) model to remove the interference of non-farmland factors. Then, the features of the standard backscatter coefficient, Sigma-naught (σ0), and the normalized backscatter coefficient by the incident angle, Gamma-naught (γ0), were extracted for each type of crop, and the optimal feature combination was found from time-series SAR images by means of Jeffries-Matusita (J-M) distance analysis. Finally, to make efficient utilization of optimal multi-temporal feature combination, a new network, the convolutional-autoencoder neural network (C-AENN), was developed for the crop type identification task. In order to prove the effectiveness of the method, several classical machine learning methods such as support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), etc., and deep learning methods such as one dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) and stacked auto-encoder (SAE), etc., were used for comparison. In terms of quantitative assessment, the proposed method achieved the highest accuracy, with a macro-F1 score of 0.9825, an overall accuracy (OA) score of 0.9794, and a Kappa coefficient (Kappa) score of 0.9705. In terms of qualitative assessment, four typical regions were chosen for intuitive comparison with the sample maps, and the identification result covering the study area was compared with a contemporaneous optical image, which indicated the high accuracy of the proposed method. In short, this study enables the effective identification of crop types, which demonstrates the importance of multi-temporal radar images in feature combination and the necessity of deep learning networks to extract complex features.

Soil moisture is an important land environment characteristic that connects agriculture, ecology, and hydrology. Surface soil moisture (SSM) prediction can be used to plan irrigation, monitor water quality, manage water resources, and estimate agricultural production. Multi-source remote sensing is a crucial tool for assessing SSM in agricultural areas. The field-measured SSM sample data are required in model building and accuracy assessment of SSM inversion using remote sensing data. When the SSM samples are insufficient, the SSM inversion accuracy is severely affected. An SSM inversion method suitable for a small sample size was proposed. The alpha approximation method was employed to expand the measured SSM samples to offer more training data for SSM inversion models. Then, feature parameters were extracted from Sentinel-1 microwave and Sentinel-2 optical remote sensing data, and optimized using three methods, which were Pearson correlation analysis, random forest (RF), and principal component analysis. Then, three common machine learning models suitable for small sample training, which were RF, support vector regression, and genetic algorithm-back propagation neural network, were built to retrieve SSM. Comparison experiments were carried out between various feature optimization methods and machine learning models. The experimental results showed that after sample augmentation, SSM inversion accuracy was enhanced, and the combination of utilizing RF for feature screening and RF for SSM inversion had a higher accuracy, with a coefficient of determination of 0.7256, a root mean square error of 0.0539 cm3/cm3, and a mean absolute error of 0.0422 cm3/cm3, respectively. The proposed method was finally used to invert the regional SSM of the study area. The inversion results indicated that the proposed method had good performance in regional applications with a small sample size.
