Introduction and Background: Despite fast developments in the medical field, histological diagnosis is still regarded as the benchmark in cancer diagnosis. However, the input image feature extraction that is used to determine the severity of cancer at various magnifications is harrowing since manual procedures are biased, time consuming, labor intensive, and error-prone. Current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches for breast histopathology image classification take features from entire images (generic features). Thus, they are likely to overlook the essential image features for the unnecessary features, resulting in an incorrect diagnosis of breast histopathology imaging and leading to mortality. Methods: This discrepancy prompted us to develop DEEP_Pachi for classifying breast histopathology images at various magnifications. The suggested DEEP_Pachi collects global and regional features that are essential for effective breast histopathology image classification. The proposed model backbone is an ensemble of DenseNet201 and VGG16 architecture. The ensemble model extracts global features (generic image information), whereas DEEP_Pachi extracts spatial information (regions of interest). Statistically, the evaluation of the proposed model was performed on publicly available dataset: BreakHis and ICIAR 2018 Challenge datasets. Results: A detailed evaluation of the proposed model’s accuracy, sensitivity, precision, specificity, and f1-score metrics revealed the usefulness of the backbone model and the DEEP_Pachi model for image classifying. The suggested technique outperformed state-of-the-art classifiers, achieving an accuracy of 1.0 for the benign class and 0.99 for the malignant class in all magnifications of BreakHis datasets and an accuracy of 1.0 on the ICIAR 2018 Challenge dataset. Conclusions: The acquired findings were significantly resilient and proved helpful for the suggested system to assist experts at big medical institutions, resulting in early breast cancer diagnosis and a reduction in the death rate.

The scattering of atmospheric particles significantly alters images captured under hazy weather condition. Images appear distorted, blurry and low in contrast attenuation, which extensively affects computer vision systems. There has been development of several prior based methods to address this problem. However, these methods come at a high computational cost. We present a fast, single image dehazing method based on dark channel prior and Rayleigh scattering. Firstly, we present a simple but effective methodology for estimating the atmospheric light through the computation of average, minimum and maximum of the pixels in each of the three RGB colour channels. Then, using the theory of Rayleigh scattering, we model a scattering coefficient to estimate the initial transmission map. Also, a fast-guided filter is adopted to refine the initial transmission map due to inaccurate halo edges. Finally, we restore the haze-free image through the atmospheric scattering model. Extensive qualitative and computational experiments on hazy outdoor images demonstrate that the proposed method produces excellent results whiles achieving a faster processing time.

Natural disasters, such as floods, can cause significant damage to both the environment and human life. Rapid and accurate identification of affected areas is crucial for effective disaster response and recovery efforts. In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art (SOTA) computer vision models for flood image classification, by utilizing a semi-supervised learning approach on a dataset named FloodNet. To achieve this, we trained son 11 state-of-the-art (SOTA) models and modified them to suit the classification task at hand. Furthermore, we also introduced a technique of varying the uncertainty offset λ in the models to analyze its impact on the performance. The models were evaluated using standard classification metrics such as Loss, Accuracy, F1 Score, Precision, Recall, and ROC-AUC. The results of this study provide a quantitative comparison of the performance of different CNN architectures for flood image classification, as well as the impact of different uncertainty offset λ. These findings can aid in the development of more accurate and efficient disaster response and recovery systems, which could help in minimizing the impact of natural disasters.

Invasive carcinoma of no special type (IC-NST) is known to be one of the most prevalent kinds of breast cancer, hence the growing research interest in studying automated systems that can detect the presence of breast tumors and appropriately classify them into subtypes. Machine learning (ML) and, more specifically, deep learning (DL) techniques have been used to approach this problem. However, such techniques usually require massive amounts of data to obtain competitive results. This requirement makes their application in specific areas such as health problematic as privacy concerns regarding the release of patients’ data publicly result in a limited number of publicly available datasets for the research community. This paper proposes an approach that leverages federated learning (FL) to securely train mathematical models over multiple clients with local IC-NST images partitioned from the breast histopathology image (BHI) dataset to obtain a global model. First, we used residual neural networks for automatic feature extraction. Then, we proposed a second network consisting of Gabor kernels to extract another set of features from the IC-NST dataset. After that, we performed a late fusion of the two sets of features and passed the output through a custom classifier. Experiments were conducted for the federated learning (FL) and centralized learning (CL) scenarios, and the results were compared. Competitive results were obtained, indicating the positive prospects of adopting FL for IC-NST detection. Additionally, fusing the Gabor features with the residual neural network features resulted in the best performance in terms of accuracy, F1 score, and area under the receiver operation curve (AUC-ROC). The models show good generalization by performing well on another domain dataset, the breast cancer histopathological (BreakHis) image dataset. Our method also outperformed other methods from the literature.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many lives and the economies of many countries since late December 2019. Early detection with high accuracy is essential to help break the chain of transmission. Several radiological methodologies, such as CT scan and chest X-ray, have been employed in diagnosing and monitoring COVID-19 disease. Still, these methodologies are time-consuming and require trial and error. Machine learning techniques are currently being applied by several studies to deal with COVID-19. This study exploits the latent embeddings of variational autoencoders combined with ensemble techniques to propose three effective EVAE-Net models to detect COVID-19 disease. Two encoders are trained on chest X-ray images to generate two feature maps. The feature maps are concatenated and passed to either a combined or individual reparameterization phase to generate latent embeddings by sampling from a distribution. The latent embeddings are concatenated and passed to a classification head for classification. The COVID-19 Radiography Dataset from Kaggle is the source of chest X-ray images. The performances of the three models are evaluated. The proposed model shows satisfactory performance, with the best model achieving 99.19% and 98.66% accuracy on four classes and three classes, respectively.

The study of fault diagnosis and classification has gained tremendous attention in various aspects of modern industry. However, the performance of traditional fault diagnosis technique solely depends on handcrafted features based on expert knowledge which is difficult to pre-design and has failed in several applications. Deep learning (DL) has achieved remarkable performance in hierarchical feature extraction and learning distinctive feature of dataset from related distribution. However, the challenge associated with DL models is that max-pooling operation usually leads to loss of spatial details during high-level feature extraction. Another concern is the low quality characteristics of 2D time-frequency image which is mostly caused by the presence of noise and poor resolution. This paper proposes a modified wavelet convolutional capsule network with modified enhanced super resolution generative adversarial network plus for fault diagnosis and classification. It uses continuous wavelet transform to convert raw data signals to 2D time-frequency images and applies super resolution generative adversarial technique to enhance the quality of the time-frequency images and finally, the convolutional capsule network learns the extracted high-level features without loss of spatial details for the diagnosis and classification of faults. We validated our proposed model on the famous motor bearing dataset from the Case Western Reserve University. The experimental results show that our proposed fault diagnostic model obtains higher diagnosis accuracy of 99.84% outweighing most traditional deep learning models including state-of-the-art methods.
