Globally, the 2022 Pakistan mega-flood displaced over 33 million people and incurred economic losses exceeding $ 40 billion. By coupling seventy years of historical flood data with advanced machine learning techniques (GeoPINS within FloodCast), this study quantifies the event’s primary drivers and projects future risk under climate change. Results show that the 2022 monsoon, amplified by low-pressure systems, delivered 7–8 times the 1990–2020 mean rainfall, flooding over 2100 streams and breaching 177 check dams. In Balochistan alone, these dam failures caused 80–85% of the province’s economic losses. Spatial–spectral analysis reveals that monsoon intensification, infrastructural vulnerability, and orographic forcing collectively govern inundation patterns. Under the SSP5 scenario, the area of high flood risk zones is projected to expand by 6.62% by 2080, even when modeling data-scarce regions. These findings underscore an urgent need for climate-resilient dam design, strategic sediment management, and adaptive flood-risk governance in similar vulnerable areas.

The current study is focuses on a sustainable agricultural ecosystem for soil fertility and human health improvement. To estimate the effects of applying organic amendments (compost, vermicompost, biochar, organic manure and rapeseed cake) on crop growth of maize and nutrient uptake in calcareous soil, eleven treatments were studied, which included compost (CM), cow manure vermicompost (CMV), pig manure vermicompost (PMV), biochar vermicompost (BCV), biochar (BC), conventional synthetic fertilizers (NPK), CMV in addition to NPK (CMV + NPK), and PMV in addition to NPK (PMV + NPK), organic manure (OM), rapeseed cake (RC) and control without any fertilization (CK). Maize above and belowground biomass were analyzed in glass greenhouse experiments. The results showed that nitrogen and carbon contents showed significant differences among treatments. Vermicompost significantly showed higher biomass as compared to inorganic fertilizers except for RC. All vermicompost treatments also showed better nutrient availability as compared to NPK and CK. In conclusion, vermicompost with all substrates are recommended for application as organic fertilizers. Our study will help promote the application of organic fertilizers alone or in combination with inorganic fertilizers rather than only inorganic fertilizers for environmental health and sustainability.

When utilizing a finite volume method to predict outburst flood evolution in real geometry, the processing of wet-dry front and dry cells is an important step. In this paper, we propose a new approach to process wet-dry front and dry cells, including four steps: (1) estimating intercell properties; (2) modifying interface elevation; (3) calculating dry cell elevations by averaging intercell elevations; and (4) changing the value of the first term of slope limiter based on geometry in dry cells. The Harten, Lax, and van Leer with the contact wave restored (HLLC) scheme was implemented to calculate the flux. By combining the MUSCL (Monotone Upstream–centred Scheme for Conservation Laws)-Hancock method with the minmod slope limiter, we achieved second-order accuracy in space and time. This approach is able to keep the conservation property (C-property) and the mass conservation of complex bed geometry. The results of numerical tests in this study are consistent with experimental data, which verifies the effectiveness of the new approach. This method could be applied to acquire wetting and drying processes during flood evolution on structured meshes. Furthermore, a new settlement introduces few modification steps, so it could be easily applied to matrix calculations. The new method proposed in this study can facilitate the simulation of flood routing in real terrain.
