Background: Nanoimprinting lithography technique uses a very simple concept of transferring pattern of nanoscale features from a mold to a target substrate. In the past two decades, this technique has successfully broken through the barrier of laboratory scale production and become an industrial scale production technique. The aim of this paper is to introduce to readers to the basic working principle, applications, analysis the technological limitations. It will also point out future research direction of this useful nanofabrication technique. Methods: We adopted a systematic approach to give a comprehensive review of the work principle, hardware and analysis of advantaged and disadvantages of major nanoimprint lithography techniques. Moreover, a technical comparison of these methods is carried out to provide future research direction. Results: 87 papers were reviewed. Four techniques including thermal NIL, ultraviolet light NIL, laser-assisted direct imprint and nanoelectrode lithography have been identified as main stream of NIL techniques. These techniques possess certain advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, throughput, attainable resolution. Lack of flexibility is the common limitation of current NIL techniques. NIL has gained wide applications in the fabrication of optoelectronics devices, solar cells, memory devices, nanoscale cells, hydrophobic surfaces and bio-sensors. The potential applications of NIL in biochips, artificial organs, diagnostic system, and fundamental research in cell biology will demand large scale 3D fabrication capability with resolution towards 10nm or less. Conclusions: The findings of this review confirm that NIL is one of the most employed commercial platforms for nanofabrication which offers high throughput and cost-effectiveness. One of the disadvantages of NIL over other nanofabrication techniques is the flexibility of patterning. Integrating NIL with other existing nanofabrication techniques can be helpful to overcome such issue. The potential applications of NIL in biochips, artificial organs, diagnostic system, and fundamental research in cell biology will attract researchers to push nanoimprint lithography forward at a resolution of 10 nm or less in the future.

Optical interferometry plays an important role in the topographical surface measurement and characterization in precision/ultra-precision manufacturing. An appropriate surface reconstruction algorithm is essential in obtaining accurate topography information from the digitized interferograms. However, the performance of a surface reconstruction algorithm in interferometric measurements is influenced by environmental disturbances and system noise. This paper presents a comparative analysis of three algorithms commonly used for coherence envelope detection in vertical scanning interferometry, including the centroid method, fast Fourier transform (FFT), and Hilbert transform (HT). Numerical analysis and experimental studies were carried out to evaluate the performance of different envelope detection algorithms in terms of measurement accuracy, speed, and noise resistance. Step height standards were measured using a developed interferometer and the step profiles were reconstructed by different algorithms. The results show that the centroid method has a higher measurement speed than the FFT and HT methods, but it can only provide acceptable measurement accuracy at a low noise level. The FFT and HT methods outperform the centroid method in terms of noise immunity and measurement accuracy. Even if the FFT and HT methods provide similar measurement accuracy, the HT method has a superior measurement speed compared to the FFT method.

Cutting forces are often used to optimize cutting parameters and analyze cutting characteristics of the tool. Accurate prediction of cutting forces is critical to understand deeply of the cutting process, especially for helical milling of the difficult-to-cut materials. Generally, the cutting force coefficients are not affected by the cutting parameters in the end milling process, but due to the special cutting mechanism of helical milling, the change of the cutting force coefficients must be carefully studied. However, the identification of cutting force coefficients is very important to simulate cutting forces accurately, and the relationship between cutting force coefficient and cutting parameters needs to be carefully considered. To analyze the change of cutting forces, this paper respectively proposes linear and nonlinear cutting force models applied for the helical milling process, then according to the helical milling experiments, cutting coefficients are identified using an inverse method through instantaneous force in the linear model, at the same time, the coefficients are identified by similar average force method in the nonlinear model, simulated three-direction cutting forces under two different situations are compared to the experimental results. The relationship between cutting force coefficients and cutting parameters is analyzed in detail, the linear and nonlinear models as well as the fitting relations of different cutting force coefficients are compared. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of cutting parameters on the cutting coefficients, thus create a model to predict reliably the cutting force with different cutting parameters.
