The increasing relevance of air transport as a contributor to climate change requires the development of emissions reduction technologies in a socio-economic and cultural context, where demand and air traffic have traditionally held sustained growth rates. However, the irruption of COVID-19 in 2020 has had an enormous negative impact on air travel demand and traffic volumes. Coincidentally, during 2020, new technology proposals for emissions reduction based on use of hydrogen and synthetic fuels have emerged from the aviation stake holders. By following a novel approach connecting the analysis of expectations of technology developments and their deployment into the fleet to market constraints, this study discusses how, even considering the new technology proposals and even if the COVID-19 has led to a completely different scenario in tourism and aviation, the air transport energy paradigm will remain unchanged in the upcoming decades as a consequence of market constraints, aircraft complexity, compliance with safety requirements, and extended life cycles. In this frame, aviation needs to keep on pursuing the abatement of its emissions while managing social expectations in a realistic manner and leaning on compensation schemes to achieve emissions contention while new technologies become serviceable in the longer term.

Overview: Researchers and practitioners have shown great interest in crowdsourcing for problem solving. Although scholars have developed several conceptual frameworks that outline the fundamentals of crowdsourcing, few studies provide a detailed process to successfully implement it. Our results from a multiple case study comprising four major Spanish organizations that have implemented ideation contests—Madrid City Hall, Sabadell Bank, Endesa, and Repsol Group—show how internal ideation contests can foster a culture of innovation in which employees can feel accomplished and receive recognition by presenting new ideas and innovative possibilities. We present a seven-step process that describes the key analytical and decision-making components required to lead the design and rollout of internal ideation contests for which the goals are to align strategic challenges with the innovation process.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze how firms can enhance their innovative capabilities and become more resilient. The current business environment requires a specific type of management for companies to remain competitive and innovation plays a key role in this respect. However, this means that a particular kind of corporate culture must promote innovation in the firm. This innovation culture is likely to be present in innovative companies that have survived in the long term (at least 50 years) and be the source of an adaptive advantage.Design/methodology/approachUsing innovative Spanish firms, which were established at least 50 years ago, an exploratory factorial analysis was conducted to verify the existence of an innovation culture. Thereafter, a cluster analysis was undertaken to study differences in performance to be able to detect and identify their adaptive advantage.FindingsThe findings offer a detailed profile of old and innovative firms created in Spain. Results show that most of the studied firms (88 per cent) have an innovation culture. Furthermore, two separate groups were identified, in which one showed higher profitability and a lower adjustment to an innovation culture, while the other showed the reverse results. This suggests that innovation culture helps companies be more resilient but does not necessarily lead to higher returns.Practical implicationsCorporate culture is identified as a useful management tool in the search for more resilient enterprises. Specific cultural traits are recommended and a benchmarking tool is applied and made available upon request.Originality/valueAlthough there are a number of studies which consider the concept of adaptive advantage and resilience on the one side, and on corporate innovation culture on the other, this paper seems to be the first to empirically explore the relationship of both these concepts.

The present empirical study aimed to analyse the ways in which Spanish hotel establishments learn and whether their hotel managers could improve their organisational performance with the implementation of a suitable learning process in a situation of economic crisis. After reviewing the literature, a structural equation model was developed based on a survey of 147 hotel establishments in the region of Madrid in order to contrast the proposed hypothesis. The results revealed that hotel establishments' managers can improve their performance through organisational learning, drawing information from both external and internal drivers thanks to the existence of cultural and technological enablers. The conclusions of the study contribute to the scientific understanding of the subject researched and at the same time may encourage hotel managers to regard organisational learning processes as a key element for improving performance.

The present four-year study analysed university students’ acquisition of the cross-curricular skills needed in the tourist industry. The aims were to determine whether tourism students at a Spanish university feel that their university experience enhances cross-curricular skills, which the tourism industry values as important, and whether there are differences in this respect between men and women. The findings showed that the acquisition by the students of the cross-curricular skills that the industry values as important is uneven, and that most of them are not adequately acquired; and that there are no significant differences in this respect between men and woman.

Taking a proposal from an intellectual capital general model for the hospitality sector composed of five capitals: human, organisational, technological, business relation and contextual, the present working paper attempts to reach a definition of a Synthetic Model by enabling the measurement and development of the existing intangibles in the Spanish hotel sector, specifically, in Madrid. Taking this General Model as starting point and with the cooperation of the expert opinion of the managers of four and five stars hotels in Madrid, we will obtain this much more operational and agile Synthetic Model.
