This paper proposes a customized convolutional neural network for crack detection in concrete structures. The proposed method is compared to four existing deep learning methods based on training data size, data heterogeneity, network complexity, and the number of epochs. The performance of the proposed convolutional neural network (CNN) model is evaluated and compared to pretrained networks, i.e., the VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-50, and Inception V3 models, on eight datasets of different sizes, created from two public datasets. For each model, the evaluation considered computational time, crack localization results, and classification measures, e.g., accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Experimental results demonstrated that training data size and heterogeneity among data samples significantly affect model performance. All models demonstrated promising performance on a limited number of diverse training data; however, increasing the training data size and reducing diversity reduced generalization performance, and led to overfitting. The proposed customized CNN and VGG-16 models outperformed the other methods in terms of classification, localization, and computational time on a small amount of data, and the results indicate that these two models demonstrate superior crack detection and localization for concrete structures.

Effective classroom instruction requires monitoring student participation and interaction during class, identifying cues to simulate their attention. The ability of teachers to analyze and evaluate students’ classroom behavior is becoming a crucial criterion for quality teaching. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based behavior recognition techniques can help evaluate students’ attention and engagement during classroom sessions. With rapid digitalization, the global education system is adapting and exploring emerging technological innovations, such as AI, the Internet of Things, and big data analytics, to improve education systems. In educational institutions, modern classroom systems are supplemented with the latest technologies to make them more interactive, student centered, and customized. However, it is difficult for instructors to assess students’ interest and attention levels even with these technologies. This study harnesses modern technology to introduce an intelligent real-time vision-based classroom to monitor students’ emotions, attendance, and attention levels even when they have face masks on. We used a machine learning approach to train students’ behavior recognition models, including identifying facial expressions, to identify students’ attention/non-attention in a classroom. The attention/no-attention dataset is collected based on nine categories. The dataset is given the YOLOv5 pre-trained weights for training. For validation, the performance of various versions of the YOLOv5 model (v5m, v5n, v5l, v5s, and v5x) are compared based on different evaluation measures (precision, recall, mAP, and F1 score). Our results show that all models show promising performance with 76% average accuracy. Applying the developed model can enable instructors to visualize students’ behavior and emotional states at different levels, allowing them to appropriately manage teaching sessions by considering student-centered learning scenarios. Overall, the proposed model will enhance instructors’ performance and students at an academic level.

Chest radiography is a significant diagnostic tool used to detect diseases afflicting the chest. The automatic detection techniques associated with computer vision are being adopted in medical imaging research. Over the last decade, several remarkable advancements have been made in the field of medical diagnostics with the application of deep learning techniques. Various automated systems have been proposed for the rapid detection of pneumonia from chest X-rays. Although several algorithms are currently available for pneumonia detection, a detailed review summarizing the literature and offering guidelines for medical practitioners is lacking. This study will help practitioners to select the most effective and efficient methods from a real-time perspective, review the available datasets, and understand the results obtained in this domain. It will also present an overview of the literature on intelligent pneumonia identification from chest X-rays. The usability, goodness factors, and computational complexities of the algorithms employed for intelligent pneumonia identification are analyzed. Additionally, this study discusses the quality, usability, and size of the available chest X-ray datasets and techniques for coping with unbalanced datasets. A detailed comparison of the available studies reveals that the majority of the applied datasets are highly unbalanced and limited, providing unreliable results and rendering methods that are unsuitable for large-scale use. Large-scale balanced datasets can be obtained via smart techniques, such as generative adversarial networks. Current literature has indicated that deep learning-based algorithms achieve the best results for pneumonia classification with an accuracy of 98.7%, a sensitivity of 0.99, and a specificity of 0.98. The higher accuracy offered by deep-learning algorithms in addition to their appropriate class balancing techniques serves as a good reference for further research.

Wearing a safety helmet is important in construction and manufacturing industrial activities to avoid unpleasant situations. This safety compliance can be ensured by developing an automatic helmet detection system using various computer vision and deep learning approaches. Developing a deep-learning-based helmet detection model usually requires an enormous amount of training data. However, there are very few public safety helmet datasets available in the literature, in which most of them are not entirely labeled, and the labeled one contains fewer classes. This paper presents the Safety HELmet dataset with 5K images (SHEL5K) dataset, an enhanced version of the SHD dataset. The proposed dataset consists of six completely labeled classes (helmet, head, head with helmet, person with helmet, person without helmet, and face). The proposed dataset was tested on multiple state-of-the-art object detection models, i.e., YOLOv3 (YOLOv3, YOLOv3-tiny, and YOLOv3-SPP), YOLOv4 (YOLOv4 and YOLOv4pacsp-x-mish), YOLOv5-P5 (YOLOv5s, YOLOv5m, and YOLOv5x), the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster-RCNN) with the Inception V2 architecture, and YOLOR. The experimental results from the various models on the proposed dataset were compared and showed improvement in the mean Average Precision (mAP). The SHEL5K dataset had an advantage over other safety helmet datasets as it contains fewer images with better labels and more classes, making helmet detection more accurate.

The use of deep learning (DL) in civil inspection, especially in crack detection, has increased over the past years to ensure long-term structural safety and integrity. To achieve a better understanding of the research work on crack detection using DL approaches, this paper aims to provide a bibliometric analysis and review of the current literature on DL-based crack detection published between 2010 and 2022. The search from Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus, two widely accepted bibliographic databases, resulted in 165 articles published in top journals and conferences, showing the rapid increase in publications in this area since 2018. The evolution and state-of-the-art approaches to crack detection using deep learning are reviewed and analyzed based on datasets, network architecture, domain, and performance of each study. Overall, this review article stands as a reference for researchers working in the field of crack detection using deep learning techniques to achieve optimal precision and computational efficiency performance in light of electing the most effective combination of dataset characteristics and network architecture for each domain. Finally, the challenges, gaps, and future directions are provided to researchers to explore various solutions pertaining to (a) automatic recognition of crack type and severity, (b) dataset availability and suitability, (c) efficient data preprocessing techniques, (d) automatic labeling approaches for crack detection, (e) parameter tuning and optimization, (f) using 3D images and data fusion, (g) real-time crack detection, and (h) increasing segmentation accuracy at the pixel level.

The advent of ChatGPT has sparked a heated debate surrounding natural language processing technology and AI-powered chatbots, leading to extensive research and applications across various disciplines. This pilot study aims to investigate the impact of ChatGPT on users' experiences by administering two distinct questionnaires, one generated by humans and the other by ChatGPT, along with an Emotion Detecting Model. A total of 14 participants (7 female and 7 male) aged between 18 and 35 years were recruited, resulting in the collection of 8672 ChatGPT-associated data points and 8797 human-associated data points. Data analysis was conducted using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results indicate that the utilization of ChatGPT enhances participants' happiness levels and reduces their sadness levels. While no significant gender influences were observed, variations were found about specific emotions. It is important to note that the limited sample size, narrow age range, and potential cultural impacts restrict the generalizability of the findings to a broader population. Future research directions should explore the impact of incorporating additional language models or chatbots on user emotions, particularly among specific age groups such as older individuals and teenagers. As one of the pioneering works evaluating the human perception of ChatGPT text and communication, it is noteworthy that ChatGPT received positive evaluations and demonstrated effectiveness in generating extensive questionnaires.
