Pedestrian Navigation Applications (PNAs) provide assistance in terms of self-localization, space recognition, and turn-by-turn navigation. The use, motivations and perceptions associated with these applications have been under investigated due to users being insufficiently involved in their design and development. This paper analyses the extent to which PNAs are used for assisting people to walk, the frequencies and reasons of using these applications, the perceptions about them, and the barriers preventing them from being used. The study is supported by a questionnaire (N = 1438) that was administered in Bologna (Italy) and Porto (Portugal). Results indicated that 42% of the respondents use PNAs mainly on an occasional basis to find locations and the shortest routes. Google Maps was the preferred navigation service. Statistical tests showed that PNAs were more likely to be used by younger adults and students. The lack of need was the main reason for not using these apps, due to the good spatial knowledge of the cities or the non-use of the pedestrian mode for regular trips. Respondents would like to have apps that are more accurate, usable, and adjusted to pedestrian navigation. The findings described in this paper could be helpful for future designs of PNAs, especially to match pedestrian needs more effectively and to enhance the role of these apps in promoting healthier and sustainable lifestyles.

Walking is a sustainable mode of transport and a healthy way of doing physical activity. Walkability is a concept that has gained enormous popularity in recent years due to its potential to promote more sustainable urban environments and healthy lifestyles. This paper provides a literature review to analyze the influence of built environment attributes on walkability. The Scopus and Web of Science databases were chosen to survey the peer-reviewed documents published up to June 2020. A total of 132 documents were selected by the search. The review of these 132 documents showed that various built environment attributes were differently analyzed and assessed. More specifically, the search identified 32 built environment attributes that were assessed by using 63 measures. Intersection density, residential density and land use mix were the most used attributes for assessing walkability, namely by using objective methods, such as ratios and spatial score tools. In turn, attributes related to streetscape design and security were much less adopted in walkability assessments. This paper provides additional insights into how built environment attributes influence walkability and identifies gaps and issues that should be analyzed in-depth in the future. The review could be helpful for researchers and urban planners in developing walkability studies and in defining policies to improve walkability.

Walking is a mode of transport that offers many environmental and health benefits. Utilitarian walking refers to walking trips undertaken to fulfil routine purposes. The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which walking is used as a transport mode for short urban trips in the city centers of Bologna and Porto and the barriers preventing utilitarian walking. Based on a questionnaire (n = 1117) administered in the two cities, results indicated that 21% of the individuals travel by foot, while 47% combine walking with other modes. This means that 68% of the daily trips to these city centers involve walking activity. From the overall trips, 84% were made to reach work and school/university. Statistical tests showed that utilitarian walkers were more likely to be females (p < 0.001) and undergraduates (p < 0.001). People from Bologna were more likely to engage in utilitarian walking than people from Porto (p < 0.001). Travel distance and time were the main barriers preventing people from engaging in utilitarian walking. The findings described in this paper provide a better understanding of utilitarian walking in the central areas of both cities, which can guide policies to promote healthier lifestyles and sustainable mobility.

Managing household electricity consumption plays an important role in the overall energy management spectrum. This paper presents an analysis of the main factors that contribute to household electricity consumption. Emphasis is given on consumer behaviour in relation to household characteristics. For this purpose, primary data is collected via a survey study from a representative sample of households. The data were analysed using correlational as well as regression analysis methods. It was found that electricity consumption is a social phenomenon, with economic and technological dimensions. Further, it was verified that energy-saving techniques such as insulation, modern building materials and renewable energy make a significant difference in the electricity cost. Moreover, specific types of electrical appliances are highly correlated with electricity consumption.

This paper presents an assessment of the hotel industry of Cyprus, regarding energy management strategies. Also, based on a literature review on the implementation of energy management systems worldwide, specific solutions for the Cyprus hotel industry have been derived. These produced a number of ideas in pursuance of effective management of energy and thereby reduction of electricity cost, CO2 gas emissions and finally be environmentally friendly. Some of these ideas/measures are based on the use of renewable energy, which includes solar-thermal systems for hot water production and HVAC, ground-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaics, and biomass. Further, measures related to energy savings are derived, which include smart keycards, thermal insulation, and an integration of heat and power (CHP) with absorption chillers. The above measures could provide hotels with the opportunity to gain a green building energy certification, which would be useful for both reducing costs as well as attracting guests.

The solar energy alternative could provide us with all the energy we need as it exist in vast quantities all around us. We only should be innovative enough in order to improve the efficiency of our systems in capturing and converting solar energy in usable forms of power. By making a case for the solar energy alternative, we identify areas where efficiency can be improved and thereby Solar Energy can become a competitive energy source. This paper suggests an innovative approach to solar energy power production, which is manifested in a prototype given the name HelioTrope. The Heliotrope Solar Energy Production prototype is tested on its' capabilities to efficiently covert solar energy to generation of electricity and other forms of energy for storage or direct use. HelioTrope involves an innovative Stirling engine design and a parabolic concentrating dish with a sun tracking system implementing a control algorithm to maximize the capturing of solar energy. Further, it utilizes a patent developed by the authors where a mechanism is designed for the transmission of reciprocating motion of variable amplitude into unidirectional circular motion. This is employed in our prototype for converting linear reciprocating motion into circular for electricity production, which gives a significant increase in efficiency and reduces maintenance costs. Preliminary calculations indicate that the Heliotrope approach constitutes a competitive solution to solar power production.

This paper proposes an approach to planing for Bus Rapid Transit Systems via traffic simulation modelling. The approach concentrates on developing a valid traffic network model and consequently evaluating a number of BRT scenarios which include the use of dedicated bus lanes and actuated signal control. This is successfully applied for the case of introducing BRT systems in Nicosia, Cyprus. Key to the success of proposed approach is scenario planning which is achieved by carrying out a series of computer experiments. The results presented in this paper will be useful as a knowledge base in future studies for transportation planning managers and researchers in order to develop effective strategies to enhance the Bus Transport Mode.

In the face of the high complexity and uncertainty in the political market landscape, developing effective strategies becomes the greatest challenge for political organization managers. Traditional tools for strategy analysis become obsolete in front of the dynamic complexity that governs political organizations and their environments. Drawing knowledge from a literature review on political marketing strategies and models, this paper employs systems thinking and system dynamics principles in order to develop a political marketing modeling framework, whereby the systemic effects of various strategies and policies may be analyzed dynamically. The developed framework gives the opportunity to the researcher or political practitioner to model and simulate the feedback structure of the political marketing problem situation. The framework model draws the interrelationships of the political offer, the adoption rates, and the political market growth and the main influences, such as the sources of attractiveness for the new political product, the competition levels, as well as the cultural context and decision making processes of the actors in the system. The work presented in this paper could provide a common communication platform for political party managers, consultants, practitioners, and researchers in order to analyze the political marketing process in a holistic way.

One of the most important issues in road safety management is the lack of reliable methods for predicting the likelihood of accidents. Road safety assessment systems have been developed; however, these systems only employ historical or retrospective analyses, and the human factor element is weak or missing. Effective safety management requires both holistic and prospective viewpoints, with human factors having an intrinsic role. The main goal of this paper is to contribute toward that need through the application of Bayesian belief networks and road traffic simulation for validating the safety requirements of prospective road designs. The theoretical platform of the method is the concepts of human performance and mental workload and how these affect accident likelihood. This paper presents a novel method and a tool that integrates these two mature technologies, for assessing the safety performance of road designs before they are developed. A case study is included that illustrates the application of the method and tool.
