In this study, a microwave-based multisatellite merged product released from the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) and two model-based simulations from the Community Land Model 4.5 (CLM4.5) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used to investigate interannual variations and trends of soil moisture in China between 1979 and 2010. They were also evaluated using in situ observations from the nationwide agrometeorological network. These three datasets show consistent drying trends for surface soil moisture in northeastern and central China, as well the eastern portion of Inner Mongolia, and wetting trends in the Tibetan Plateau, which are also identified by in situ observations. Trends in the root-zone soil moisture are in line with those of surface soil moisture seen in the CLM4.5 and GLDAS simulations obtained from most areas in China (78%–88%), except for northwestern China and southwest of the Tibetan Plateau. Moreover, the drying trend intensifies with increasing soil depth. Taking the in situ measurements as reference, it is found that ESA CCI has better accuracy in identifying the significant drying trends while CLM4.5 and GLDAS capture wetting trends better. Compared to temperature, precipitation is the primary factor responsible for these trends, which controls the direction of soil moisture changes, while increasing temperatures can also enhance soil drying during periods of decreased precipitation.

The potential of satellite precipitation products (SPPs) in monitoring and mitigating hydrometeorological disasters caused by extreme rainfall events has been extensively demonstrated. However, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment regarding the performance of SPPs over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of five SPPs, including CMORPH, IMERG-Final, PERSIANN-CDR, TRMM-3B42V7, and TRMM-3B42RT, in identifying variations in the occurrence and distribution of intense precipitation occurrences across the QTP during the period from 2001 to 2015. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SPPs, a reference dataset was generated by utilizing rainfall measurements collected from 104 rainfall stations distributed across the QTP. Ten standard extreme precipitation indices (SEPIs) were the main focus of the evaluation, which encompassed parameters such as precipitation duration, amount, frequency, and intensity. The findings revealed the following: (1) Geographically, the SPPs exhibited better retrieval capability in the eastern and southern areas over the QTP, while displaying lower detection accuracy in high-altitude and arid areas. Among the five SPPs, IMERG-Final outperformed the others, demonstrating the smallest inversion error and the highest correlation. (2) In terms of capturing annual and seasonal time series, IMERG-Final performs better than other products, followed by TRMM-3B42V7. All products performed better during summer and autumn compared to spring and winter. (3) The statistical analysis revealed that IMERG-Final demonstrates exceptional performance, especially concerning indices related to precipitation amount and precipitation intensity. Moreover, it demonstrates a slight advantage in detecting the daily rainfall occurrences and occurrences of intense precipitation. On the whole, IMERG-Final’s ability to accurately detect extreme precipitation events on annual, seasonal, and daily scales is superior to other products for the QTP. It was also noted that all products overestimate precipitation events to some extent, with TRMM-3B42RT being the most overestimated.

Twenty years of in situ soil moisture data from more than 300 stations located in China are used to perform an evaluation of two surface soil moisture datasets: a microwave-based multi-satellite product (ECV-SM) and the land surface model simulation from the Community Land Model 4.5 (CLM4.5). Both soil moisture products generally show a good agreement with in situ observations. The ECV-SM product has a low bias, with a root mean square difference (RMSD) of 0.075 m3 m-3, but shows a weak correlation with in situ observations (R = 0.41). In contrast, the CLM4.5 simulation, forced by an observation-based atmospheric forcing data, produces better temporal variation of surface soil moisture (R = 0.52), but shows a clear overestimation (bias = 0.05 m3 m-3) and larger RMSD (0.09 m3 m-3), especially in eastern China, caused by inaccurate descriptions of soil characteristics. The ECV-SM product is more likely to be superior in semi-arid regions, mainly because of the accurate retrievals and high observation density, but inferior over areas covered by dense vegetation. Furthermore, it shows a stable to slightly increasing performance in China, except for a decrease during the 2007–2010 blending period. Results from this study can provide comprehensive insight into the performances of the two soil moisture datasets in China, which will be useful for their improvements in merging algorithms or model simulations and for applications in soil moisture data assimilation.

Fire plays a prominent role in the construction and destruction of ecosystems, and the accurate estimation of the burned area (BA) after a fire occurrence is of great significance to protect ecosystems and save people’s lives and property. This study evaluated the performances of three publicly available BA satellite products (GFED4, MCD64CMQ, and FireCCI5.1) in detecting Chinese forest fire burning from 2001 to 2016 across different time scales (yearly, monthly, and seasonally) and spatial scales (regional and provincial). The reference data were derived from the monthly China Forestry Statistical Yearbook (CFSY), and they were mainly used to evaluate the detection ability of each of the three BA products in the three major forest fire areas of China consisting of the Northeast (NE), Southwest (SW), and Southeast (SE) regions. The main results are as follows: (1) A significant declining BA trend was demonstrated in the whole study area and in the NE and SE subregions. Specifically, the slopes for the whole area ranged from −3821.1 ha/year for MCD64CMQ to −33,218 ha/year for the CFSY, the slopes for the NE region ranged from −3821.1 ha/year for MCD64CMQ to −33,218 ha/year for the CFSY, and the slopes for the SE region ranged from −594.24 ha/year for GFED4 to −3162.1 ha/year for the CFSY. The BA in China was mainly dominated by forest fires in the NE region, especially in 2003 and 2006 when this region accounted for 90% and 87% of occurrences, respectively. (2) Compared with the CFSY, GFED4 had the best performance at the yearly scale with an RMSE of 23.9 × 104 ha/year and CC of 0.83. Similarly, at the monthly scale, GFED4 also had the best performance for the three regions, with the lowest RMSE ranging from 0.33 × 104 to 5.4 × 104 ha/month—far lower than that of FireCC5.1 which ranged from 1.16 × 104 to 8.56 × 104 ha/month (except for the SE region where it was slightly worse than MCD64CMQ). At the seasonal scale, GFFD4 had the best performance in spring and winter. It was also noted that the fewer BAs in summer made the differences among the products insignificant. (3) Spatially, GFED4 had the best performance in RMSEs for all the provinces of the three regions, in CCs for the provinces of the SW and SE regions, and in MEs for the provinces of the SE region. (4) All three products had stronger detection abilities for severe and disaster fires than for common fires. Additionally, GFED4 had a more consistent number of months with the CFSY than the other products in the NE region. Moreover, the conclusion that GFED4 had the best performance in the China region was also proved using other validated BA datasets. These results will help us to understand the BA detection abilities of the satellite products in China and promote the further development of multi-source satellite fire data fusion.

In order to compare the impacts of the choice of land surface model (LSM) parameterization schemes, meteorological forcing, and land surface parameters on land surface hydrological simulations, and explore to what extent the quality can be improved, a series of experiments with different LSMs, forcing datasets, and parameter datasets concerning soil texture and land cover were conducted. Six simulations are run for mainland China on 0.1o×0.1o grids from 1979 to 2008, and the simulated monthly soil moisture (SM), evapotranspiration (ET), and snow depth (SD) are then compared and assessed against observations. The results show that the meteorological forcing is the most important factor governing output. Beyond that, SM seems to be also very sensitive to soil texture information; SD is also very sensitive to snow parameterization scheme in the LSM. The Community Land Model version 4.5 (CLM4.5), driven by newly developed observation-based regional meteorological forcing and land surface parameters (referred to as CMFD_CLM4.5_NEW), significantly improved the simulations in most cases over mainland China and its eight basins. It increased the correlation coefficient values from 0.46 to 0.54 for the SM modeling and from 0.54 to 0.67 for the SD simulations, and it decreased the root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 0.093 to 0.085 for the SM simulation and reduced the normalized RMSE from 1.277 to 0.201 for the SD simulations. This study indicates that the offline LSM simulation using a refined LSM driven by newly developed observation-based regional meteorological forcing and land surface parameters can better model reginal land surface hydrological processes.
