Surrogate modeling uses cheap “surrogates” to represent the response surface of simulation models. It involves several steps, including initial sampling, regression and adaptive sampling. This study evaluates an adaptive surrogate modeling based optimization (ASMO) method on two benchmark problems: the Hartman function and calibration of the SAC-SMA hydrologic model. Our results show that: 1) Gaussian Processes are the best surrogate model construction method. A minimum Interpolation Surface method is the best adaptive sampling method. Low discrepancy Quasi Monte Carlo methods are the most suitable initial sampling designs. Some 15–20 times the dimension of the problem may be the proper initial sample size; 2) The ASMO method is much more efficient than the widely used Shuffled Complex Evolution global optimization method. However, ASMO can provide only approximate optimal solutions, whose precision is limited by surrogate modeling methods and problem-specific features; and 3) The identifiability of model parameters is correlated with parameter sensitivity

The South‐to‐North Water Diversion Middle Route Project (MRP), which started its operation in December 2014, was designed to transfer water from Danjiangkou Reservoir (DR) in Hanjiang River Basin to North China Plain (NCP) to alleviate water shortage and long‐term groundwater depletion in the water‐receiving region. This study investigates the effectiveness of actual MRP operation during 2015–2018 using the observed water budget data collected from DR and the groundwater level data from 559 monitoring wells. Assuming that MRP was in operation during 2005–2014, ensemble water diversion simulations were performed to study the sensitivity of MRP effectiveness to two important factors: the downstream water demand of DR (Dwd) and the ratio (Ir) of water diversion volume (Qd) replacing groundwater pumping in NCP. Even though the observed and simulated mean annual Qd during 2015–2018 (i.e., 4.3 and 7.0 km3/year, respectively) failed to meet the original water delivery target of 9.5 km3/year due to its short operation and the coincidence with a dry cycle, MRP is effective in groundwater recovery as an increasing trend (+0.3 km3/year) in groundwater storage (GWS) was observed in NCP during 2015–2018. MRP's effectiveness is sensitive to Dwd and Ir. Dwd should not exceed 23.0 km3/year to guarantee Qd reaching the original target, and Ir should not be less than 33% to guarantee GWS recovery. Those findings suggest that a reasonable decrease of Dwd and an increase of Ir are the recommended pathway to ensure the effectiveness of MRP in meeting both water delivery and groundwater recovery targets.

A global sensitivity analysis method was used to identify the parameters of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model that exert the most influence on precipitation forecasting. Twenty‐three adjustable parameters were selected from seven physical components of the WRF model. The sensitivity was evaluated based on skill scores calculated over nine 5 day precipitation forecasts during the summer seasons from 2008 to 2010 in the Greater Beijing Area in China. We found that eight parameters are more sensitive than others. Storm type seems to have no impact on the list of sensitive parameters but does influence the degree of sensitivity. We also examined the physical interpretation of parameter sensitivity. This analysis is useful for further optimization of the WRF model parameters to improve precipitation forecasting.

Quantifying a set of suitable physics parameterization schemes for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is essential for obtaining highly accurate typhoon forecasts. In this study, a systematic Tukey-based combinatorial optimization method was proposed to determine the optimal physics schemes of the WRF model for 15 typhoon simulations over the Northwest Pacific Ocean, covering all available schemes of microphysics (MP), cumulus (CU), and planetary boundary layer (PBL) physical processes. Results showed that 284 scheme combination searches were sufficient to find the optimal scheme combinations for simulations of track (km), central sea level pressure (CSLP, hPa), and 10 m maximum surface wind (10-m wind, m s−1), compared with the 700 sets of full combinations (i.e., 10 MP × 7 CU × 10 PBL). The decrease in the typhoon simulation error (i.e., root mean square error between simulation and observations) with this optimal scheme combination was 34%, 33.92%, and 25.67% for the track, CSLP, and 10-m wind, respectively. Overall, the results demonstrated that the optimal scheme combination yields reasonable results, and the Tukey-based optimization method is very effective and efficient in terms of computational resources.

The potential of satellite precipitation products (SPPs) in monitoring and mitigating hydrometeorological disasters caused by extreme rainfall events has been extensively demonstrated. However, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment regarding the performance of SPPs over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of five SPPs, including CMORPH, IMERG-Final, PERSIANN-CDR, TRMM-3B42V7, and TRMM-3B42RT, in identifying variations in the occurrence and distribution of intense precipitation occurrences across the QTP during the period from 2001 to 2015. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SPPs, a reference dataset was generated by utilizing rainfall measurements collected from 104 rainfall stations distributed across the QTP. Ten standard extreme precipitation indices (SEPIs) were the main focus of the evaluation, which encompassed parameters such as precipitation duration, amount, frequency, and intensity. The findings revealed the following: (1) Geographically, the SPPs exhibited better retrieval capability in the eastern and southern areas over the QTP, while displaying lower detection accuracy in high-altitude and arid areas. Among the five SPPs, IMERG-Final outperformed the others, demonstrating the smallest inversion error and the highest correlation. (2) In terms of capturing annual and seasonal time series, IMERG-Final performs better than other products, followed by TRMM-3B42V7. All products performed better during summer and autumn compared to spring and winter. (3) The statistical analysis revealed that IMERG-Final demonstrates exceptional performance, especially concerning indices related to precipitation amount and precipitation intensity. Moreover, it demonstrates a slight advantage in detecting the daily rainfall occurrences and occurrences of intense precipitation. On the whole, IMERG-Final’s ability to accurately detect extreme precipitation events on annual, seasonal, and daily scales is superior to other products for the QTP. It was also noted that all products overestimate precipitation events to some extent, with TRMM-3B42RT being the most overestimated.
