The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a massive disruption in the way traditional higher education institutions deliver their courses. Unlike transitions from face-to-face teaching to blended, online or flipped classroom in the past, changes in emergency remote teaching –a temporary shift of instructional delivery to an alternate remote delivery mode due to crisis circumstances– happen suddenly and in an unplanned way. This study analyzes the move to emergency remote teaching at the School of Telecommunication Engineering (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), and the impact of organizational aspects related to unplanned change, instruction-related variables –class size, synchronous/asynchronous delivery– and use of digital supporting technologies, on students' academic performance. Using quantitative data of academic records across all (N = 43) courses of a bachelor's degree programme in Telecommunication Engineering and qualitative data from a questionnaire delivered to all (N = 43) course coordinators, the research also compares the academic results of students during the COVID-19 pandemic with those of previous years. The results of this case study show an increase in students' academic performance in emergency remote teaching, and support the idea that organizational factors may contribute to successful implementation of emergency remote teaching; the analysis does not find differences across courses with different class sizes or delivery modes. The study further explores possible explanations for the results of the analysis, considering organizational, individual and instruction-related aspects.

The emergence of new sales channels, the irruption of new technologies and changes in personal and professional lifestyles have transformed purchasing behaviors throughout the shopping process. Prior research has addressed the effect of these changes in each channel separately, neglecting the study of such effects in multi-channel environments. This research investigates the relation between channel preference and spillover effect—and more particularly, lock-in effect—in apparel multi-channel retailing, with data collected from a survey of 432 Spanish shoppers. The results of the study facilitate further understanding of spillover effect and help companies improve their omnichannel strategies.

The Internet has changed consumer shopping behaviors and purchasing habits. Consumers use the channels that best suit their needs at any given time to have an enhanced shopping experience, forcing companies to innovate in their channel offerings and the ways they manage these channels. This makes it necessary to detect and predict shoppers’ multi-channel behaviors and channel preferences. Based on the idea of value creation and the different aspects of the value perceived by consumers, this study aims to identify the variables predicting channel preference and multi-channel behaviors in retailing. To build a predictive model, the research identifies five categories related to perceived value (perceived quality, monetary costs, non-monetary costs, hedonic elements, and brand knowledge), adding demographic characteristics and variables related to lock-in effects in multichannel shopping behavior. The theoretical predictive model is then empirically tested by comparing the results of traditional and machine learning techniques and algorithms with data from an online questionnaire answered by a representative sample of Spanish consumers of clothing and apparel products. The study contributes to a better understanding of the variables predicting multi-channel behaviors and channel preference, providing companies with actionable insight into how they should manage their multi-channel offering to increase sales.

The deregulation of the electricity markets in the European Union and the transformation caused by digital technologies and customer-centric strategies have altered the industry ecosystem, forcing companies to adapt to the new scenario. This research study aims to give a global overview of the digital transformation and channel integration of free-market electricity retailers in Spain from a consumer’s perspective. The analysis includes all free-market electricity retailers that operate at the national scale, explores the level of digital transformation and channel integration of these companies based on a structured set of indicators, and measures them using the mystery shopper technique. The results show important differences between leading retailers and the rest of companies, evidence an important lag of the sector when compared to other retail markets and an overall lack of multichannel and omnichannel strategies, show a strong effort of retailers in online billing and self-service customer data management, and reveal shortcomings in the availability of communication channels with customers.

In multi-channel contexts, interactions between retailers and shoppers may occur in two or more channels along the shopping process. Besides making a revision of both service and e-service quality models, this study proposes a unified model for multi-channel contexts across four dimensions: in-store experience, reliability and fulfillment, security and privacy, and customer service. Moreover, it empirically tests this model using a questionnaire administered to a sample of Spanish shoppers (N = 432) of clothing and apparel. The results suggest an alternative factor configuration of four components: store design; delivery options; reliability, fulfillment and product information; and facilitation of touch and feel experiences. The research includes a practical application example of the resulting conceptualization of quality by exploring the relationship between its dimensions and single-channel or multi-channel behaviors. The results also show that store design has a positive relationship with single-channel behaviors and reliability, and that fulfillment-related aspects are associated with multi-channel behavior.

In order to achieve a true transition from the Information Society to the Knowledge Society, Information and Communication Technologies must play a capital role in educational and knowledge management processes. The gap between advances in technology and current teaching methods is slowing up the integration of new educational technologies into already existing technological and methodological frameworks. As a result, the combination of mature educational technologies and educational methods does not meet the demands of today's society. In the pursuit of ways to reconcile consolidated and emerging technologies with educational methods to improve educational processes, the authors propose a technological environment to support learning services: the learning ecosystem. This chapter presents an initial proposal of a learning technological ecosystem based on an architecture framework and interoperable components, and outlines the required elements, actions and methods for learning ecosystems to become a reality.

This study proposes an alternative approach to the study of technology acceptance and refusal behaviors in organizations. Whereas traditional technology acceptance studies focus on structural modeling and the explanation of net effects, this research investigates the different conjunctural causal relations among variables affecting adoption that lead to acceptance or refusal to use corporate blogs in companies for knowledge-sharing purposes. The research includes five conditions—behavioral intention, perceived critical mass, social anxiety, technical support, and managerial support—and uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to observe how these conditions affect four different outcomes: presence and absence of knowledge-creation and knowledge-acquisition behaviors, respectively. The results complement prior studies and provide insight on how corporate blog acceptance and refusal processes operate.

The emergence of learning analytics as a discipline of its own has given way to a diverse subset of research fields offering very different approximations to the topic. One of the most recent and active approaches is social learning analytics, which focuses primarily on the application of social network analysis (SNA) techniques and visualizations to study and help understanding interactions in online courses as a key pillar of social construction of learning. However, and despite this interest, current tools for analysis and visualization are very limited for advanced social learning analytics, and SNA applications cannot directly process data from learning management systems. This paper presents a technical view of the design and implementation of a web services-based application that aims to overcome these limitations by extracting and processing educational data about forum interactions in online courses to generate the corresponding social graphs and enable advanced social network analysis on SNA software.

In the past decades, online learning has transformed the educational landscape with the emergence of new ways to learn. This fact, together with recent changes in educational policy in Europe aiming to facilitate the incorporation of graduate students to the labor market, has provoked a shift on the delivery of instruction and on the role played by teachers and students, stressing the need for development of both basic and cross-curricular competencies. In parallel, the last years have witnessed the emergence of new educational disciplines that can take advantage of the information retrieved by technology-based online education in order to improve instruction, such as learning analytics.\ud \ud This study explores the applicability of learning analytics for prediction of development of two cross-curricular competencies – teamwork and commitment – based on the analysis of Moodle interaction data logs in a Master’s Degree program at Universidad a Distancia de Madrid (UDIMA) where the students were education professionals. The results from the study question the suitability of a general interaction-based approach and show no relation between online activity indicators and teamwork and commitment acquisition. The discussion of results includes multiple recommendations for further research on this topic

Collaboration has become an essential process to improve business performance. Firms need to enhance innovation, and this is where 2.0 collaborative tools are expected to play a key role. Corporate weblogs are one of the main 2.0 tools that have raised more interest among managers, due to their ease of use and potential to bring together employees and partners who have to collaborate in order to achieve a common goal. However, individuals’ reactions to the use of such new systems may differ, which in turn might lead to rejection of corporate blogs. Thus, the objective of this exploratory research is to study the influence of individuals’ beliefs in the adoption of corporate weblogs; more specifically, the factors discussed in this research are self-efficacy, personal outcomes expectations and anxiety. In order to assess predictive ability for the exploratory research model, we have developed a theory grounded model, which has been validated with data from 70 employees from the Information Technology department of a large industrial Spain-based company. Findings from the results show that perceived usefulness is predicted by anxiety and personal outcomes expectations, perceived ease of use is predicted by blog anxiety, and behavioral intention to use corporate blogs is predicted by perceived usefulness.

Socially derived characteristics (perceptions of individuals about technology-related characteristics) of Web 2.0 tools are not generally taken into account when decisions are made about which systems to use for collaboration in corporate settings. This exploratory research studies the influence of these characteristics—perceived compatibility, social presence, and group supportability—in the adoption of corporate blogs and validates a theory-grounded model with data from 73 employees. The results show that social presence and users’ values influence perceived usefulness of corporate blogs and play an important role in their adoption, while existing work practices, prior experience and group supportability do not.

Although literature about problem based learning (PBL) is not scarce, there is little research on experiences about learning methodologies that combine PBL and the use of simulation tools. This lack of studies is even more notable in the case of engineering courses. The motivation for this study is to show how such a combination of PBL and simulation has been designed in a group work course for engineers and to analyze how the underlying factors of this methodology are related to perceived learning. This exploratory study focuses on how perceived enjoyment, interaction, collaborative learning, perceived satisfaction, and time dedicated to the course affect the learning perceived by the students in an engineer's degree course. The outcomes of this pilot study show that only three of these factors (satisfaction, time dedication, and collaborative learning) affect the students' perceived learning. Despite the high ratings obtained for interaction and perceived enjoyment, no significant relation between these factors and perceived learning was found. The reasons behind these findings are discussed.
