The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in various spheres of human activity is a promising direction for countries with very different types of economies. This statement refers to resource-rich economies as well. The peculiarities of such countries are associated with the dependence on resource prices since their economies present low diversification. Therefore, the employment of new technologies is one of the ways of increasing the sustainability of such economy development. In this context, the use of UAVs is a prospect direction, since they are relatively cheap, reliable, and their use does not require a high-tech background. The most common use of UAVs is associated with various types of monitoring tasks. In addition, UAVs can be used for organizing communication, search, cargo delivery, field processing, etc. Using additional elements of artificial intelligence (AI) together with UAVs helps to solve the problems in automatic or semi-automatic mode. Such UAV is named intelligent unmanned aerial vehicle technology (IUAVT), and its employment allows increasing the UAV-based technology efficiency. However, in order to adapt IUAVT in the sectors of economy, it is necessary to overcome a range of limitations. The research is devoted to the analysis of opportunities and obstacles to the adaptation of IUAVT in the economy. The possible economic effect is estimated for Kazakhstan as one of the resource-rich countries. The review consists of three main parts. The first part describes the IUAVT application areas and the tasks it can solve. The following areas of application are considered: precision agriculture, the hazardous geophysical processes monitoring, environmental pollution monitoring, exploration of minerals, wild animals monitoring, technical and engineering structures monitoring, and traffic monitoring. The economic potential is estimated by the areas of application of IUAVT in Kazakhstan. The second part contains the review of the technical, legal, and software-algorithmic limitations of IUAVT and modern approaches aimed at overcoming these limitations. The third part—discussion—comprises the consideration of the impact of these limitations and unsolved tasks of the IUAVT employment in the areas of activity under consideration, and assessment of the overall economic effect.

This study, carried out in tailings from two sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposits in the Lublin-Głogów Copper District in Poland (Kupferschiefer-type deposit) and Zhezkazgan (cupriferous sandstone-type deposit) in Kazakhstan, analysed the mineralogy of copper, zinc, and lead minerals as related to metal accumulation in sediments. Microscopic study in reflected light and SEM–EDS (Scanning Electron Microscope—Energy Dispersive Spectrometer) analysis, as well as chemical diversity in the used INAA (Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis), ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma), and AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) methods in 35 samples from Kazakhstan and 35 from Poland were examined due to their diversity. In both tailing deposits in Kazakhstan and Poland, heavy fractions were dominated by copper sulphides: chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4). and chalcocite (Cu2S). Moreover, sphalerite, galena, and cerussite have been recognized as a carriers of Zn and Pb. Their geochemistry was dominated by Cu, showing a mean content of 2500 ppm, in both Poland and Kazakhstan. Zinc and lead also occurred, showing a content of approximately 200 ppm and 500 ppm in Poland, and 1500 ppm Zn and 2500 ppm Pb in Kazakhstan, respectively. Grain size analysis indicated that the dominant grain size in both districts corresponded to the silt and fine sands fractions. Copper, zinc and lead sulphides accumulated in fine fractions in tailings from Kazakhstan (in sandstones and quartz grains), and mainly in coarse fractions in Poland (within carbonates, sandstones, and black shales). Mineralogical and geochemical features should be taken into consideration when assessing potential metal sources of technogenic materials.

Mineral resources, particularly copper, are crucial for the sustained economic growth of developing countries like Kazakhstan. Over the past four decades, the diversity and importance of critical minerals for high technology and environmental applications have increased dramatically. Today, copper is a critical metal due to its importance in electrification. Porphyry deposits are important sources of copper and other critical metals. Conventional exploration methods for mapping alteration zones as indicators of high-potential zones in porphyry deposits are often associated with increased cost, time and environmental concerns. Remote sensing imagery is a cutting-edge technology for the exploration of minerals at low cost and in short timeframes and without environmental damage. Kazakhstan hosts several large porphyry copper deposits, such as Aktogay, Aidarly, Bozshakol and Koksai, and has great potential for the discovery of new resources. However, the potential of these porphyry deposits has not yet been fully discovered using remote sensing technology. In this study, a remote sensing-based mineral exploration approach was developed to delineate hydrothermal alteration zones associated with Aktogay porphyry copper mineralization in eastern Kazakhstan using Landsat-8 and ASTER satellite sensors. A comprehensive suite of image processing techniques was used to analyze the two remote sensing datasets, including specialized band ratios (BRs), principal component analysis (PCA) and the Crosta method. The remote sensing results were validated against field data, including the spatial distribution of geological lineaments and petrographic analysis of the collected rock samples of alteration zones and ore mineralization. The results show that the ASTER data, especially when analyzed with specialized BRs and the Crosta method, effectively identified the main hydrothermal alteration zones, including potassic, propylitic, argillic and iron oxide zones, as indicators of potential zones of ore mineralization. The spatial orientation of these alteration zones with high lineament density supports their association with underlying mineralized zones and the spatial location of high-potential zones. This study highlights the high applicability of the remote sensing-based mineral exploration approach compared to traditional techniques and provides a rapid, cost-effective tool for early-stage exploration of porphyry copper systems in Kazakhstan. The results provide a solid framework for future detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical studies aimed at resource development of the Aktogay porphyry copper mineralization in eastern Kazakhstan. The results of this study underpin the effectiveness of remote sensing data for mineral exploration in geologically complex regions where limited geological information is available and provide a scalable approach for other developing countries worldwide.

Mafic–ultramafics complexes are crucial for their tectonic implication, upper mantle condition, and for hosting industrial minerals in a region. This study aims to highlight and characterize the mafic–ultramafic rocks of the Logar Ophiolite Complex using the integration of geospatial technology and field data. The spatial distribution of the ophiolitic complex was examined in this study using the mineralogical indices (MI), band ratio (BR), and spectral angle mapper (SAM) methods within the framework of geospatial technology using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data. Additionally, several samples were collected from the identified complexes for validation, petrographic, and mineralogical analyses. Combining geospatial technology and conventional approaches, e.g., field sampling and geological data analysis yields efficient discrimination of mafic–ultramafic rocks with their associated hydrothermal altered minerals. The serpentinization and carbonate processes are predominantly seen along the eastern side of the active fault zone following the detection of ophiolites. Detailed mapping of the ophiolitic complex and associated rocks was achieved using refined mafic index (MI), band ratio 12/14 and 4/8 for rocks and SAM for highlighting the mafic–ultramafic altered minerals, and petrographic analysis of the collected samples. The field works verified the results of the ASTER data. The findings of this study can significantly contribute to detailed tectonic and geologic studies of the detected ophiolites in terms of their emplacement mechanism and ages.

Purpose. Exploration and predicting the prospective areas in the Zhezkazgan ore region to set up detailed prospecting and evaluation works using new integrated technologies of prediction constructions in the mineral deposits geology. Methods. An integrated methodological approach is used, including methods for deciphering the Earth’s remote sensing (ERS) data, the use of geophysical data and methods of analogy and actualism. All constructions are made in accordance with the principles of shock-explosive tectonics (SET). Prediction constructions are started with the selection of remote sensing data for the studied region and interpretation based on the processing of radar satellite images obtained from the Radarsat-1 satellite. The radar satellite images are processed in the Erdas Imagine software package. Findings. New local prospective areas have been identified, within which it is expected to discover the deposits. Their reserves are to replenish the depleted ore base in the Zhezkazgan region. Area of the gravity maximum 1 (the Near), considered to be the most promising, is located in close proximity to the city of Zhezkazgan; area of the gravity maximum 2 (the Middle); area of the gravity maximum 3 (the Distant-Tabylga); area of the gravity maximum 6 (the Central). A prospective area has been also revealed, overlaid by a loose sediment cover and located inside the Terekty ring structure, as well as the area of a thick stratum of pyritized grey sandstones, which is adjacent to the Sh-2 well drilled to the south of the Zhezkazgan field. Originality. The use of a new prediction technology, in contrast to the known ones, is conditioned by the widespread use of the latest remote information from satellite images, which increases the accuracy of identifying the prospective areas of fields. Practical implications. The new technology for predicting mineral deposits makes it possible to significantly reduce the areas exposed to priority prospecting, which provides significant cost savings.
