Effects of weather modification operations on precipitation in target areas have been widely reported, but little is specifically known about the downwind (extra-area) effects in China. We estimated the extra-area effect of an operational winter (November–February) aircraft cloud-seeding project in northern Jiangxi Province in eastern China by using a revised historical target/control regression analysis method based on the precipitation data in winter. The results showed that the overall seasonal average rainfall at the downwind stations increased by 21.67% (p = 0.0013). This enhancement effect was detected as far as 120 km away from the target area. Physical testing was used to compare the cloud characteristics before and after seeding on 29 November 2014. A posteriori analysis with respect to the characteristics of cloud units derived from operational weather radar data in Jiangxi was performed by tracking cloud units. Radar features in the target unit were enhanced relative to the control unit for more than two hours after the operational cloud seeding, which is indicative of the extra-area seeding effect. The findings could be used to help relieve water shortages in China.

The atmospheric water resources (AWR) in China have evident regional characteristics. In order to scientifically and rationally exploit the AWR in different regions of China, we divided China into seven regions based on the ERA‐5, the CloudSat data, and so on. Such characteristics as water vapour, cloud characteristics, cloud water resources (CWR), precipitation efficiency of hydrometeors (PEh), and the exploitation potential of CWR were studied in this article. Some results in summer are shown. (a) There were relatively more precipitation, richer water vapour, stronger water vapour transport and convergence, more cloud covers, and relatively larger zones of rich total column cloud water content in China. Therefore, it is of important significance to study AWR in summer in China. (b) In respect of single‐layer clouds, low clouds were in the majority over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and the southwest China (SW), medium clouds were predominant over the northern regions, and high clouds existed more over the central region (CR) and the southeast China (SE). The liquid water content (LWC) at each height of cloud was less than 800 mg·m−3 and decreased gradually with the increase in height in China. The convective development heights, the LWC at each altitude, and the frequencies of less LWCs over the northern regions were lower than those over the southern regions. The ice water content (IWC) at each height of cloud was less than 250 mg·m−3, and more than 96% of them were less than 100 mg·m−3. (c) CWR over the northeast China (NE), north China (NC), and CR were relatively rich, but with relatively low PEh, so there was relatively higher exploitation potential of CWR in these regions, followed by the northwest China (NW) and TP, and there was still some exploitation potential of CWR in SE and SW.

Based on 55 years (from 1961 to 2015) of ground‐based hailstorm and atmospheric sounding observations, the climatological characteristics of hailstorms in China, along with potential influencing factors, were analysed. We found that hailstorms exhibit large spatial and temporal variability, with the peak occurring in spring in south China, and in summer in north China. The Tibetan Plateau (TTP) is a region with high hailstorm frequency. Overall, the frequency of hailstorms has decreased over the 55 years, although there was an increase from 1961 to 1985. In terms of diurnal variability, while hailstorm frequency peaks in the afternoon in most of China, it peaks during the night or early morning in southwest China. The magnitude of the peak increased during the 1960s and 1970s, and then decreased afterwards. Hailstorms are negatively correlated with daily mean temperature but are positively correlated with diurnal temperature range, convective available potential energy (CAPE) and totals–totals index. The increase of hailstorms during the period from 1961 to 1985 is mainly correlated with the increase in CAPE over the TTP region, while the decrease of hailstorms afterwards is correlated with all four convective parameters. The finding has significant implications for the potential impact of increasing greenhouse gases on climatological changes in hailstorm.

Understanding the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of atmospheric water resources in each region of China is essential for their exploitation. In this study, we focus on the variation in atmospheric precipitable water (PW), cloud parameters, cloud water resources (CWR), and precipitation efficiency of hydrometeors (PEh) as well as their possible influencing factors in each region of China in summer using ERA5 and MODIS data. The results showed that: (1) In the past 42 years, PW increased significantly in the northwest and Tibetan Plateau regions, and both cloud cover and total column cloud water content decreased significantly in northern China, except for medium-cloud cover which significantly increased in the Tibetan Plateau. (2) In the past 20 years, annual PEh was significantly higher, with clear interdecadal variation in most regions, whereas CWR decreased in northern China, the southwest, central region, and southeast, and increased in northeast and Tibetan Plateau. (3) PEh in each region was greatly influenced by precipitation (correlation coefficient 0.55 < R < 0.82 *, * = p < 0.05), having a significant positive correlation in the northeast with cloud water path, cloud optical thickness, and aerosol optical depth (0.44 * < R < 0.54 *), and a significant negative correlation in the central region with the cloud effective radius (R = −0.54 *).
