In this paper, the issue of the deliberate aging of products by manufacturers is discussed. Deliberate aging consists in intentionally planning or designing a product with an artificially limited lifetime in order to force consumers to replace it faster. The resulting rapid acceleration of the cycle of obtaining and utilizing consumer goods has serious consequences in the form of negative externalities. For this reason, the conscious aging of products is now recognized as the cause of unjustified consumption, generating huge economic and social costs and leading to the devastation of the natural environment and excessive exploitation of natural resources. Thus, it is in clear contradiction to the model of sustainable development. The aim of this paper was to identify the purchasing attitudes of buyers in the durable goods market. For its implementation, a pilot questionnaire study, which covered a representative group of 354 respondents, was carried out. The results indicate that the factors that influence the purchase of restitution goods depend on the type of product and the consumer’s income. At the same time, about two thirds of the respondents recognized the problem of the deliberate aging of products. In their opinion, the goods produced in the autarkic economy were more durable and their life cycle was much longer. The results obtained require further empirical verification carried out in comparative studies.

Food choices are complex and highly variable, even over short periods, as they are influenced by numerous psychological, social, and cultural factors, in addition to biological and economic ones. Consumer choices are increasingly complex because of the growing quantity and variety of available food products, which also affects individuals’ environments. This paper is part of a larger study on health-related food choices, and it discusses how food choices affect the environment. To achieve the research goal, classes of respondents that are homogeneous in their food choices were identified. The authors used an algorithm to build classification trees and found that health status is determined by respondents’ age and food consumption habits. The paper demonstrates that understanding individual nutritional choices is a prerequisite for changing consumption habits and shaping healthy behavior, which is in line with the principle of sustainable development through sustainable consumption. The findings are relevant to public health researchers and practitioners who wish to understand the relationship between nutritional practices and health in line with sustainable development.

Research background: The identification of smart specialisations should be based on information allowing the identification of resources and capital in the regions, which constitute the unique value of the area providing for the development of competitive advantages based on innovations and achievements in the research and development activities. Purpose of the article: The key goal is to present the proposal to use an aggregate (synthetic) measure for the purpose of identifying regional development potentials and next the initial smart specialisations (RSS). This approach is particularly useful at the very initial stage of recognizing the potential in the region, and ? after some modifications ? may offer a useful tool for assembling the de-velopment of industries (services) in the region. The additional goals are: (1) to organize the knowledge regarding statistical approaches and selected methods to be used in the process of identifying initial smart specialisations in regions (RSS); (2) exemplification of the presented methodology for the initial regional smart specialisations (RSS) identification in voivodeships in Poland based on a multivariate approach. Methods: Multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) methods are used in the identification procedure of initial regional smart specialisations (RSS), which allowed for performing the assessment in 4 areas: resources and capital; specialisation; development potential (dynamics); the involvement in research and development and innovative activities. They can also be extended with additional dimensions related to the cooperation of enterprises with social or environmental priorities. Findings & Value added: The conducted procedure allowed identifying NACE rev. 2 divisions useful in determining development potentials in Polish regions and later the initial smart specialisations (RSS). The identified initial RSS for Polish voivodeships can be a starting point for building regional smart specialisations based on values supply chain or other premises. Due to the universal nature of the proposed methodology, it can be widely used at the level of subregions, regions and the EU countries.

Background: The implementation of the EU climate and energy policy, along with changes in the legal environment, has led to a significant increase in energy prices in Poland. Consequently, energy expenditures are now a larger part of household budgets. These rising energy costs and the evolving legal landscape are compelling households to invest in energy-saving solutions and modify their energy consumption habits. This article aims to identify the activities of households in Poland regarding the rationalization of energy expenditures. It formulates the following research hypothesis: households invest in energy-saving appliances to rationalize energy expenditures and/or change their behaviors to reduce energy consumption. Methods: The paper is based on primary research conducted using an online questionnaire survey on a sample of 331 respondents in Poland in March and April 2023. Results: A classification tree algorithm was used to identify the level of investment activities and behavioral changes made by households to reduce energy expenditures. The authors found that low-income households and people who fear further energy price increases are the first of all to change their behaviors for more energy-efficient ones. Medium- and high-income households take investment measures. They replace household appliances with more energy-efficient ones and install heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. These investments are motivated by responsible consumption, environmental protection, cleanliness, and the ease of use of the appliances.

This article addresses a topic of critical importance globally, particularly in the context of the ongoing energy crisis, climate change, and efforts to transition towards sustainable energy systems. A growing environmental awareness among consumers, along with changing regulations on energy efficiency, forces companies to adapt their products and services to meet new market demands. Eco-innovations, such as energy-efficient technologies and environmentally friendly materials, can respond to the increasing demand for products with a lower carbon footprint and reduced energy consumption. Using structural equation modelling, our study aimed to evaluate the significance of selected determinants of enterprise activities aimed at innovations that yield environmental benefits. The analysis focused on the scale of the benefits obtained due to these innovations (e.g., reduced material or water use per unit of output, reduced energy use, reduced CO2 footprint, reduction in pollution, or recycling of waste) and during the consumption or use of goods or services by the end user (e.g., energy savings, facilitated recycling, or extended product life). The empirical data source was a database of anonymised individual data from Statistics Poland. The database comprised 8544 industrial enterprises employing 10 or more people, of which 2714 introduced eco-innovations. To verify the hypothetical relationships between variables, we proposed a structural equation modelling method. The structural model estimates indicated that requirements arising from current and future regulations, pressure from high operational costs and administrative formalities, and reputation and incentives had a positive and statistically significant impact on the scale of benefits obtained due to these eco-innovations. The assessment of the importance of factors determining the introduction of eco-innovations differed slightly between companies of different sizes. For large enterprises, the key determinants were incentives, reputation, and law requirements. For medium-sized enterprises, incentives and reputation were the most influential. For small enterprises, reputation was the primary determinant, followed closely by pressure and incentives at a similar level.
