Recently, electric vehicle (EV) technology has received massive attention worldwide due to its improved performance efficiency and significant contributions to addressing carbon emission problems. In line with that, EVs could play a vital role in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, EVs face some challenges such as battery health degradation, battery management complexities, power electronics integration, and appropriate charging strategies. Therefore, further investigation is essential to select appropriate battery storage and management system, technologies, algorithms, controllers, and optimization schemes. Although numerous studies have been carried out on EV technology, the state-of-the-art technology, progress, limitations, and their impacts on achieving SDGs have not yet been examined. Hence, this review paper comprehensively and critically describes the various technological advancements of EVs, focusing on key aspects such as storage technology, battery management system, power electronics technology, charging strategies, methods, algorithms, and optimizations. Moreover, numerous open issues, challenges, and concerns are discussed to identify the existing research gaps. Furthermore, this paper develops the relationship between EVs benefits and SDGs concerning social, economic, and environmental impacts. The analysis reveals that EVs have a substantial influence on various goals of sustainable development, such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, industry, economic growth, and climate actions. Lastly, this review delivers fruitful and effective suggestions for future enhancement of EV technology that would be beneficial to the EV engineers and industrialists to develop efficient battery storage, charging approaches, converters, controllers, and optimizations toward targeting SDGs.

This study examines the use of Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) to mitigate the power quality problems existed in the grid and the harmonics penetrated by the non-linear loads. The UPQC is supported by the Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in this work. Generally, the PV system supplies the active power to the load. However, if the PV is unable to supply the power then the BESS activates and provides power especially during the longer-term voltage interruption. The standalone PV-UPQC system is less reliable compared to a hybrid PV-BESS system because of its instability and high environment-dependency. Therefore, BESS will improve the voltage support capability continuously in the longer-term, reduce the complexity of the DC-link voltage regulation algorithm, and keep producing clean energy. The phase synchronization operation of the UPQC controller is directed by a self-tuning filter (STF) integrated with the unit vector generator (UVG) technique. Implementation of STF will make sure the UPQC can successfully operate under unbalanced and distorted grid voltage conditions. Thus, the requirement of a phase-locked loop (PLL) is omitted and the STF-UVG is utilized to produce the synchronization phases for the series and shunt active power filter (APF) compensator in UPQC controller. Finally, the proposed STF-UVG method is compared with the conventional synchronous references frame (SRF-PLL) method based UPQC to show the significance of the proposed technique. Several case studies are further considered to validate the study in MATLAB-Simulink software.

This paper introduces a novel configuration of multilevel inverter (MLI) with low number of power electric components. The inverter is a combination of two back to back T-type modules using two cross connected switches. This inverter can operate using DC sources having either same or different voltage ratings. The proposed inverter can also be extended using cascaded connection to obtain higher voltage levels. This MLI and its extensions are suitable for other applications where high voltage is required. The major feature of this MLI, is the formation of negative voltage levels without using any H-bridge circuit. Some other advantages of this MLI are; low total harmonic distortion (THD) and highly efficient output voltage. A low frequency modulation technique known as nearest level control (NLC) is applied to produce the high quality output voltage. The simulation was done using MATLAB/Simulink while the hardware prototype is build using TMS320F28335 digital signal processor. The performance of the proposed MLI is validated by obtaining the accurate simulation and experimental results.
