Recently, electric vehicle (EV) technology has received massive attention worldwide due to its improved performance efficiency and significant contributions to addressing carbon emission problems. In line with that, EVs could play a vital role in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, EVs face some challenges such as battery health degradation, battery management complexities, power electronics integration, and appropriate charging strategies. Therefore, further investigation is essential to select appropriate battery storage and management system, technologies, algorithms, controllers, and optimization schemes. Although numerous studies have been carried out on EV technology, the state-of-the-art technology, progress, limitations, and their impacts on achieving SDGs have not yet been examined. Hence, this review paper comprehensively and critically describes the various technological advancements of EVs, focusing on key aspects such as storage technology, battery management system, power electronics technology, charging strategies, methods, algorithms, and optimizations. Moreover, numerous open issues, challenges, and concerns are discussed to identify the existing research gaps. Furthermore, this paper develops the relationship between EVs benefits and SDGs concerning social, economic, and environmental impacts. The analysis reveals that EVs have a substantial influence on various goals of sustainable development, such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, industry, economic growth, and climate actions. Lastly, this review delivers fruitful and effective suggestions for future enhancement of EV technology that would be beneficial to the EV engineers and industrialists to develop efficient battery storage, charging approaches, converters, controllers, and optimizations toward targeting SDGs.

This paper introduces a novel configuration of multilevel inverter (MLI) with low number of power electric components. The inverter is a combination of two back to back T-type modules using two cross connected switches. This inverter can operate using DC sources having either same or different voltage ratings. The proposed inverter can also be extended using cascaded connection to obtain higher voltage levels. This MLI and its extensions are suitable for other applications where high voltage is required. The major feature of this MLI, is the formation of negative voltage levels without using any H-bridge circuit. Some other advantages of this MLI are; low total harmonic distortion (THD) and highly efficient output voltage. A low frequency modulation technique known as nearest level control (NLC) is applied to produce the high quality output voltage. The simulation was done using MATLAB/Simulink while the hardware prototype is build using TMS320F28335 digital signal processor. The performance of the proposed MLI is validated by obtaining the accurate simulation and experimental results.

This study presents a novel multilevel inverter structure that can operate in both switched capacitor and asymmetric DC source modes. In the first mode, it can produce seven-level output voltage employing two switched capacitors and one single DC supply. The five-level output voltage is produced while operating the second mode. The voltage ratio between the input and output voltage for the capacitor mode is 1:3 (triple voltage gain). During the first mode, the capacitor of the inverter is self -balanced whereas the inverter can produce higher voltage output in the DC source mode. The proposed inverter reduces the total standing voltage in both modes of operations as it can generate the output voltage without requiring any additional H-bridge circuit. The feasibility and predominate features of the proposed inverter have been established by comparing with existing topologies in terms of power components count. Results obtained from this study are validated using simulation employing sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). A hardware prototype has also been developed for further validation.

This article introduces a novel reference current generation technique based on the Savitzky–Golay filter (SGF) for shunt active power filter (SAPF). Although the existing and conventional SAPF can mitigate harmonics under grid disturbances and nonlinear load environments, they have numerous performance deficiencies including computational complexity, average filtration ability, and slow dynamic response. The proposed SAPF based on SGF can generate a harmonic-free fundamental reference current that can eventually improve the overall harmonic profile and performance compared to existing SAPFs. In addition, an SGF-based phase-locked loop (PLL) is introduced to generate reference phases directly from the distorted grid voltages by retaining the fundamental information of the signal. Thus, it does not induce any phase delay or distortions in the output, unlike the conventional PLLs utilized in the SAPFs. Comparative analysis of performance evaluation is carried out with other SAPFs, and the findings represent the principal achievements of this article. This includes a substantial improvement in performance and harmonic profile under transient conditions. The results are further validated through simulation analysis and hardware implementation.
