The subject of consideration in the presented article is the concept of a metropolitan railway system (MR) in the area of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis (GZM Metropolis). The content of the publication is divided into two distinct parts. The first presents the assumptions and proposed solutions of the MR system as one of the elements of integrated metropolitan transport. In the second, in the context of the designed solutions in the scope of structure, function and organization of the MR system, the issues of telematic applications for metropolitan passenger transport were discussed. Possible solutions and proposals regarding access of passengers (mainly metropolitan residents) to the metropolitan rail system using individual and network telematics applications were indicated.

The article presents the essence of the phenomenon of modal shift in the TSL sector. Comparative advantage can occur in various forms, including, among others, related to selected quality attributes of transport processes and services as well as specific parameters of transport networks and equipment elements. In this context, the publication presents the impact of ITS technology on shaping the modal shift phenomenon in the TSL sector. Their impact on direct and indirect character has been identified. The analysis of ITS applications in urban transport confirms the specific relations between innovative telematics solutions and the modal shift phenomenon.

Modern technologies of ITS have a varying impact on the TSL sector activity. Mutual relations in the system modern telematics systems - sector entities transportation, spedition and logistics can be considered taking into account, among others, functioning of TSL entities. Essential for their activities are the key challenges of the present. The article considers the impact of modern telematics systems for business activity of transport, spedition and logistics enterprises in accordance with the principles of sustainable mobility and corporate social responsibility. In content of the article were pointed out the essence of both concepts possible to implement in the TSL, were determined their objectives and benefits they generate for the entities sphere of the sector, including its customers. It also presents a proposal to assess the impact of telematics on TSL sector entities of using a specific set of criteria.

Positive importance of a modernized and sustainable urban transport for the development of cities and agglomerations of the region is a key prerequisite to intensify activities to improve the sustainability of users of transport systems. Shaping contemporary balanced as much as possible urban transport systems in the region, should take advantage of the opportunities created by the solutions of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The considerations contained in the article confirms the importance of telematics as one means of sustainability of urban mobility.

For a few years attempts have been made to introduce electric-powered buses to public transportation system. In order to solve this problem rationally, in dependence of local public transport system conditions, models of technical, organizational, economic and ecological links enabling optimal choice of type of propulsion for particular bus line is developed. Technical solutions to enable fully electric busses should be evaluated whether they reflect the prerequisites and requirements of the participating public transport companies. The paper presents a method for evaluating transport system in accordance with the principles of cost-benefit analysis that allows to answer the questions related to the cost-effectiveness of the use of electric drive buses in urban public transport. The model can be used to analyse and design the services of urban public transport in terms of costs generated by the bus fleet equipped with various types of drive. The article presents procedures used to determine the costs used in the method of evaluation of the proposed solutions. The ultimate goal is to find the best technical solution for local public transport companies depending on their real input data (timetable, vehicle operation plan, etc.), which in most cases may mean minimising economic effects, like investment and operational costs

This paper presents implementation of transportation policy in cities of agglomeration in the field of public transportation. The activities in this area should be regarded as one of the principal tools in public policies of cities included in urban agglomeration, which particular focus on its central municipality or municipalities. The starting point for this type of activities that include e.g. modernizations and investments in the transport system of the city, application of “clear” traction and propagation of solutions that minimize environmental conflicts, elimination of exclusion (also exclusion of the disabled) and optimization of the transportation offer is the evaluation of the level of adjustment of communication lines to identified needs of the inhabitants. With regard to this context, the paper discusses the method of evaluation developed for the purposes of the city of Rybnik, Poland, which is a central municipality of the Rybnik agglomeration and western sub-region of the Silesian Voivodeship.

An approach from the economic science viewpoint is applied to the research on the influence of telematics development on the development of a transportation system. A qualitative instrument of such a research is the study of the creation, utilisation and perception of the value potential of a contemporary transportation system. For the purpose of such a research a transportation system being a subsystem of a socio-economic system may be treated as a set of quantitative and qualitative relationships of their elements, linking these elements into one functional entity. The study of the structures of such a system, i.e. the identification of the existing relationships and the definition of new relationships allows further discussion on possible effects of the implementation of telematic systems which could change–among others–the information availability of the transportation. The transformations of the transportation system resulting from the implementation of the information technologies cause the changes of the system perception by the environment. The current paper covers the topic of modelling of these transformations.
