The rise in prices of traditional energy sources, the high dependence of many countries on their import, and the associated need for security of supply have led to large investments in new capacity of wind power plants. Although wind power generation is a mature technology and levelized cost of electricity low, there is still room for its improvement. A review of available literature has indicated that wind turbine development in the coming decade will be based on upscaling wind turbines and minor design improvements. These include further improvements in rotor blade aerodynamics, active control of the rotor blade rotation system, and aerodynamic brakes that will lead to increased power generation efficiency. Improvements in system maintenance and early diagnosis of transmission and power-related faults and blade surface damage will reduce wind turbine downtime and increase system reliability and availability. The manufacture of wind turbines with larger dimensions presents problems of transportation and assembly, which are being addressed by manufacturing the blades from segments. Numerical analysis is increasingly being used both in wind turbine efficiency analysis and in stress and vibration analysis. Direct drive is becoming more competitive with traditional power transmission through a gearbox. The trend in offshore wind farms is to increase the size of wind turbines and to place them farther from the coast and in deeper water, which requires new forms of floating foundations. Due to the different work requirements and more difficult conditions of the marine environment, optimization methods for the construction of offshore substructures are currently being developed. There are plans to use 66-kV cables for power transmission from offshore wind farms instead of the current 33-kV cables. Offshore wind farms can play an important role in the transition to a hydrogen economy. In this context, significant capacity is planned for the production of “green” hydrogen by electrolysis from water. First-generation wind turbines are nearing the end of their service life, so strategies are being developed to repower them, extend their life or dismantle and recycle them.

We are witnessing significant climatic changes and increasingly frequent extreme weather conditions affecting every part of the globe. In order to reduce and stop these unfavourable climate changes, there has been a shift to the use of renewables, and in this sense, a significant contribution of the photovoltaic (PV) power plant is planned. This paper analyses the safety, reliability, and resilience of PV systems to extreme weather conditions such as wind storms, hail, lightning, high temperatures, fire, and floods. In addition to using available information from the literature, temperature measurements were also carried out on the rooftop PV power plant in Slavonski Brod, as well as a numerical stress analysis at extreme wind speeds using Ansys software. The results of the analysis show that existing PV systems are very resilient to extreme weather conditions. Utility-scale PV systems can usually withstand wind speeds of up to 50 m/s without any problems, and only at higher speeds do local stresses occur in certain parts of the structure that are higher than permissible. Resistance to hail is also very high, and manufacturers guarantee resistance to hail up to 25 mm in size. At high air temperatures, the temperature of the panel frame can reach about 70 °C, the panel temperature up to 85 °C, and the temperature of the cable insulation over 60 °C, as measurements have shown. Such high temperatures lead to a drop in electricity production up to 30% but do not pose a fire hazard to the cables and the roof if the roof insulation is conducted correctly. Forest fires do not usually pose a direct threat to PV systems, but the smoke that spreads over a large area reduces the solar radiation reaching the PV panel. It can also cause an unfavourable “wiggle effect”. Lightning strikes to a PV panel are not common, although they are possible. With built-in safeguards, no major damage should occur. Flooding is always a possibility, but with properly designed drainage systems, the damage is minimal in most cases.

The use of heat pumps is increasing worldwide, and knowledge of their properties is becoming more and more important. Although numerous tests regarding heat pumps have been performed, due to the large number of influencing variables, the entire range of input parameters is not covered, and there is no overall picture regarding the range of the coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pumps and their output parameters. This study extends existing research and provides a much more detailed comparison of results for the application of R1234yf and R1234ze(E) refrigerants, including the pressure drop across the evaporator, condenser, and internal heat exchanger (IHX). The appropriate mathematical model for the selected components was defined and verified experimentally. A total of 60 series of measurements were performed at different evaporating and condensing temperatures. The deviation of the numerical simulation results from the experimentally determined results was up to 7.4% for cooling capacity, 8.1% for heating capacity, 7.2% for COP and 6.8% for compressor energy consumption. This study shows that COP increases from 4.77% to 10.73% for R1234ze(E) compared to R1234yf. The use of an IHX in the thermal cycle further increases COP for both refrigerants between 2.61% and 4.99%.

This study examines the effects of hailstorms on photovoltaic (PV) modules, focussing on damage mechanisms, testing standards, numerical simulations, damage detection techniques, and mitigation strategies. A comprehensive review of the recent literature (2017–2025), experimental results, and case studies is complemented by advanced simulation methods such as finite element analysis (FEA) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The research emphasises the crucial role of protective glass thickness, cell type, number of busbars, and quality of lamination in improving hail resistance. While international standards such as IEC 61215 specify test protocols, actual hail events often exceed these conditions, leading to glass breakage, micro-cracks, and electrical faults. Numerical simulations confirm that thicker glass and optimised module designs significantly reduce damage and power loss. Detection methods, including visual inspection, thermal imaging, electroluminescence, and AI-driven imaging, enable rapid identification of both visible and hidden damage. The study also addresses the financial risks associated with hail damage and emphasises the importance of insurance and preventative measures. Recommendations include the use of certified, robust modules, protective covers, optimised installation angles, and regular inspections to mitigate the effects of hail. Future research should develop lightweight, impact-resistant materials, improve simulation modelling to better reflect real-world hail conditions, and improve AI-based damage detection in conjunction with drone inspections. This integrated approach aims to improve the durability and reliability of PV modules in hail-prone regions and support the sustainable use of solar energy amidst increasing climatic challenges.

The objective of this work was to investigate the fracture behavior of a heterogeneous I-shaped welded joint in the context of yield load solutions. The weld was divided into two equal parts, using the metal with the higher yield strength and the metal with the lower yield strength compared to base metal. For both configurations of the I-shaped weld, one with a crack in strength in the over-matched part of the weld and one for a crack in the under-matched part of the weld, a systematic study of fracture toughness SE(B) specimen was carried out in which the crack length, the width of the weld and the strength mismatch factor for both weld metals were varied, and the yield loads were determined. As a result of the study, two mathematical models for determination of yield loads are proposed. Both models were experimentally tested with one strength mismatch configuration, and the results showed good agreement and sufficiently conservative results compared to the experimental results.
