With multilayer hard roof occurring above the mining area, the strata behaviors will be significantly affected by their special characteristics and interaction. In this paper, relying on the mining background of panel 1061 of a coalmine, the breaking instability of double-layer hard thick strata (DLHTS) and the precursory information of disasters are studied by using theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and physical simulation. Results show that the DLHTS have bearing, blocking, and controlling effects. Prior to DLHTS breaking, the horizontal development of stress concentration zone and plastic zone can be controlled, and the overburden movement is gentle, while during the breaking process, the stress drops abruptly, the plastic zone expands longitudinally rapidly, the overburden moves notably, and the energy release is sharp, which is likely to directly cause strong dynamic pressure. Moreover, the DLHTS can interact with and influence each other; that is to say, the breaking of lower magmatic rock (LMR) can provide sufficient space for that of upper magmatic rock (UMR), while the UMR breaking can promote the LMR periodic breaking in turn and cause its secondary instability, thereby easily causing complex or composite dynamic disasters’ formation. Hence, compared with single hard thick stratum occurrence, the strata behaviors affected by DLHTS breaking and instability are normal and more intense. Study results can provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of dynamic disaster with hard thick stratum occurrence and important guidance value for promoting safe and efficient production of coalmines.

Large deformation control of deep soft rock roadways has been a major problem in mining activities worldwide. This paper considers the supporting problem related to large deformation of a deep soft rock roadway in Chao’hua coal mine. The discrete element simulation method (UDEC software) is adopted to simulate a tailgate of panel 31041 in Chao’hua coal mine. The failure patterns of unsupported and primary supported roadway are simulated, and these reveal the characteristics of deformation, stress and crack propagation. The excavation of roadway leads to high deviator stress, which exceeds the peak strength of shallow surrounding rock and causes it to enter the post-failure stage. Tensile failures then initiate and develop around the roadway, which causes the fragmentation, dilation and separation of shallow surrounding rock. The compressive capacity of the primary support system is low, which results in serious contraction in the full section of the roadway. An improved control scheme is put forward for the support of a tailgate. The underground test results confirm that the improved support system effectively controlled large deformation of the surrounding rocks, which can provide references for support in the design of roadways excavated in deep soft stratum.

When studying the pressure‐relief effect of hard roof blasting and cutting, the roof‐cutting position and angle obviously affect the stability of the rock surrounding the gob‐side entry (GSE). In this paper, control of the large deformation of rock surrounding the GSE is evaluated on the basis of the overlying structure and pressure‐relief principle caused by roof cutting. Moreover, a mechanics model of a three‐hinged arch structure (THAS) and a universal distinct element code (UDEC) numerical model with regard to the overlying rock movement were established to study the relationship among the rotation angle of key blocks in the THAS, the width of the roadway and the wall force beside it, and the optimal cutting position and cutting angle to reveal the pressure‐relief effect of roof blasting and cutting and its influence on the support stability of the roadway. The results show that the overlying rock can form a stable THAS after roof blasting and cutting and that the wall stress and the coal‐wall displacement are small, which indicates that roof blasting and cutting results in obvious pressure relief. The wall force increases with an increase in the rotation angle of the key block and decreases with an increase in the roadway width. Moreover, the optimal roof‐cutting position (5 m) and angle (15°) are obtained with the specific mining conditions. Finally, on‐site monitoring of the anchor‐cable force and support force in panel 5312 of the Jining no. 3 coal mine is used to verify the pressure‐relief effect after roof blasting and cutting. The study results can provide a theoretical basis for reasonable technical means and optimization of supporting parameters in field observation and have important application value for roof cutting and pressure relief for GSE retaining (GSER) technology.

To study the correlation among advancing direction, strata behaviors, and rock burst induction, two physical models utilizing similar materials are established. Subsequently, the influence of advancing direction on the mining effect, caused by a fault, is studied. Moreover, the rock bursts affected by faults with different mining directions are compared and analyzed. The results show that the overlying structure varies notably, affected by fault cutting and fault dip, and the fault‐affected zone and the cause of induced rock burst differ with different mining directions. However, regardless of mining directions, the overlying structure of the hanging wall is stable and fault activation is not obvious, while that of the footwall is relatively active and fault activation is violent; the risk of rock burst on the footwall is larger than that of mining on the hanging wall. Finally, an engineering case regarding two rock bursts in panel 6303 is used to verify some physical simulation results to a certain extent. Study results can serve as a reference for face layout and prevention of rock bursts under similar conditions.

A large area of room mining goaf has been left throughout the history of coal mining worldwide. However, because the pillars cannot perpetually retain stability, the sudden collapse of a large area of goaf can occur. The existing large areas of room mining goaf have become a potential source of geological risks in mining areas with room mining goafs worldwide. To elucidate the distribution and state of the goafs, a survey of the characteristics of goafs was carried out by geophysical exploration and drilling methods. From this complete survey of room mining goafs, this paper has outlined eight common goaf risks, emphasizing the types of goaf risks that require precautions, and the formation mechanisms of each goaf risk has been analyzed. Considering that the occurrence of a risk may lead to several other risks and there is a certain interaction between the risks, more specific room mining goaf risk forms, causes and scopes of influence have been listed. It is advantageous to use a support vector machine, which is useful for small-sample problems, to assess the goafs. A support vector machine assessment model of room mining goafs was established, and sample training and verification were carried out. Comparing the risk assessment results with those of the field investigation, it can be seen that the evaluation model has a high accuracy. This work can greatly contribute to the prediction and prevention of risks induced by room mining goaf.
