Cervical cancer, a common chronic disease, is one of the most prevalent and curable cancers among women. Pap smear images are a popular technique for screening cervical cancer. This study proposes a computer-aided diagnosis for cervical cancer utilizing the novel Cervical Net deep learning (DL) structures and feature fusion with Shuffle Net structural features. Image acquisition and enhancement, feature extraction and selection, as well as classification are the main steps in our cervical cancer screening system. Automated features are extracted using pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNN) fused with a novel Cervical Net structure in which 544 resultant features are obtained. To minimize dimensionality and select the most important features, principal component analysis (PCA) is used as well as canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to obtain the best discriminant features for five classes of Pap smear images. Here, five different machine learning (ML) algorithms are fed into these features. The proposed strategy achieved the best accuracy ever obtained using a support vector machine (SVM), in which fused features between Cervical Net and Shuffle Net is 99.1% for all classes.
Cervical cancer is screened by pap smear methodology for detection and classification purposes. Pap smear images of the cervical region are employed to detect and classify the abnormality of cervical tissues. In this paper, we proposed the first system that it ables to classify the pap smear images into a seven classes problem. Pap smear images are exploited to design a computer-aided diagnoses system to classify the abnormality in cervical images cells. Automated features that have been extracted using ResNet101 are employed to discriminate seven classes of images in Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The success of this proposed system in distinguishing between the levels of normal cases with 100% accuracy and 100% sensitivity. On top of that, it can distinguish between normal and abnormal cases with an accuracy of 100%. The high level of abnormality is then studied and classified with a high accuracy. On the other hand, the low level of abnormality is studied separately and classified into two classes, mild and moderate dysplasia, with ∼ 92% accuracy. The proposed system is a built-in cascading manner with five models of polynomial (SVM) classifier. The overall accuracy in training for all cases is 100%, while the overall test for all seven classes is around 92% in the test phase and overall accuracy reaches 97.3%. The proposed system facilitates the process of detection and classification of cervical cells in pap smear images and leads to early diagnosis of cervical cancer, which may lead to an increase in the survival rate in women.
The fourth most prevalent cancer in women is cervical cancer, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment and prognostic prediction. Conventional cervical cancer screening and classifying methods are less reliable and accurate as they heavily rely on the expertise of a pathologist. As such, colposcopy is an essential part of preventing cervical cancer. Computer-assisted diagnosis is essential for expanding cervical cancer screening because visual screening results in misdiagnosis and low diagnostic effectiveness due to doctors’ increased workloads. Classifying a single cervical cell will overwhelm the physicians, in addition to the existence of overlap between cervical cells, which needs efficient algorithms to separate each cell individually. Focusing on the whole image is the best way and an easy task for the diagnosis. Therefore, looking for new methods to diagnose the whole image is necessary and more accurate. However, existing recognition algorithms do not work well for whole-slide image (WSI) analysis, failing to generalize for different stains and imaging, and displaying subpar clinical-level verification. This paper describes the design of a full ensemble deep learning model for the automatic diagnosis of the WSI. The proposed network discriminates between four classes with high accuracy, reaching up to 99.6%. This work is distinct from existing research in terms of simplicity, accuracy, and speed. It focuses on the whole staining slice image, not on a single cell. The designed deep learning structure considers the slice image with overlapping and non-overlapping cervical cells.
Liver cancer contributes to the increasing mortality rate in the world. Therefore, early detection may lead to a decrease in morbidity and increase the chance of survival rate. This research offers a computer-aided diagnosis system, which uses computed tomography scans to categorize hepatic tumors as benign or malignant. The 3D segmented liver from the LiTS17 dataset is passed through a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to detect and classify the existing tumors as benign or malignant. In this work, we propose a novel light CNN with eight layers and just one conventional layer to classify the segmented liver. This proposed model is utilized in two different tracks; the first track uses deep learning classification and achieves a 95.6% accuracy. Meanwhile, the second track uses the automatically extracted features together with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and achieves 100% accuracy. The proposed network is light, fast, reliable, and accurate. It can be exploited by an oncological specialist, which will make the diagnosis a simple task. Furthermore, the proposed network achieves high accuracy without the curation of images, which will reduce time and cost.
One of the most widespread health issues affecting women is cervical cancer. Early detection of cervical cancer through improved screening strategies will reduce cervical cancer-related morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Using a Pap smear image is a novel method for detecting cervical cancer. Previous studies have focused on whole Pap smear images or extracted nuclei to detect cervical cancer. In this paper, we compared three scenarios of the entire cell, cytoplasm region, or nucleus region only into seven classes of cervical cancer. After applying image augmentation to solve imbalanced data problems, automated features are extracted using three pre-trained convolutional neural networks: AlexNet, DarkNet 19, and NasNet. There are twenty-one features as a result of these scenario combinations. The most important features are split into ten features by the principal component analysis, which reduces the dimensionality. This study employs feature weighting to create an efficient computer-aided cervical cancer diagnosis system. The optimization procedure uses the new evolutionary algorithms known as Ant lion optimization (ALO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Finally, two types of machine learning algorithms, support vector machine classifier, and random forest classifier, have been used in this paper to perform classification jobs. With a 99.5% accuracy rate for seven classes using the PSO algorithm, the SVM classifier outperformed the RF, which had a 98.9% accuracy rate in the same region. Our outcome is superior to other studies that used seven classes because of this focus on the tissues rather than just the nucleus. This method will aid physicians in diagnosing precancerous and early-stage cervical cancer by depending on the tissues, rather than on the nucleus. The result can be enhanced using a significant amount of data.
A corneal ulcer is an open sore that forms on the cornea; it is usually caused by an infection or injury and can result in ocular morbidity. Early detection and discrimination between different ulcer diseases reduces the chances of visual disability. Traditional clinical methods that use slit-lamp images can be tiresome, expensive, and time-consuming. Instead, this paper proposes a deep learning approach to diagnose corneal ulcers, enabling better, improved treatment. This paper suggests two modes to classify corneal images using manual and automatic deep learning feature extraction. Different dimensionality reduction techniques are utilized to uncover the most significant features that give the best results. Experimental results show that manual and automatic feature extraction techniques succeeded in discriminating ulcers from a general grading perspective, with ~93% accuracy using the 30 most significant features extracted using various dimensionality reduction techniques. On the other hand, automatic deep learning feature extraction discriminated severity grading with a higher accuracy than type grading regardless of the number of features used. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to ever attempt to distinguish corneal ulcers based on their grade grading, type grading, ulcer shape, and distribution. Identifying corneal ulcers at an early stage is a preventive measure that reduces aggravation and helps track the efficacy of adapted medical treatment, improving the general public health in remote, underserved areas.
