In this study, some crucial parameters were determined of flexible polymer–organic solar cells prepared from an active layer blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and the fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) mixed in 1:1 mass ratio and deposited from chlorobenzene solution by spin-coating on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/ITO substrates. Additionally, the positive effect of an electron transport layer (ETL) prepared from zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO np) on flexible photovoltaic elements’ performance and stability was investigated. Test devices with above normal architecture and silver back electrodes deposed by magnetron sputtering were constructed under environmental conditions. They were characterized by current-voltage (I–V) measurements, quantum efficiency, impedance spectroscopy, surface morphology, and time–degradation experiments. The control over morphology of active layer thin film was achieved by post-deposition thermal treatment at temperatures of 110–120 °C, which led to optimization of device morphology and electrical parameters. The impedance spectroscopy results of flexible photovoltaic elements were fitted using two R||CPE circuits in series. Polymer–organic solar cells prepared on plastic substrates showed comparable current–voltage characteristics and structural properties but need further device stability improvement according to traditionally constructed cells on glass substrates.

This study focuses on the influence of electrospray deposition parameters on the morphology, topography, optical and sensing properties of ZnO films deposited on gold electrodes of quartz crystal resonators. The substrate temperature, precursor feed rate and emitter’s voltage were varied. Zinc acetate dehydrate dissolved in a mixture of deionized water, ethanol and acetic acid was used as a precursor. The surface morphology and average roughness of the films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D optical profilometry, respectively, while the optical properties were investigated by diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence measurements. The sensing response toward ammonia was tested and verified by the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method. The studies demonstrated that electrospray deposition parameters strongly influence the surface morphology, roughness and gas sensing properties of the films. The deposition parameters were optimized in order for the highest sensitivity toward ammonia to be achieved. The successful implementation of the electrospray method as a simple, versatile and low-cost method for deposition of ammonia-sensitive and selective ZnO films used as a sensing medium in QCM sensors was demonstrated and discussed.

Strong electric fields are generated by radio frequency (RF) plasma sources, and though the RF portion is too high a frequency for ions to react, the direct current (DC) portion of these fields has been shown to cause the atomic migration of metals, which can influence film morphology even downstream of the plasma where ionized plasma species are absent. In particular, we have observed the growth of nanopillars due to metal atoms migrating toward the positive field of the remote plasma. A biased grid placed between the plasma and the substrate can shield the substrate from these fields so that, when grounded, smooth films can be grown to a root mean square roughness of less than 1 nm. Positively biasing the grid returns the growth of nanocolumns. Interestingly, negatively biasing the grid significantly reduced the carbon and hydrocarbon content of gallium nitride films grown at a low temperature (~660 °C) using a nitrogen plasma, as observed using secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and optical absorption measurements. The films also showed a notable improvement in conductivity and visible appearance.

ZnO has been widely used as electron selective material in P3HT:PCBM organic solar cells with either conventional or inverted architecture in order to enhance the extraction of electrons and block the collection of holes at one electrode. In this work we investigate the influence of ZnO nanoparticles electron transport layer (ETL) on the performance and stability of P3HT:PCBM based organic solar cells with conventional architecture and magnetron sputtered back Ag contacts. Their stability in the dark and under real outdoor conditions was monitored by current-voltage measurements and impedance spectroscopy. The impedance spectra were taken as a function of applied bias under illumination in order to reveal more information about the degradation mechanisms taking place in the device.

Organic-type solar cells containing an active layer of block copolymer donor PTB7-Fx (x = 0, 20, and 100), based on benzo [1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene and variably fluorinated thieno [3,4-b]thiophene units, and fullerene acceptor [6,6]phenyl-C71-methylbutyrate, were constructed. The active layer thin film of the solar cells was obtained from a dichlorobenzene solution at an established concentration via spin-coating of the donor–acceptor mixture in the presence of solvent additives such as 3% diiodooctane and 1% triethyl phosphate. Organic photovoltaic elements with normal device architecture were prepared on glass substrates using an indium tin oxide anode, a spin-coated hole transporting layer of poly(ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate, the aforementioned active layer, followed by an electron transporting layer of zinc oxide nanoparticles, and finally a magnetron sputtered silver (Ag) top-electrode. The optical properties, thin film morphology, and the thickness of the active layers were investigated. Additionally, current density–voltage characteristics and impedance spectra of photovoltaic devices were measured. It was found that PTB7-Fx:PC71BM-based solar cells processed in the presence of two types of solvent additives, diiodooctane and triethyl phosphate, with a sputtered Ag top-electrode display similar absorption and quantum efficiency spectra, as well as comparable current density–voltage characteristics and efficiencies to the same devices fabricated without additives. The diiodooctane solvent additive preferably dissolves the fullerene component and has a positive effect on fill factor enhancement, impedance spectra improvement, and amelioration in charge carrier transport and collection, whereas the triethyl phosphate solvent additive preferentially dissolves the copolymer donor and has a more pronounced impact on the refined morphology of the thin film active layers.
