A one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPhC) with a defect layer is utilized as an optical filter in a simple realization of narrow linewidth LED-based sources. The 1DPhC comprising TiO2 and SiO2 layers is characterized by two narrow defect mode resonances within the 1DPhC band gap, or equivalently, by two peaks in the normal incidence transmittance spectrum at wavelengths of 625.4 nm and 697.7 nm, respectively. By combining the optical filter with LEDs, the optical sources are employed in interferometry experiments, and the defect mode resonances of a Lorentzian profile with linewidths of 1.72 nm and 1.29 nm, respectively, are resolved. In addition, a simple way to tune the resonances by changing the angle of incidence of light on the optical filter is demonstrated. All-dielectric optical filters based on 1DPhCs with a defect layer and combined with LEDs thus represent an effective alternative to standard coherent sources, with advantages including narrow spectral linewidths and variable output power, with an extension to tunable sources.

Here, the comparison of two different semiconductor materials is demonstrated, TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 composites—modified with balls of approximately 5 nm Ag nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts for the degradation of the model dye acid orange 7 (AO7). The melem molecule synthesized here is one of a series of organic compounds consisting of triazine ring compounds with a structure similar to that of melam and melamine. The photodegradation process of AO7 was carried out to examine all powder materials as a potential photocatalyst. Additionally, two different lamps of wavelengths 368 nm (UV light) and 420 nm (VIS light) were applied to compare the photodegradation tests. A new synthesis route for the acquisition of Ag NPs (Ag content 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 wt%), based on a wet and low temperature method without the use of reducing reagents was proposed. The best photocatalytic performances under UV and VIS light were obtained for both, TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 materials (new synthesis route) modified with a very low Ag content—0.5 wt%. The photodegradation activities using UV lamp (3 h, 368 nm irradiation) for samples with 0.5 wt% of Ag: TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4, in excess of 95 and 94%, respectively, were achieved. The highest photoactive materials melem/g-C3N4 with 0.5 and 1 wt% Ag revealed 98% of activity under the VIS lamp after 3 h long irradiation. Our work demonstrates a novel, environmentally acceptable, and cost-effective chemical strategy for preparation of photocatalysts suitable for degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment.

Ternary Mn2FeSi alloy was synthesized from pure elemental powders by mechanical alloying, using a high-energy planetary ball mill. The formation of an inverse-Heusler phase after 168 h of milling and subsequent annealing at 1173 K for 1.5 h was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The diffractogram analysis yielded XA structure and the lattice parameter 0.5677 nm in a good agreement with the theoretically obtained value of 0.560 nm. The final powder was formed by particles of irregular shape and median diameter D50 of 3.8 μm and their agglomerates. The chemical analysis resulted in the mean composition of 49.0 at.% Mn, 25.6 at.% Fe and 25.4 at.% Si. At room temperature, the prepared samples featured a heterogeneous magnetic structure consisting of dominant paramagnetic phase confirmed by Mössbauer spectrometry and a weak ferro-/ferrimagnetic contribution detected by magnetization curves. From the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled curves the Néel temperature of 67 K was determined.

Interferometric methods of optical sensing based on the phase shift of the Bloch surface waves (BSWs) and guided waves (GWs) supported by a one-dimensional photonic crystal are presented. The photonic crystal, composed of six SiO2/TiO2 bilayers with a termination layer of TiO2, is employed in the Kretschmann configuration. Under resonance condition, an abrupt phase change is revealed, and the corresponding phase shift is measured by interferometric techniques applied in both the spectral and spatial domains. The spectral interferometric technique employing a birefringent quartz crystal is used to obtain interference of projections of p- and s-polarized light waves reflected from the photonic crystal. The phase shifts are retrieved by processing the spectral interferograms recorded for various values of relative humidity (RH) of air, giving the sensitivity to the RH as high as 0.029 rad/%RH and 0.012 rad/%RH for the BSW and GW, respectively. The spatial interferometric technique employs a Wollaston prism and an analyzer to generate an interference pattern, which is processed to retrieve the phase difference, and results are in good agreement with those obtained by sensing the phase shift in the spectral domain. In addition, from the derivative of the spectral phase shifts, the peak positions are obtained, and their changes with the RH give the sensitivities of 0.094 nm/%RH and 0.061 nm/%RH for the BSW and GW, respectively. These experimental results demonstrate an efficient optical sensing with a lot of applications in various research areas.
