Exact yield estimation of fruits on plants guaranteed fine and timely decisions on harvesting and marketing practices. Automatic yield estimation based on unmanned agriculture offers a viable solution for large orchards. Recent years have witnessed notable progress in computer vision with deep learning for yield estimation. Yet, the current practice of vision-based yield estimation with successive frames may engender fairly great error because of the double counting of repeat fruits in different images. The goal of this study is to provide a wise framework for fruit yield estimation in sequence images. Specifically, the anchor-free detection architecture (CenterNet) is utilized to detect fruits in sequence images from videos collected in the apple orchard and orange orchard. In order to avoid double counts of a single fruit between different images in an image sequence, the patch matching model is designed with the Kuhn–Munkres algorithm to optimize the paring process of repeat fruits in a one-to-one assignment manner for the sound performance of fruit yield estimation. Experimental results show that the CenterNet model can successfully detect fruits, including apples and oranges, in sequence images and achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.939 under an IoU of 0.5. The designed patch matching model obtained an F1-Score of 0.816 and 0.864 for both apples and oranges with good accuracy, precision, and recall, which outperforms the performance of the reference method. The proposed pipeline for the fruit yield estimation in the test image sequences agreed well with the ground truth, resulting in a squared correlation coefficient of R2apple = 0.9737 and R2orange = 0.9562, with a low Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for these two varieties of fruit.

The number of wheat ears is one of the most important factors in wheat yield composition. Rapid and accurate assessment of wheat ear number is of great importance for predicting grain yield and food security-related early warning signal generation. The current wheat ear counting methods rely on manual surveys, which are time-consuming, laborious, inefficient and inaccurate. Existing non-destructive wheat ear detection techniques are mostly applied to near-ground images and are difficult to apply to large-scale monitoring. In this study, we proposed a sampling survey method based on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Firstly, a small number of UAV images were acquired based on the five-point sampling mode. Secondly, an adaptive Gaussian kernel size was used to generate the ground truth density map. Thirdly, a density map regression network (DM-Net) was constructed and optimized. Finally, we designed an overlapping area of sub-images to solve the repeated counting caused by image segmentation. The MAE and MSE of the proposed model were 9.01 and 11.85, respectively. We compared the sampling survey method based on UAV images in this paper with the manual survey method. The results showed that the RMSE and MAPE of NM13 were 18.95 × 104/hm2 and 3.37%, respectively, and for YFM4, 13.65 × 104/hm2 and 2.94%, respectively. This study enables the investigation of the number of wheat ears in a large area, which can provide favorable support for wheat yield estimation.

In the face of global climate change, crop pests and diseases have emerged on a large scale, with diverse species lasting for long periods and exerting wide-ranging impacts. Identifying crop pests and diseases efficiently and accurately is crucial in enhancing crop yields. Nonetheless, the complexity and variety of scenarios render this a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained crop disease classification network integrating the efficient triple attention (ETA) module and the AttentionMix data enhancement strategy. The ETA module is capable of capturing channel attention and spatial attention information more effectively, which contributes to enhancing the representational capacity of deep CNNs. Additionally, AttentionMix can effectively address the label misassignment issue in CutMix, a commonly used method for obtaining high-quality data samples. The ETA module and AttentionMix can work together on deep CNNs for greater performance gains. We conducted experiments on our self-constructed crop disease dataset and on the widely used IP102 plant pest and disease classification dataset. The results showed that the network, which combined the ETA module and AttentionMix, could reach an accuracy as high as 98.2% on our crop disease dataset. When it came to the IP102 dataset, this network achieved an accuracy of 78.7% and a recall of 70.2%. In comparison with advanced attention models such as ECANet and Triplet Attention, our proposed model exhibited an average performance improvement of 5.3% and 4.4%, respectively. All of this implies that the proposed method is both practical and applicable for classifying diseases in the majority of crop types. Based on classification results from the proposed network, an install-free WeChat mini program that enables real-time automated crop disease recognition by taking photos with a smartphone camera was developed. This study can provide an accurate and timely diagnosis of crop pests and diseases, thereby providing a solution reference for smart agriculture.

The three-dimensional (3D) morphological information of wheat grains is an important parameter for discriminating seed health, wheat yield, and wheat quality. High-throughput acquisition of 3D indicators of wheat grains is of great importance for wheat cultivation management, genetic breeding, and economic value. Currently, the 3D morphology of wheat grains still relies on manual investigation, which is subjective, inefficient, and poorly reproducible. The existing 3D acquisition equipment is complicated to operate and expensive, which cannot meet the requirements of high-throughput phenotype acquisition. In this paper, an automatic, economical, and efficient method for the 3D morphometry of wheat grain is proposed. A line laser binocular camera was used to obtain high-quality point-cloud data. A wheat grain 3D model was constructed by point-cloud segmentation, finding, clustering, projection, and reconstruction. Based on this, 3D morphological indicators of wheat grains were calculated. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the length were 0.2256 mm and 2.60%, the width, 0.2154 mm and 5.83%, the thickness, 0.2119 mm and 5.81%, and the volume, 1.7740 mm3 and 4.31%. The scanning time was around 12 s and the data processing time was around 3.18 s under a scanning speed of 25 mm/s. This method can achieve the high-throughput acquisition of the 3D information of wheat grains, and it provides a reference for in-depth study of the 3D morphological indicators of wheat and other grains.

Veins are a critical component of the plant growth and development system, playing an integral role in supporting and protecting leaves, as well as transporting water, nutrients, and photosynthetic products. A comprehensive understanding of the form and function of veins requires a dual approach that combines plant physiology with cutting-edge image recognition technology. The latest advancements in computer vision and machine learning have facilitated the creation of algorithms that can identify vein networks and explore their developmental progression. Here, we review the functional, environmental, and genetic factors associated with vein networks, along with the current status of research on image analysis. In addition, we discuss the methods of venous phenotype extraction and multi-omics association analysis using machine learning technology, which could provide a theoretical basis for improving crop productivity by optimizing the vein network architecture.

Due to the growing expansion of scientific literature and knowledge, access to scholarly contents is becoming more challenging. This paper presents a research profiling framework driven by scientific knowledge graphs (SKGs), which aims at achieving the deep fusion and thorough disclosure of scientific resources and domain knowledge, as well as satisfying the needs of researchers for knowledge overview and acquisition in a reasonable period of time using fine-grained and multi-dimensional profiling scenarios. Further, we conduct the experiment of the SKG construction task on a specific domain by combining scientific literature from Web Of Science and an open knowledge base, and develop a prototype system for user's single entity search to validate the approach, with profile presentations of overall graph view, literature profile, hotness topics list, high-impact experts, and providing a service of profile viewing and download.
