With the various applications of the Internet of Things, research into wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has become increasingly important. However, because of their limited energy, the communication abilities of the wireless nodes distributed in the WSN are limited. The main task of WSNs is to collect more data from targets in an energy-efficient way, because the battery replacement of large amounts of nodes is a labor-consuming work. Although the life of WSNs can be prolonged through energy-harvesting (EH) technology, it is necessary to design an energy-efficient routing protocol for the energy harvesting-based wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs) as the nodes would be unavailable in the energy harvesting phase. A certain number of unavailable nodes would cause a coverage hole, thereby affecting the WSN’s monitoring function of the target environment. In this paper, an adaptive hierarchical-clustering-based routing protocol for EH-WSNs (HCEH-UC) is proposed to achieve uninterrupted coverage of the target region through the distributed adjustment of the data transmission. Firstly, a hierarchical-clustering-based routing protocol is proposed to balance the energy consumption of nodes. Then, a distributed alternation of working modes is proposed to adaptively control the number of nodes in the energy-harvesting mode, which could lead to uninterrupted target coverage. The simulation experimental results verify that the proposed HCEH-UC protocol can prolong the maximal lifetime coverage of WSNs compared with the conventional routing protocol and achieve uninterrupted target coverage using energy-harvesting technology.

Phase change memory (PCM), due to the advantages in capacity and endurance, has the opportunity to become the next generation of general−purpose memory. However, operation speed and data retention are still bottlenecks for PCM development. The most direct way to solve this problem is to find a material with high speed and good thermal stability. In this paper, platinum doping is proposed to improve performance. The 10-year data retention temperature of the doped material is up to 104 °C; the device achieves an operation speed of 6 ns and more than 3 × 105 operation cycles. An excellent performance was derived from the reduced grain size (10 nm) and the smaller density change rate (4.76%), which are less than those of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and Sb2Te3. Hence, platinum doping is an effective approach to improve the performance of PCM and provide both good thermal stability and high operation speed.

Magnetic biosensors have wide applications in biological target detection due to their advantages such as low background noise, convenient detection, and low requirements for sample pretreatment. However, existing magnetic biosensors still have the drawback of low sensitivity compared to optical and electrochemical biosensors. This paper presents the novel design of a high-sensitivity magnetic biosensor by utilizing the magnetic field line convergence effect, which was applied to bacterial detection. The results indicate that it can achieve a detection limitation of 10 CFU/mL, demonstrating that it can be implemented in high-sensitivity biological target detection.

Advancements in deep learning and infrared sensors have facilitated the integration of RGB-thermal (RGBT) tracking technology in computer vision. However, contemporary RGBT tracking methods handle complex image data, resulting in inference procedures with a large number of floating-point operations and parameters, which limits their performance on general-purpose processors. We present a lightweight Siamese dual-stream infrared-enhanced RGBT tracking algorithm, called DuSiamIE.It is implemented on the low-power NVIDIA Jetson Nano to assess its practicality for edge-device applications in resource-limited settings. Our algorithm replaces the conventional backbone network with a modified MobileNetV3 and incorporates light-aware and infrared feature enhancement modules to extract and integrate multimodal information. Finally, NVIDIA TensorRT is used to improve the inference speed of the algorithm on edge devices. We validated our algorithm on two public RGBT tracking datasets. On the GTOT dataset, DuSiamIE achieved a precision (PR) of 83.4% and a success rate (SR) of 66.8%, with a tracking speed of 40.3 frames per second (FPS). On the RGBT234 dataset, the algorithm achieved a PR of 75.3% and an SR of 52.6%, with a tracking speed of 34.7 FPS. Compared with other algorithms, DuSiamIE exhibits a slight loss in accuracy but significantly outperforms them in speed on resource-constrained edge devices. It is the only algorithm among those tested that can perform real-time tracking on such devices.

The convolutional neural network (CNN) has made great success in many fields, and is gradually being applied in edge-computing systems. Taking the limited budget of the resources in the systems into consideration, the implementation of CNNs on embedded devices is preferred. However, accompanying the increasingly complex CNNs is the huge cost of memory, which constrains its implementation on embedded devices. In this paper, we propose an efficient, pipelined convolution module based on a Brain Floating-Point (BF16) to solve this problem, which is composed of a quantization unit, a serial-to-matrix conversion unit, and a convolution operation unit. The mean error of the convolution module based on BF16 is only 0.1538%, which hardly affects the CNN inference. Additionally, when synthesized at 400 MHz, the area of the BF16 convolution module is 21.23% and 18.54% smaller than that of the INT16 and FP16 convolution modules, respectively. Furthermore, our module using the TSMC 90 nm library can run at 1 GHz by optimizing the critical path. Finally, our module was implemented on the Xilinx PYNQ-Z2 board to evaluate the performance. The experimental results show that at the frequency of 100 MHz, our module is, separately, 783.94 times and 579.35 times faster than the Cortex-M4 with FPU and Hummingbird E203, while maintaining an extremely low error rate.

Hand detection plays an important role in human–computer interaction. Because of the convenient and natural advantages of hands, hand detection is increasingly used in virtual reality, remote control, and other fields. However, since the complex background and the diversity of hand postures, the YOLOv4 algorithm for hand detection suffers from low accuracy and robustness. Therefore, A YOLOv4-HAND network, improved from YOLOv4, is proposed to solve the problem. We first use the dilation convolution to build the feature enhancement pyramid that enables the network to expand semantic information. Second, for better detection of different hand scales, we design a multiscale attention module to capture the correlation of channel information within different scales. Third, we design a head that incorporates a spatial attention module to compensate for the network’s lack of spatial contextual location information correlation. Finally, we use soft nonmaximum suppression to reduce the impact of occlusion. The results show that the YOLOv4-HAND detection network can achieve 83.22% and 93.95% mAP on the publicly available datasets Oxford hand and Egohands datasets. Compared with the most recent method, the YOLOv4-HAND network effectively improves the accuracy of hand detection for practical applications.
