We demonstrate an all-PM Er-doped soliton mode-locked fiber oscillator based on the figure-9 configuration with a compact adjustable reflection-type non-reciprocal phase shifter. An analytical model based on the Jones matrix is established to simulate the wavelength tuning phenomenon. Experimentally, it is observed that the increase in pump power results in a significant redshift in the spectrum of output pulses. When the angle of the half-wave plate is rotated in one direction, the output spectrum is redshifted and then blueshifted successively. Good qualitative agreement is presented between the simulations and the experimental results. It is shown that the increase in pump power changes the nonlinear phase shift, which causes the redshift of the transmittance curves at the laser output port. In contrast, the rotation of wave plates not only changes the nonlinear phase shift difference, but also causes variations in linear phase bias and modulation depth. The changes in these parameters lead to the redshift and blueshift of the transmission curves, which enables wavelength tuning.

The influence of residual heat on the fictive temperature modification zone of fused silica for different CO2 laser scanning time intervals was investigated to precisely control the profiles of hydrofluoric (HF) acid-etched fused silica surface, which were formed by the increasing HF acid-etching rate for fused silica with increasing fictive temperature induced by CO2 laser scanning. The surface profiles of HF acid-etched fused silica treated by different scanning time intervals of CO2 laser were measured by a stylus profilometry, and experimental results indicate that the CO2 laser scanning time intervals intensively influence the HF acid-etched surface profiles of fused silica. The increasing depth of surface profiles treated by shorter scanning time intervals shows that the fictive temperature modification zone significantly expands. Numerical simulations of the fictive temperature modification zone induced by different scanning time intervals indicate that the residual heat of CO2 laser scanning with shorter time intervals leads to a dramatical increase in the fictive temperature modification zone. By adjusting the residual heat of CO2 laser scanning intervals, various surface profiles of fused silica can be obtained by HF acid-etching of fused silica.

A high power and efficiency mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator based on a BaGa4Se7 crystal is demonstrated in this paper. It was pumped by a 500 Hz Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at room temperature. Without cooling, up to 0.76 W output power at 4.43 μm was generated with respect to the incident pump power (1064 nm) of 5.52 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 13.7%. The corresponding slope efficiency was as high as 18.7%. The pulse width of the signal wave was 5.2 ns at the pump pulse of 13.7 ns. To the best of our knowledge, this is to date the highest output power achieved at 4–5 μm from a 1064 nm pumped BGSe OPO laser. Considering that no additional cooling system was applied, this work provides a good solution for a high-efficient, compact or even portable mid-infrared solid-state laser device.

The sealed neutron tube shell dissection process utilizing the traditional lathe turning method suffers from low efficiency and high cost due to the frequency of replacement of the diamond knife. In this study, a hybrid dissection method is introduced by combining the continuous-wave (CW) laser for efficient tangential groove production with an ultra-short pulse laser for delamination scanning removal. In this method, a high-power CW laser is firstly employed to make a tapered groove on the shell’s surface, and then a femtosecond pulse laser is used to micromachine the groove in order to obtain a cutting kerf. The thermal field was theoretically investigated in a finite element model. The simulation results show that the width of the area of temperature exceeding 100 °C is 1.9 mm and 0.4 mm with rotating speeds of 20 rad/s and 60 rad/s, respectively. In addition, a 2 mm deep slot in the 25 mm diameter tube was successfully produced in 1 min by a kilowatt fiber laser, and a 500-femtosecond pulse laser was employed to cut a plate with a material removal rate of 0.2 mm3/min. By using the hybrid method, the cutting efficiency was improved about 49 times compared to the femtosecond laser cutting. According to the simulation and experimental results, this method provides a high-efficiency and non-thermal cutting technique for reclaimed metallic neutron tube shells with millimeter-level thick walls, which has the advantages of non-contact, minimal thermal diffusion, and no effect of molten slag. It is indicated that the hybrid dissection method not only offers a new solution for thick neutron tube shell cutting but also extends the application of laser cutting techniques.

A multi-wavelength mid-IR laser consisting of 3.05 μm, 4.25 μm, and 5.47 μm BaGa4Se7(BGSe)optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) switched by DKDP electro-optic switches with one 10 Hz/7.6 ns pumping wave is demonstrated. Maximum energies at 3.05 μm, 4.25 μm, and 5.47 μm are 1.35 mJ, 1.03 mJ, and 0.56 mJ, respectively, corresponding to optical-to-optical conversion efficiencies of 9.4%, 7.6%, and 4.2%. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of generation of three mid-IR wavelength lasers using electro-optic switches. Furthermore, this study provides a viable solution for a high-energy or high-power, compact, or even portable multi-wavelength mid-IR laser device that employs a single pumping wave.
