The heterogeneity of grain quality can lead to limited predictability of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the wheat yield, especially with an increase in the importance of drought and salinity caused by climate change. This study was undertaken with the aim of creating basic tools for phenotyping and assessing the sensitivity of genotypes to salt effects at the level of some wheat kernel attributes. The study considers 36 variants of the experiment, including four wheat cultivars—Zolotaya, Ulyanovskaya 105, Orenburgskaya 10, Orenburgskaya 23; three treatment variants—control (without salt) and two salts exposure (NaCl at a concentration of 1.1 g L−1 and Na2SO4 at a concentration of 0.4 g L−1); as well as three options for the arrangement of kernels in a simple spikelet—left, middle, and right. It has been established that the salt exposure had a positive effect on the percentage of kernel fulfilling in the cultivars Zolotaya, Ulyanovskaya 105, and Orenburgskaya 23 compared to control. The kernels of the Orenburgskaya 10 variety matured better in the experiment with Na2SO4 exposure, while the control variant and NaCl gave the same effect. When exposed to NaCl, significantly greater values of weight, transverse section area, and transverse section perimeter of the kernel were noted in the cv Zolotaya and Ulyanovskaya 105. Cv Orenburgskaya 10 responded positively to the use of Na2SO4. This salt caused an increase in the area, length, and width of the kernel. The fluctuating asymmetry of the left, middle, and right kernels in the spikelet was calculated. In the cv Orenburgskaya 23 the salts affected only the kernel perimeter among parameters examined. The indicators of the general (fluctuating) asymmetry were lower in the experiments with the use of salts, i.e., kernels were more symmetrical than in the control variant, both for the cultivar as a whole and when compared taking into account the kernel location in spikelet. However, this result was unexpected, since salt stress inhibited a number of morphological parameters: the number and average length of embryonic, adventitious, and nodal roots, flag leaf area, plant height, dry biomass accumulation, and plant productivity indicators. The study showed that low concentrations of salts can positively affect the fulfilling of kernels (the absence of a cavity inside the kernel) and the symmetry of the left and right sides of the kernel.

Wheat is one of the most important crops in the world, providing food for most of the world’s population. Wheat seeds are a popular model object for many experiments to evaluate various factors that improve germination or protect against various adverse stressful effects. Based on the high significance of increasing the productivity of this cereal crop and the applicability of this object, a detailed statistical evaluation of wheat grain (kernel) morphometry was carried out to assess the asymmetry of parameters of this ideal model. Depending on the location of the kernels in the spikelet of a wheat spike, there was a significant asymmetry between the right and left cheeks of the kernels located closer or further from the center of the spikelet. The expressiveness of asymmetry, and consequently, the kernel deformation was higher in the lower kernels of the spikelet. The degree of symmetry; that is, the similarity of the two halves (cheeks) and the kernel as a whole, was higher in kernels located higher in the spikelet. It seems that the reason for this phenomenon lies in the mechanical nature of kernel deformation. The ultrastructure of A-type and B-type starch grains in the central part of the kernel had significant differences between the upper and lower kernels, which indicated in favor of a high probability of differences by the composition and quality of kernels of the same variety when assessed separately. Uniform development of kernels and smaller differences between them may reveal more valuable genotypes in the future, provided their steady reproduction under adverse conditions of a changing climate.

Cymbidium erythrostylum Rolfe is one of the most beautiful species of the genus cymbidium which is used as a cut flower or indoor plant. However, it was registered as a rare species even in its original habitat. This study was carried out to develop a protocol for in vitro propagation of C. erythrostilum. We used protosomes obtained by the asymbiotic germination of seed on 1/2 of Murashige and Skoog nutrient medium (MS) supplemented with 1 mg/L 2-Isopentenyl adenine (2iP) as objects of study. During the multiplication stage, the number of formed protosomes on a culture medium containing 0.8 mg/L 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) was higher (3.8 ± 0.2 protosomes). During the subsequent cultivation on ½ MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/L 6-BAP and 0.5 mg/L a-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), the highest numbers of shoots (4.00 ± 0.19 shoots/plantlet) and leaves (4.50 ± 0.14 leaves/plantlet) were obtained. At the rooting stage under in vitro conditions, the most effective was the use of ½ MS nutrient medium with the addition of 0.5 mg/L of indolyl-3-butyric acid IBA, 1 g/l charcoal, and 50 g/l banana puree. The obtained plants were successfully adapted to a substrate consisting of bark, perlite, and peat in a ratio of 1:1:1.

Lavandula angustifolia is a promising essential oil and ornamental crop whose distribution in the temperate zone and northern regions is limited by its low winter hardiness. Analyzing the causes of low winter hardiness will facilitate the selection of the most winter-hardy hybrids. The study goal is to evaluate the climatic conditions and winter hardiness of narrow-leaved lavender and to determine critical conditions for the successful overwintering of plants in the conditions of Moscow. The studies were conducted in the laboratory of cultivated plants of MBG RAS from 2015 to 2022. The research objects were 72 lavender hybrids. The assessment of hybrids’ winter hardiness was carried out after complete snow melt. Average daily temperature, snow cover height, and precipitation were considered daily. Data statistical processing was carried out using Microsoft Excel and PAST 4.5 software. Optimal lavender overwintering conditions were formed in 2018 and the greatest plant damage was observed in 2017. The research years were grouped by winter hardiness structured into clusters, which allowed us to identify common features in climatic conditions and to identify critical periods of the winter period leading to a decrease in winter hardiness. Temperature fluctuations in winter, frequent temperature transitions over the 0 °C mark, high levels of snow cover and the formation of ice deposits led to severe damage to some lavender hybrids. Severe frosts in the absence of snow cover can lead to the death of lavender plants in the temperate zone. Lavender hybrids were grouped by winter hardiness into two clusters and 11 subclusters. A group of hybrids with consistently high resistance has been selected throughout the years of the study; these hybrids are the most promising for further hybridization.

Blackberries are a valuable crop that has a positive effect on human health due to its fruits’ antioxidant and antihyperglycemic properties. The main goal of the research was to compare the fruit parameters of modern blackberry varieties. The experiment involved six varieties of blackberries: ‘Natchez’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Brzezina’, ‘Black Gem’, ‘Heaven Can Wait’, and ‘Ouachita’. The data were collected in 2021–2022 in the Rostov region of Russia. On one hectare, 3000 plants with trellises were planted. To prevent winter damage, the plants were covered for the winter period with a non-woven covering material with a density of 60 g/m2. To assess the quality of the fruits, harvesting was carried out from seven to nine in the morning once every 5–6 days. The results showed that the most productive varieties are the ‘Loch Tay’ (4.8 kg/bush), ‘Black Gem’ (4.2 kg/bush), ‘Heaven Can Wait’ (3.9 kg/bush), and ‘Ouachita’ (3.8 kg/bush) varieties. The heaviest fruits are as follows: ‘Natchez’ (13.3 g), ‘Black Gem’ (11.2 g), and ‘Ouachita’ (10.3 g). The varieties with the highest amount of sugar are the following: ‘Black Gem’ (14.7 Brix), ‘Ouachita’ (13.4 Brix), ‘Loch Tay’ (12.9 Brix), and ‘Heaven Can Wait’ (11.6 Brix). In terms of the combination of the parameters, the most promising varieties for industrial production in this region are the ‘Ouachita’, ‘Black Gem’, ‘Loch Tay’, and ‘Heaven Can Wait’ varieties. Medium and strong relationships were established between the parameters of the fruits and the elemental composition of the leaves. During the study, we also developed systems of equations for predicting the parameters of a berry based on the content of one or another macro and microelement of a leaf; these systems are suitable for both the manual calculations in nurseries and the correcting of programs for the automated determination of fruit quality and the calculation of productivity in large industrial farms. The obtained data will make it possible to increase the blackberry production area in Russia from 4.34% to 22.06% in various growing regions.

Relevance. Modern raspberry varieties (Rubus idaeus L.) have great potential for cultivation using Long Cane technology.Methods. The study compared raspberry varieties Ovation, Wengi, and Vajolet. Seedlings were obtained from root cuttings, then grown from April 2021 to July 2022 for the summer harvest and from April 2022 to October 2022 for the fall harvest.Results. It has been established that varietal characteristics and the fruiting period significantly affect the indicators. The largest fruits are in the Wengi variety (length 25.5 mm, diameter 24.3 mm, weight 7.2 g), the smallest are in the Ovation variety (length 22.2 mm, diameter 22.5 mm, weight 4.9 g). When observing varieties at different ripening periods, it was found that the fruit length (27.3 mm) and fruit weight (8.3 mm) during the summer fruiting period are maximum in the Wengi variety, and minimum in the Vajolet variety. The amount of sugar ranges from 11 to 13°Bx, the percentage of ripe fruits from 84.5 to 94.5. The difference between the Wengi and Ovation varieties in terms of vegetative characteristics at different growing periods has been reliably proven. During the summer fruiting period, the yield per shoot for Wengi was 2615 g, for Vajolet – 485 g. The Wengi variety was distinguished by its maximum length (27.3 mm) and fruit weight (8.3 g). Based on all the indicators, the most promising varieties for summer fruiting are Wengi and Vajolet, and for autumn fruiting – Ovation.
