The challenges of handling user-hostile alkaline solutions in the conventional alkali-activated binders (AAB) have initiated the development of “just add water” or one-part solid-based AAB systems. This paper aims to present a preliminary investigation on the development of one-part ambient-cured alkali-activated binders produced by synthesising high-calcium fly ash (HCFA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) using sodium metasilicate anhydrous. Three test series were conducted in this study to investigate the effects of GGBS/binder, activator/binder and water/binder ratios on the fresh and hardened properties of the one-part synthesis AAB system. It was found that the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio plays an important role in the attainment of compressive strength and limits the amounts of solid activators effective in contributing to the alkali-activation reaction process. The optimum SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio was found between 3.20 and 3.30. The test results revealed that the optimum proportion between HCFA and GGBS was discovered at a GGBS/binder ratio of 0.50. The optimum activator/binder ratio was between 0.08 and 0.12, and it is recommended that the water/binder ratio should not exceed 0.50. This study demonstrated the potential of the one-part synthesis method in the production of alkali-activated binder for practical structural applications.

This research investigates the effect of pre-soaking treatment on plant-based aggregate using a wet grout binder to formulate a high-strength lightweight concrete (HSLWC). Surface modification utilising a novel grout soaking technique with various water-to-cement (w/c) ratios has indicated a new method of approach for the recent development of lightweight plant-based aggregate (LWPA). In this experiment, the fresh and hardened properties of modified LWPA lightweight concrete were assessed by verifying their workability, densities, compressive and split tensile strengths towards the modulus of elasticity. The results showed that pre-soaking plant-based lightweight aggregate (w/c: 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2) slightly increased the density of the samples compared to untreated LWPA. The oven-dry density of treated and untreated LWPA is controlled in the range of HSLWC. The outcomes indicated that the workability of the surface-modified LWPA is significantly improved: up to 40% in 6 min for the (TDS)/0.6 sample compared to the original LWPA. The mechanical properties of the LWPA concrete with the surface modification method exhibit a substantial increment of compressive strength, split tensile strength and the modulus of elasticity; recorded at 22%, 26% and 34%, respectively. Significantly, the findings from this experiment reveal that the pre-soaking treatment method on LWPA is shown to be a highly recommended technique in improving interfacial bonding while maintaining its performance as one of the most promising solutions to improve the properties of lightweight concrete.

Conventional compressive strength test of concrete involves the destruction of concrete samples or existing structures. Thus, the focus of this research is to ascertain a more effective method to assess the compressive strength of concrete, especially during the hardening process. One of the prevalent non-destructive test (NDT) methods that involves the employment of elastic wave has been proposed to forecast the compressive strength development of air-entrained rubberized concrete. The change of the properties, such as wave amplitude, velocity and dominant frequency of the wave that propagates within the concrete is investigated. These wave parameters are then correlated with the compressive strength data, obtained using the conventional compressive strength test. It has been certified that both correlation between wave amplitude and concrete compressive strength, as well as the correlation between velocity and concrete compressive strength, have high regression degrees, which are 0.9404 and 0.8788, respectively. On the contrary, dominant wave frequency has been proved imprecise to be used to correlate with the concrete compressive strength development, as a low correlation coefficient of 0.2677 is reported. In a nutshell, the correlation data of wave amplitude and velocity could be used to forecast the compressive strength development of an air-entrained rubberized concrete in the future.

This study aims to investigate a new shear reinforcement method which utilizes thin mild steel (TMS) plates as shear reinforcement in deep beams to replace conventional reinforcement. Thirteen reinforced concrete deep beam specimens with three different plate thicknesses and four varying perforated hole arrangements on the TMS plates were experimentally tested to determine the load-carrying capacity and crack pattern. The experimental results indicate that the 2.0 mm thick TMS plate has the highest load-carrying capacity. Among the four different hole arrangements on the TMS plates, the perforated plates with a three-column hole arrangement show the best performance in terms of load-carrying capacity, with a 2.9% increment against the control beam specimen. The specimens also demonstrated compatible elastic stiffness with the control beam that used conventional shear links. This shows that TMS plates have the potential to replace conventional shear links in deep beams. This proposed method also changed the failure mode from conventional diagonal shear tension failure to a combination of flexural failure and shear deformation. A numerical model was developed and was found to have a good correlation with the experimental results, demonstrating potential for use in future parametric investigations on deep beams and cost reduction in future experimental work.

This paper investigates the mechanical properties of lightweight foamed composite (LFC) with the inclusion of kenaf fibres and superplasticizer. NaOH treated kenaf fibre contents of 0.4%, 0.45% and 0.5% (by weight of cement) with 5cm length were used in composite. The density of 1000kg/m3 to 2000kg/m3 foamed concrete was used for all the tested specimens. The ratio of cement, sand and water used was 1:1.5:0.45. All the experiments were set up in accordance with International standard methods of testing. In reference to the results and discussion, the different percentages of fibre used were proven to have a lesser contribution towards compressive strength or might even have reduced the result. The results also showed that water absorption and density of the composite mortar increased as the volume of fiber increased from 0.4% to 0.5% However, a higher percentage of fiber inclusions had been recorded to have a positive contribution towards flexural and tensile splitting properties of composites.
