Underwater images often have severe quality degradation and distortion due to light absorption and scattering in the water medium. A hazy image formation model is widely used to restore the image quality. It depends on two optical parameters: the background light (BL) and the transmission map (TM). Underwater images can also be enhanced by color and contrast correction from the perspective of image processing. In this paper, we propose an effective underwater image enhancement method for underwater images in composition of underwater image restoration and color correction. Firstly, a manually annotated background lights (MABLs) database is developed. With reference to the relationship between MABLs and the histogram distributions of various underwater images, robust statistical models of BLs estimation are provided. Next, the TM of R channel is roughly estimated based on the new underwater dark channel prior (NUDCP) via the statistic of clear and high resolution (HD) underwater images, then a scene depth map based on the underwater light attenuation prior (ULAP) and an adjusted reversed saturation map (ARSM) are applied to compensate and modify the coarse TM of R channel. Next, TMs of G-B channels are estimated based on the difference of attenuation ratios between R and G-B channels. Finally, to improve the color and contrast of the restored image with a dehazed and natural appearance, a variation of white balance is introduced as post-processing. In order to guide the priority of underwater image enhancement, sufficient evaluations are conducted to discuss the impacts of the key parameters including BL and TM, and the importance of the color correction. Comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that our proposed underwater image enhancement method can achieve higher accuracy of estimated BLs, lower computation time, overall superior performance, and better information retention.

Dams have made great contributions to human society, facilitating flood control, power generation, shipping, agriculture, and industry. However, the construction of dams greatly impacts downstream ecological environments and nearby marine areas. The present manuscript presents a comprehensive review of the influence of human activities on the environment, especially the effect of dam construction on the ecosystems of river estuaries and nearby marine areas, so as to provide a scientific basis for ecological environment protection. To summarize these impacts, this review used recent studies to comprehensively analyze how dam construction has affected river hydrology, geomorphology, and downstream ecosystems globally. Effects of dams on ecosystems occur through reduced river flow, reduced sediment flux, altered water temperature, changed estuary delta, altered composition and distribution of nutrients, altered structure and distribution of phytoplankton populations, habitat fragmentation, and blocked migration routes in river sections and adjacent seas. Effects of dam construction (especially the Three Gorges Dam) on the Yangtze River were also reviewed. Performing community and mitigation planning before dam construction, exploring new reservoir management strategies (including targeted control of dam storage and flushing sediment operations), banning fishing activities, and removing unnecessary dams (obsolete or small dams) are becoming crucial tools for ecosystem restoration.

The traditional multi-level grid multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) requires interpolation calculations in time and space. It is a complex and computationally intensive process. By using the buffer technique, this paper proposes a new multi-level grid MRT-LBM which requires only spatial interpolation calculations. The proposed method uses a center point format to store multi-level grid information. The grid type determination in the flow field calculation domain is done using the axis aligned bounding box (AABB) triangle overlap test. According to the calculation characteristics of MRT-LBM, the buffer grid is proposed for the first time at the interface of different levels of grids, which is used to remove the temporal interpolation calculation and simplify the spatial interpolation calculation. The corresponding multi-level grid MRT-LBM algorithm is also presented for two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow field calculation problems. For the two-dimensional problem of flow around a circular cylinder, the simulation results show that a four-level grid MRT-LBM proposed in this paper can accurately obtain the aerodynamic coefficients and Strouhal number at different Reynolds numbers, and it has about 1/9 of the total number of grids as a single-level grid MRT-LBM and is 6.76 times faster. For the three-dimensional flow calculation problem, the numerical experiments of flow past a sphere are simulated to verify the numerical precision of the presented method at Reynolds numbers = 100, 200, 250, 300, and 1000. With the streamlines and velocity contours, it is demonstrated that the multi-level grid MRT-LBM can be calculated accurately even at the interface of different size grids.

Aquatic products are good sources of essential nutrients, but the presence of pyrethroids (PYRs) as contaminants may pose risks to consumer health as the intricate matrices of PYRs usually obstruct chemical hazard detection. In this study, a gas chromatographic method was established and validated for simultaneously detecting residues of seven PYRs (cyhalothrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, tau-fluvalinate, fenvalerate, deltamethrin) in aquatic products. The aim of this method was to assess better the potential risks of pesticide residues in aquatic products. The PYRs in aquatic products were extracted with acetonitrile, purified with n-hexane saturated with acetonitrile, and cleaned up on a Cleanert® Alumina N column. Statistical analysis and orthogonal array experimental design were used to optimize the key parameters. To validate the proposed method, commonly consumed aquatic products (such as carp, crucian carp, whiteleg shrimp, river crab, sea cucumber, and scallop) were obtained from local supermarkets in Shanghai. Satisfied linearity of the calibration curves was achieved in a matrix-matched standard solution, with a correlation coefficient (R2) larger than 0.995. The average recoveries at five fortification levels varied from 77.0% to 117.2%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 11.1%. Concerning electron capture detection, the limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) were 2.0–5.0 µg/kg and 5.0–10.0 µg/kg, respectively. These results demonstrate the high stability and sensitivity of this method for simultaneously detecting PYRs in aquatic products, having great practicability and which can be popularized easily.
