Optical turbulence strongly affects different types of optoelectronic and adaptive optics systems. Systematic direct measurements of optical turbulence profiles [Cn2(h)] are lacking for many climates and seasons, particularly in marine environments, because it is impractical and expensive to deploy instrumentation. Here, a backpropagation neural network optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA-BP) is developed to estimate atmospheric turbulence profiles in marine environments which is validated against corresponding [Cn2(h)] profile datasets from a field campaign of balloon-borne microthermal measurements at the Haikou marine environment site. Overall, the trend and magnitude of the GA-BP model and measurements agree. The [Cn2(h)] profiles from the GA-BP model are generally superior to those obtained by BP and the physically-based (HMNSP99) models. Several statistical operators were used to quantify the GA-BP model performance on reconstructing the optical turbulence profiles in marine environments. The characterization of vertical distributions of optical turbulence profiles and the main integral parameters derived from [Cn2(h)] profiles are presented. The median Fried parameter, isoplanatic angle, and coherence time are 9.94 cm, 0.69″, and 2.85 ms, respectively, providing independent optical turbulence parameters for adaptive optics systems. The proposed approach exhibits potential for implementation in ground-based optical applications in marine environments.

The model of atmosphere optical turbulence is important in the research field of laser atmospheric transmission, and plays a key role in astronomical site selection. In this paper, the single and overall statistical analysis between different outer scale models (HMNSP99 and the Dewan model) were conducted and the results show that the HMNSP99 model has better performance with the lowest bias, root mean square error, and center root mean square error. The results of the statistical analysis of three turbulence parameters revealed that there is a correlation between turbulence parameters and statistical operators, where statistical operators increase significantly when wind shear and temperature gradient respectively exceed 0.016 s−1, 0 K/m, and the outer scale is within 2.5 m. Furthermore, a new statistical outer-scale model, the WSTG model, is proposed and the results of statistical analysis present that the WSTG model is more reliable than the HMNSP99 model in reconstructing optical turbulence strength. These results acquired from this paper add substantially to our understanding of atmosphere optical turbulence and the conclusions can be applied to improve the performance of an adaptive optics system and astronomical site selection.

Planetary boundary-layer height is an important physical quantity for weather forecasting models and atmosphere environment assessment. A method of simultaneously extracting the surface-layer height (SLH), mixed-layer height (MLH), and aerosol optical properties, which include aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC) and aerosol optical depth (AOD), based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the same coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) is proposed. The method employs wavelet covariance transform to locate the SLH and MLH using the local maximum positions and an automatic algorithm of dilation operation. AEC and AOD are determined by the fitting curve using the SNR equation. Furthermore, the method demonstrates the influential mechanism of optical properties on the SLH and MLH. MLH is linearly correlated with AEC and AOD because of solar heating increasing. The results were verified by the data of an ocean island site in China.

Astronomical seeing is important for monitoring the atmospheric environment, observation scheduling and management, and selecting astronomical sites. This study first attempts to establish a near-global astronomical seeing map by employing the fifth European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis (ERA5) data combined with the estimated model. Then, some example sites’ results from ERA5 were compared against the astronomical seeing results from the balloon-borne microthermal measurements and the differential image motion monitor (DIMM) instrument. The global astronomical seeing variations exhibit large spatial dependence. The best seeing areas are generally discerned over the mid-latitude regions, consistent with the regions of the European Southern Observatory and Tibetan Plateau. In addition, the astronomical seeing values of the Tibetan Plateau in spring are better than in the other seasons. The site results from ERA5 show that the astronomical seeing values of some example sites are generally consistent with the measurements. Overall, the global astronomical seeing map presented in this study can provide a reference and basis to further understand the astronomy site selection and optoelectronics equipment observation path selection.

Marine atmospheric boundary-layer height (MABLH) is crucial for ocean heat, momentum, and substance transfer, affecting ocean circulation, climate, and ecosystems. Due to the unique geographical location of the South China Sea (SCS), coupled with its complex atmospheric environment and sparse ground-based observation stations, accurately determining the MABLH remains challenging. Coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL), as a laser-based active remote sensing technology, provides high-resolution wind profiling by transmitting pulsed laser beams and analyzing backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we developed a stacking optimal ensemble model (SOEM) to estimate MABLH in the vicinity of the site by integrating CDWL measurements from a representative SCS site with ERA5 (fifth-generation reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) data from December 2019 to May 2021. Based on the categorization of the total cloud cover data into weather conditions such as clear/slightly cloudy, cloudy/transitional, and overcast/rainy, the SOEM demonstrates enhanced performance with an average mean absolute percentage error of 3.7%, significantly lower than the planetary boundary-layer-height products of ERA5. The SOEM outperformed random forest, extreme gradient boosting, and histogram-based gradient boosting models, achieving a robustness coefficient (R2) of 0.95 and the lowest mean absolute error of 32 m under the clear/slightly cloudy condition. The validation conducted in the coastal city of Qingdao further confirmed the superiority of the SOEM in resolving meteorological heterogeneity. The predictions of the SOEM aligned well with CDWL observations during Typhoon Sinlaku (2020), capturing dynamic disturbances in MABLH. Overall, the SOEM provides a precise approach for estimating convective boundary-layer height, supporting marine meteorology, onshore wind power, and coastal protection applications.
