Optical turbulence strongly affects different types of optoelectronic and adaptive optics systems. Systematic direct measurements of optical turbulence profiles [] are lacking for many climates and seasons, particularly in marine environments, because it is impractical and expensive to deploy instrumentation. Here, a backpropagation neural network optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA-BP) is developed to estimate atmospheric turbulence profiles in marine environments which is validated against corresponding [] profile datasets from a field campaign of balloon-borne microthermal measurements at the Haikou marine environment site. Overall, the trend and magnitude of the GA-BP model and measurements agree. The [] profiles from the GA-BP model are generally superior to those obtained by BP and the physically-based (HMNSP99) models. Several statistical operators were used to quantify the GA-BP model performance on reconstructing the optical turbulence profiles in marine environments. The characterization of vertical distributions of optical turbulence profiles and the main integral parameters derived from [] profiles are presented. The median Fried parameter, isoplanatic angle, and coherence time are 9.94 cm, , and 2.85 ms, respectively, providing independent optical turbulence parameters for adaptive optics systems. The proposed approach exhibits potential for implementation in ground-based optical applications in marine environments.
Planetary boundary-layer height is an important physical quantity for weather forecasting models and atmosphere environment assessment. A method of simultaneously extracting the surface-layer height (SLH), mixed-layer height (MLH), and aerosol optical properties, which include aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC) and aerosol optical depth (AOD), based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the same coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) is proposed. The method employs wavelet covariance transform to locate the SLH and MLH using the local maximum positions and an automatic algorithm of dilation operation. AEC and AOD are determined by the fitting curve using the SNR equation. Furthermore, the method demonstrates the influential mechanism of optical properties on the SLH and MLH. MLH is linearly correlated with AEC and AOD because of solar heating increasing. The results were verified by the data of an ocean island site in China.
Coherent Doppler wind lidar has become a primary remote sensing technique for measuring atmospheric wind fields in recent years. However, the high bandwidth of the time domain echo signal has limited real-time data acquisition and processing. In this work, we propose a real-time data acquisition and preprocessing integrated solution. This approach is implemented using on-chip system field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware while utilizing a 7-channel base-4 polyphase fast Fourier transform calculation module and a pipelined structure operation. Within a 1 s data collection time, the real-time rapid acquisition and spectral preprocessing of lidar echo signals at a range of 9.9 km can be achieved. We compare the observation data with the measurement data from Windcube100s and radiosondes, and the results indicate that the coherent wind lidar developed in this paper can detect heights above 4.0 km, with effective data acquisition rates of 82% and 61% in the height ranges of 1500–2000 m and 2000–2500 m, respectively. At the height range of 3.5 km, the correlations for horizontal wind speed and direction measured by the lidar were all above 0.99, with the wind speed and direction measurement deviations being better than 0.56 m/s and 8.40, respectively.
Marine atmospheric boundary-layer height (MABLH) is crucial for ocean heat, momentum, and substance transfer, affecting ocean circulation, climate, and ecosystems. Due to the unique geographical location of the South China Sea (SCS), coupled with its complex atmospheric environment and sparse ground-based observation stations, accurately determining the MABLH remains challenging. Coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL), as a laser-based active remote sensing technology, provides high-resolution wind profiling by transmitting pulsed laser beams and analyzing backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we developed a stacking optimal ensemble model (SOEM) to estimate MABLH in the vicinity of the site by integrating CDWL measurements from a representative SCS site with ERA5 (fifth-generation reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) data from December 2019 to May 2021. Based on the categorization of the total cloud cover data into weather conditions such as clear/slightly cloudy, cloudy/transitional, and overcast/rainy, the SOEM demonstrates enhanced performance with an average mean absolute percentage error of 3.7%, significantly lower than the planetary boundary-layer-height products of ERA5. The SOEM outperformed random forest, extreme gradient boosting, and histogram-based gradient boosting models, achieving a robustness coefficient () of 0.95 and the lowest mean absolute error of 32 m under the clear/slightly cloudy condition. The validation conducted in the coastal city of Qingdao further confirmed the superiority of the SOEM in resolving meteorological heterogeneity. The predictions of the SOEM aligned well with CDWL observations during Typhoon Sinlaku (2020), capturing dynamic disturbances in MABLH. Overall, the SOEM provides a precise approach for estimating convective boundary-layer height, supporting marine meteorology, onshore wind power, and coastal protection applications.
In this study, we devised a constraint method, called multi-model ensemble pattern (MEP), to estimate the refractive index structure parameter () profiles based on observational data and multiple existing models. We verified this approach against radiosonde data from field campaigns in China’s eastern and northern coastal areas. Multi-dimensional statistical evaluations for the profiles and integrated astronomical parameters have proved MEP’s relatively reliable performance in estimating optical turbulence in the atmosphere. The correlation coefficients of MEP and measurement overall in two areas are up to 0.65 and 0.76. A much higher correlation can be found for a single radiosonde profile. Meanwhile, the difference evaluation of integrated astronomical parameters also shows its relatively robust performance compared to a single model. The prowess of this reliable approach allows us to carry out regional investigation on optical turbulence features with routine meteorological data soon.
The refractive index structure constant near the ocean surface is an important parameter for studying atmospheric optical turbulence over the ocean. The measured refractive index structure constant and meteorological parameters, such as temperature and three-dimensional wind speed, near the sea surface on the South China Sea during the period from January to November 2020 were analyzed. On the basis of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, the dimensionless temperature structure parameter function near the sea surface was established, and a new parameterized model of the near-sea surface was proposed. The new model improved the error of the widely used model proposed by Wyngaard in 1973 (W73) and better reproduced the daily variation in the measured . Further analysis of the seasonal applicability of the new model indicated that the correlation coefficients between the estimated and measured in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter were 0.94, 0.94, 0.95, and 0.89, respectively, and the root mean square errors were 0.32, 0.41, 0.46, and 0.40 m−2/3, respectively. Compared with the estimated by the W73 model, the correlation coefficient of estimated by the new model and measured by the micro-thermometer increased by 0.05–0.27 and the root mean square error decreased by 0.04–0.56. The improved demonstrated higher accuracy than the existing models, which can lay a foundation for estimating turbulence parameters in different sea areas.
