The main objective of this research work was to study the accuracy of GNSS code receivers under poor sky visibility conditions based on measurements on three different objects (point, line, and surface) and additionally to test results on point positioning with good sky visibility conditions. The measurement was based on 3 smartphones (in the same mode to check repeatability) and 2 handheld receivers (working in GPS+GLONASS modes). The methodology was based on the RTK technique, whose coordinates were assumed as a reference. Based on the results, the significant influence of measuring in the vicinity of high trees on the obtained accuracy was observed for both the precise geodetic equipment and the tested code receivers. More favorable results of point positioning were observed when using mobile phones. On the other hand, in the case of measurement in motion, the handheld receivers guaranteed higher accuracy. Moreover, the study showed that handheld receivers might achieve a better accuracy than smartphones, and that position might be determined with a greater accuracy and reliability. Furthermore, handheld receivers were characterized by a smaller number of outliers.

Given the research work presents the results of GPS systems for dynamic precision estimation, using the real time kinematic (RTK) phase measurements of position with two receivers. Receiver's antennas have constant distance between them. The network of base stations EUPOS-Riga and LATPOS was used to correct errors. State estimation results are presented as well. The GPRS data exchange among correctional station and receivers was used. The results of precision estimation reveal that centimetre accuracy may be achieved using the fixed solution. Precision of state estimation (course and roll angles) depends on antennas base.

There is an urgent necessity for a highly accurate and reliable geoid model to enable prompt determination of normal height with the use of GNSS coordinate determination due to the high precision requirements in geodesy, building and high precision road construction development. Additionally, the Latvian height system is in the process of transition from BAS- 77 (Baltic Height System) to EVRS2007 system. The accuracy of the geoid model must approach the precision of about ~1 cm looking forward to the Baltic Rail and other big projects. The use of all the available and verified data sources is planned, including the use of enlarged set of GNSS/levelling data, gravimetric measurement data and, additionally, the vertical deflection measurements over the territory of Latvia. The work is going ahead stepwise. Just the issue of GNSS reference network stability is discussed. In order to achieve the ~1 cm precision geoid, it is required to have a homogeneous high precision GNSS network as a basis for ellipsoidal height determination for GNSS/levelling points. Both the LatPos and EUPOS® - Riga network have been examined in this article.

According to the decision of IAG Reference Frame Sub-commission for Europe (EUREF) the EVRF2007 solution as the vertical reference has to be deployed in EU countries. The new height system LAS-2000,5 had been enacted as the European Vertical Reference System’s EVRF2007 realization in Latvia and the new geoid model LV’14 had been introduced by Latvian authority Latvian Geospatial Information Agency. However, the appreciation of the quality of quasi-geoid model LV’14 is rather contradictious among the users in Latvia. The independent estimate and comparison of the two Latvian geoid models developed till now has been performed by the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics. Previous geoid model LV98 which was developed for Baltic-1977 height system almost 20 years ago is outdated now. Preparatory actions described in order to fulfil the task of comparison the geoids in two different height systems. The equations and transformation parameters are presented in this article for the normal height conversion from Baltic-1977 height system to the Latvian realization named LAS-2000,5. The comparison is performed of both Latvian quasigeoid models – the new one LV’14 and previous LV98. The quality of both models estimated by controlling the geoid heights at the properly densified GNSS/levelling network sites. The distribution of discrepancies in comparison with normal distribution N(x,µ,s) is depicted in corresponding figures. For LV’14 quasi-geoid model the standard deviation of discrepancies is 3.2 cm, 75% of discrepancies x ≤ 3.2 cm. For LV98 quasigeoid model the standard deviation of discrepancies is 4.7 cm, 80% of discrepancies x ≤ 6 cm. Without doubt, the newly developed LV’14 quasi-geoid model is of higher quality.

The aim of this study was to find out whether, just like in March 2015, daily regular GPS positioning disturbances caused by ionospheric scin tillations occurred in other months of the solar activity cycle 24. The GPS positioning 90-sec kinematic solutions of selected 46 month covering 11 years were used for search of regular daily scintillation events. The hypothesis on predictable regular daily ionospheric scintillation was tested. Discovered scintillation waves as a result of space weather impact with the siderial day regularity. It leads to conclusion of the radiation origin from the interplanetary media. The enhancement of radiation waves by solar activity is similar as it is for Pc1 waves. The regular daily ionospheric scintillation waves are recorded at any time of the day. In years of low solar activity in 2010 and 2012, regular scintillation waves were not found. It cannot be claimed that the comparison of daily regular ionospheric scintillation cases over time with the mentioned Pc1 wave cases indicates any interrelation.
