This paper reports the results of a study to investigate and develop correlations for the parameters affecting the time for complete solidification and fusion in spherical shells. For this study, four spherical shells of 35, 76, 106 and 131 mm diameter were used, the charging temperature was varied from −20°C to −5°C while the melting temperature varied from 10°C to 25°C. Water and mixtures of water and polyethylene glycol in percentages ranging from 7.5% to 50% were tested. The developed correlation for the time for complete solidification showed an agreement with experiments with maximum difference of about 5.91%. Validation of the correlation of the time for complete fusion showed maximum difference of 7.2% and minimum difference of 0.88% when compared with experimental results.

Many communities in the Brazilian Amazon region remain without reliable access to electricity due to geographical barriers and the high cost of connecting to the national grid. This study aims to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of implementing battery storage systems in an existing isolated solar–diesel microgrid located in Tunui-Cachoeira, in the district of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM). The analysis uses an energy balance methodology, implemented through the HOMER Pro simulation platform, to assess three scenarios: (i) without batteries, (ii) with lithium-ion batteries, and (iii) with lead–acid batteries. Technical and economic indicators such as net present cost (NPC), levelized cost of energy (LCOE), diesel consumption, and renewable fraction were compared. The results indicate that incorporating lead–acid batteries yields the lowest LCOE (1.99 R$/kWh) and the highest renewable fraction (96.8%). This demonstrates that adding energy storage systems significantly enhances the performance and cost-effectiveness of microgrids, offering a viable path to electrify remote and hard-to-reach communities in the Amazon.

Photovoltaic solar energy has emerged as a vital solution in energy transition, especially in buildings with building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. This study evaluated a BIPV system in João Pessoa, Brazil, using PVsyst 7.4 software for simulations in 2023 and experimental tests in 2024 to compare real and simulated energy values injected into the grid. The experiments were conducted in April, June, July, and August, covering seasonal variations. The east and west orientations showed the best performance, with annual production of 65.5 and 81.6 kWh, respectively, due to the balanced solar irradiance. Conversely, the north and south orientations generated less electricity, with 51.3 and 42.1 kWh, respectively, due to lower direct solar exposure. The average injected energy was 0.2445 to 0.2530 kWh/day in April, 0.2851 to 0.2470 kWh/day in June, 0.2816 to 0.2400 kWh/day in July, and 0.1556 to 0.1700 kWh/day in August. Performance ratios were 44.3% for the north, 44.4% for the south, 47.4% for the east, and 56.8% for the west, highlighting the impact of orientation. It is concluded that the east and west facades are more suitable for BIPV systems in João Pessoa, emphasizing the importance of local factors in optimizing urban energy efficiency.

This paper investigates technological pathways for the conversion of coal-fired power plants toward sustainable energy sources, using an integrated multi-criteria decision-making approach that combines Proknow-C, AHP, and PROMETHEE. Eight alternatives were identified: full conversion to natural gas, full conversion to biomass, coal and natural gas hybridization, coal and biomass hybridization, electricity and hydrogen cogeneration, coal and solar energy hybridization, post-combustion carbon capture systems, and decommissioning with subsequent reuse. The analysis combined bibliographic data (26 scientific articles and 13 patents) with surveys from 14 energy experts, using Total Decision version 1.2.1041.0 and Visual PROMETHEE version 1.1.0.0 software tools. Based on six criteria (environmental, structural, technical, technological, economic, and social), the most viable option was full conversion to natural gas (ϕ = +0.0368), followed by coal and natural gas hybridization (ϕ = +0.0257), and coal and solar hybridization (ϕ = +0.0124). These alternatives emerged as the most balanced in terms of emissions reduction, infrastructure reuse, and cost efficiency. In contrast, decommissioning (ϕ = −0.0578) and carbon capture systems (ϕ = −0.0196) were less favorable. This study proposes a structured framework for strategic energy planning that supports a just energy transition and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, highlighting the need for public policies that enhance the competitiveness and scalability of sustainable alternatives.
