Increasing land utilization, population aggregation and strong land–sea interaction make coastal areas an ecologically fragile environment. The construction of an ecological security pattern is important for maintaining the function of the coastal ecosystem. This paper takes Jiaodong Peninsula in China, a hilly coastal area, as an example for evaluating landscape ecological risk within a comprehensive framework of “nature–neighborhood–landscape”, based on spatial principal component analysis, and it constructs the ecological security pattern based on the minimum cumulative resistance model (MCR). The results showed that the overall level of ecological risk in the study area was medium. The connectivity between the areas of low landscape ecological risk was relatively low, and the high risk areas were concentrated in the north of the Peninsula. A total of 11 key ecological corridors of three types (water, green space and road corridors) and 105 potential corridors were constructed. According to the ecological network pattern, landscape ecological optimization suggestions were proposed: key corridors in the north and south of Jiaodong Peninsula should be connected; urban development should consider current ecological sources and corridors to prevent landscape fragmentation; and the ecological roles of potential corridors should be strengthened. This paper can provide a theoretical and practical basis for ecological planning and urban master planning in coastal areas in the future.

Regional soil loss assessment is the critical method of incorporating soil erosion into decision-making associated with land resources management and soil conservation planning. However, data availability has limited its application for mountainous areas. To obtain a clear understanding of soil erosion in Yunnan, a pixel-based estimation was employed to quantify soil erosion rate and the benefits of soil conservation measures based on Chinese Soil Loss Equation (CSLE) and data collected in the national soil erosion survey. Results showed that 38.77% of the land was being eroded at an erosion rate higher than the soil loss tolerance, the average soil erosion rate was found to be 12.46 t∙ha−1∙yr−1, resulting in a total soil loss of 0.47 Gt annually. Higher erosion rates mostly occurred in the downstream areas of the major rivers as compared to upstream areas, especially for the southwest agricultural regions. Rain-fed cropland suffered the most severe soil erosion, with a mean erosion rate of 47.69 t∙ha−1∙yr−1 and an erosion ratio of 64.24%. Lands with a permanent cover (forest, shrub, and grassland) were mostly characterized by erosion rates an order of magnitude lower than those from rain-fed cropland, except for erosion from sparse woods, which was noticeable and should not be underestimated. Soil loss from arable land, woodland and grassland accounted for 52.24%, 35.65% and 11.71% of the total soil loss, respectively. We also found significant regional differences in erosion rates and a close relationship between erosion and soil conservation measures adopted. The CSLE estimates did not compare well with qualitative estimates from the National Soil Erosion Database of China (NSED-C) and only 47.77% of the territory fell within the same erosion intensity for the two approaches. However, the CSLE estimates were consistent with the results from a national survey and local assessments under experimental plots. By advocating of soil conservation measures and converting slope cropland into grass/forest and terraced field, policy interventions during 2006–2010 have reduced soil erosion on rain-fed cropland by 20% in soil erosion rate and 32% in total soil loss compared to the local assessments. The quantitative CSLE method provides a reliable estimation, due to the consideration of erosion control measures and is potentially transferable to other mountainous areas as a robust approach for rapid assessment of sheet and rill erosion.

The continuous transformation from biodiverse natural forests and mixed-use farms into monoculture rubber plantations may lead to a series of hazards, such as natural forest habitats fragmentation, biodiversity loss, as well as drought and water shortage. Therefore, understanding the spatial distribution of rubber plantations is crucial to regional ecological security and a sustainable economy. However, the spectral characteristics of rubber tree is easily mixed with other vegetation such as natural forests, tea plantations, orchards and shrubs, which brings difficulty and uncertainty to regional scale identification. In this paper, we proposed a classification method combines multi-source phenology characteristics and random forest algorithm. On the basis of optimization of input samples and features, phenological spectrum, brightness, greenness, wetness, fractional vegetation cover, topography and other features of rubber were extracted. Five classification schemes were constructed for comparison, and the one with the highest classification accuracy was used to identify the spatial pattern of rubber plantations in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 in Xishuangbanna. The results show that: (1) the identification results are in consistent with field survey and rubber plantations area generally shows a first increasing and then decreasing trend; (2) the Overall Accuracy (OA) and Kappa coefficient of the proposed method are 90.0% and 0.86, respectively, with a Producer’s Accuracy (PA) and User’s Accuracy (UA) of 95.2% and 88.8%, respectively; (3) cross-validation was employed to analyze the accuracy evaluation indexes of the identification results: both PA and UA of the rubber plantations stay stable over 85%, with the minimum fluctuation and best stability of UA value. The OA value and Kappa coefficient were stable in the range of 0.88–0.90 and 0.84–0.86, respectively. The method proposed provides reliable results on spatial distribution of rubber, and is potentially transferable to other mountainous areas as a robust approach for rapid monitoring of rubber plantations.

The quantitative retrieval of the chlorophyll-a concentration is an important remote sensing method that is used to monitor the nutritional status of water bodies. The high spatial resolution of the Sentinel-2 MSI and its subdivision in the red-edge band highlight the characteristics of water chlorophyll-a, which is an important detection tool for assessing water quality parameters in plateau lakes. In this study, the Nine Plateau Lakes in the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau of China were selected as the study area. Using Sentinel-2 MSI transit images and in situ measured chlorophyll-a concentration as the data source, the chlorophyll-a concentrations of plateau lakes (CCAPLs) were investigated, and the surface temperatures of plateau lakes (STPLs) were retrieved to verify the hypothesis that the lake surface temperature could increase the chlorophyll-a concentration. By comparing feature importance using a random forest (RF), the Sentinel-2 MSI surface reflectance and in situ data were linearly fitted using four retrieval spectral indices with high feature importance, and the accuracy of the estimated concentration of chlorophyll-a was evaluated by monitoring station data in the same period. Then, Landsat-8 TIRS Band 10 data were used to retrieve the STPL with a single-channel temperature retrieval algorithm and to verify the correlation between the STPL and the CCAPL. The results showed that the retrievals of the CCAPL and the STPL were consistent with the actual situation. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the fifteenth normalized difference chlorophyll-a index (NDCI15) was 0.0249. When the CCAPL was greater than 0.05 mg/L and the STPL was within 28–34 °C, there was a positive linear correlation between the CCAPL and the STPL. These results will provide support for the remote sensing monitoring of eutrophication in plateau lakes and will contribute to the scientific and effective management of plateau lakes.

The mapping and dynamic monitoring of large-scale cropland erosion rates are critical for agricultural planning but extremely challenging. In this study, using field investigation data collected from 20,155 land parcels in 2817 sample units in the National Soil Erosion Survey, as well as land use change data for two decades from the National Land Use/Cover Database of China (NLUD-C), we proposed a new point-to-surface approach to quantitatively assess long-term cropland erosion based on the CSLE model and non-homologous data voting. The results show that cropland in Yunnan suffers from serious problems, with an unsustainable mean soil erosion rate of 40.47 t/(ha·a) and an erosion ratio of 70.11%, which are significantly higher than those of other land types. Engineering control measures (ECMS) have a profound impact on reducing soil erosion; the soil erosion rates of cropland with and without ECMs differ more than five-fold. Over the past two decades, the cropland area in Yunnan has continued to decrease, with a net reduction of 7461.83 km2 and a ratio of −10.55%, causing a corresponding 0.32 × 108 t (12.12%) reduction in cropland soil loss. We also quantified the impact of different LUCC scenarios on cropland erosion, and extraordinarily high variability was found in soil loss in different basins and periods. Conversion from cropland to forest contributes the most to cropland erosion reduction, while conversion from grassland to cropland contributes 56.18% of the increase in soil erosion. Considering the current speed of cropland regulation, it is the sharp reduction in land area that leads to cropland erosion reduction rather than treatments. The choice between the Grain for Green Policy and Cropland Protecting Strategy in mountainous areas should be made carefully, with understanding and collaboration between different roles.
