Designing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems that can automatically detect ocular diseases (ODs) has become an active research field in the health domain. Although the human eye might have more than one OD simultaneously, most existing systems are designed to detect specific eye diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new CAD systems that can detect multiple ODs simultaneously. This paper presents a novel multi-label convolutional neural network (ML-CNN) system based on ML classification (MLC) to diagnose various ODs from color fundus images. The proposed ML-CNN-based system consists of three main phases: the preprocessing phase, which includes normalization and augmentation using several transformation processes, the modeling phase, and the prediction phase. The proposed ML-CNN consists of three convolution (CONV) layers and one max pooling (MP) layer. Then, two CONV layers are performed, followed by one MP and dropout (DO). After that, one flatten layer is performed, followed by one fully connected (FC) layer. We added another DO once again, and finally, one FC layer with 45 nodes is performed. The system outputs the probabilities of all 45 diseases in each image. We validated the model by using cross-validation (CV) and measured the performance by five different metrics: accuracy (ACC), recall, precision, Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), and area under the curve (AUC). The results are 94.3%, 80%, 91.5%, 99%, and 96.7%, respectively. The comparisons with the existing built-in models, such as MobileNetV2, DenseNet201, SeResNext50, InceptionV3, and InceptionresNetv2, demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ML-CNN model.

The immune system’s overproduction of white blood cells (WBCs) results in the most common blood cancer, leukemia. It accounts for about 25% of childhood cancers and is one of the primary causes of death worldwide. The most well-known type of leukemia found in the human bone marrow is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). It is a disease that affects the bone marrow and kills white blood cells. Better treatment and a higher likelihood of survival can be helped by early and precise cancer detection. As a result, doctors can use computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) models to detect early leukemia effectively. In this research, we proposed a classification model based on the EfficientNet-B3 convolutional neural network (CNN) model to distinguish ALL as an automated model that automatically changes the learning rate (LR). We set up a custom LR that compared the loss value and training accuracy at the beginning of each epoch. We evaluated the proposed model on the C-NMC_Leukemia dataset. The dataset was pre-processed with normalization and balancing. The proposed model was evaluated and compared with recent classifiers. The proposed model’s average precision, recall, specificity, accuracy, and Disc similarity coefficient (DSC) were 98.29%, 97.83%, 97.82%, 98.31%, and 98.05%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed model was used to examine microscopic images of the blood to identify the malaria parasite. Our proposed model’s average precision, recall, specificity, accuracy, and DSC were 97.69%, 97.68%, 97.67%, 97.68%, and 97.68%, respectively. Therefore, the evaluation of the proposed model showed that it is an unrivaled perceptive outcome with tuning as opposed to other ongoing existing models.

A cerebral stroke is a medical problem that occurs when the blood flowing to a section of the brain is suddenly cut off, causing damage to the brain. Brain cells gradually die because of interruptions in blood supply and other nutrients to the brain, resulting in disabilities, depending on the affected region. Early recognition and detection of symptoms can aid in the rapid treatment of strokes and result in better health by reducing the severity of a stroke episode. In this paper, the Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and light gradient-boosting machine (LightGBM) were used as machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting the likelihood of a cerebral stroke by applying an open-access stroke prediction dataset. The stroke prediction dataset was pre-processed by handling missing values using the KNN imputer technique, eliminating outliers, applying the one-hot encoding method, and normalizing the features with different ranges of values. After data splitting, synthetic minority oversampling (SMO) was applied to balance the stroke samples and no-stroke classes. Furthermore, to fine-tune the hyper-parameters of the ML algorithm, we employed a random search technique that could achieve the best parameter values. After applying the tuning process, we stacked the parameters to a tuning ensemble RXLM that was analyzed and compared with traditional classifiers. The performance metrics after tuning the hyper-parameters achieved promising results with all ML algorithms.

Background: In recent years, the healthcare field has experienced significant advancements. New diagnostic techniques, treatments, and insights into the causes of various diseases have emerged. Despite these progressions, cancer remains a major concern. It is a widespread illness affecting individuals of all ages and leads to one out of every six deaths. Lung and colon cancer alone account for nearly two million fatalities. Though it is rare for lung and colon cancers to co-occur, the spread of cancer cells between these two areas—known as metastasis—is notably high. Early detection of cancer greatly increases survival rates. Currently, histopathological image (HI) diagnosis and appropriate treatment are key methods for reducing cancer mortality and enhancing survival rates. Digital image processing (DIP) and deep learning (DL) algorithms can be employed to analyze the HIs of five different types of lung and colon tissues. Methods: Therefore, this paper proposes a refined DL model that integrates feature fusion for the multi-classification of lung and colon cancers. The proposed model incorporates three DL architectures: ResNet-101V2, NASNetMobile, and EfficientNet-B0. Each model has limitations concerning variations in the shape and texture of input images. To address this, the proposed model utilizes a concatenate layer to merge the pre-trained individual feature vectors from ResNet-101V2, NASNetMobile, and EfficientNet-B0 into a single feature vector, which is then fine-tuned. As a result, the proposed DL model achieves high success in multi-classification by leveraging the strengths of all three models to enhance overall accuracy. This model aims to assist pathologists in the early detection of lung and colon cancer with reduced effort, time, and cost. The proposed DL model was evaluated using the LC25000 dataset, which contains colon and lung HIs. The dataset was pre-processed using resizing and normalization techniques. Results: The model was tested and compared with recent DL models, achieving impressive results: 99.8% for precision, 99.8% for recall, 99.8% for F1-score, 99.96% for specificity, and 99.94% for accuracy. Conclusions: Thus, the proposed DL model demonstrates exceptional performance across all classification categories.

Peptic ulcers and stomach cancer are common conditions that impact the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has emerged as a widely used, noninvasive technique for diagnosing these issues, providing valuable insights through the detailed imaging of the GI tract. Therefore, an early and accurate diagnosis of GI diseases is crucial for effective treatment. This paper introduces the Intelligent Learning Rate Controller (ILRC) mechanism that optimizes the training of deep learning (DL) models by adaptively adjusting the learning rate (LR) based on training progress. This helps improve convergence speed and reduce the risk of overfitting. The ILRC was applied to four DL models: EfficientNet-B0, ResNet101v2, InceptionV3, and InceptionResNetV2. These models were further enhanced using transfer learning, freezing layers, fine-tuning techniques, residual learning, and modern regularization methods. The models were evaluated on two datasets, the Kvasir-Capsule and KVASIR v2 datasets, which contain WCE images. The results demonstrated that the models, particularly when using ILRC, outperformed existing state-of-the-art methods in accuracy. On the Kvasir-Capsule dataset, the models achieved accuracies of up to 99.906%, and on the Kvasir-v2 dataset, they achieved up to 98.062%. This combination of techniques offers a robust solution for automating the detection of GI abnormalities in WCE images, significantly enhancing diagnostic efficiency and accuracy in clinical settings.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, leading to distinctive patterns of neuronal dysfunction and the cognitive decline emblematic of dementia. Currently, over 5 million individuals aged 65 and above are living with AD in the United States, a number projected to rise by 2050. Traditional diagnostic methods are fraught with challenges, including low accuracy and a significant propensity for misdiagnosis. In response to these diagnostic challenges, our study develops and evaluates an innovative deep learning (DL) ensemble model that integrates features from three pre-trained models—VGG16, MobileNet, and InceptionResNetV2—for the precise identification of AD markers from MRI scans. This approach aims to overcome the limitations of individual models in handling varying image shapes and textures, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy. The ultimate goal is to support primary radiologists by streamlining the diagnostic process, facilitating early detection, and enabling timely treatment of AD. Upon rigorous evaluation, our ensemble model demonstrated superior performance over contemporary classifiers, achieving a notable accuracy of 97.93%, along with a specificity of 98.04%, sensitivity of 95.89%, precision of 95.94%, and an F1-score of 87.50%. These results not only underscore the efficacy of the ensemble approach but also highlight the potential for DL to revolutionize AD diagnosis, offering a promising pathway to more accurate, early detection and intervention.
