The objective of this study was to use colorimetry and visible spectroscopy to discriminate wood species obtained from the Amazon floodplain, in addition to determining the basic density and relating it to the wood colorimetric parameters. The studied material was from a community forest management area in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. For colorimetric and visible spectrum analyses, data were obtained randomly in the transverse anatomical surface. The spectral behavior of the wood samples in the visible region was evaluated. In the statistical analyses, comparisons of colorimetric parameters and visible spectra of wood from floodplain tree species were carried out. Furthermore, the basic density of the wood was determined. The best differentiation of species was achieved mainly by the hue angle. The species Pseudobombax munguba (Mart.) Dugand presented the highest median for the coordinate of the red-green axis, and the medians of the species P. munguba and Hevea spruceana (Benth.) Müll.Arg. obtained higher values of the blue-yellow axis coordinate and saturation. All species evaluated were classified as light and having low-density wood. Thus, it can be concluded that the colorimetric technique has potential to distinguish Amazon floodplain forest species.
Dynamics of Lecythidaceae species were evaluated 13 years after logging in a dense tropical rain forest located in the municipality of Moju, Pará (02º 08’ 14’’ and 02º 12’ 26” S; 48º 47’ 34”S and 48º 48’ 14” W - SAD 69). Two hundred ha out of a 1,050 ha forest area were selectively logged for timber (23 m3 ha-1 harvested from 25 species) in 1997. Twenty-two permanent sample plots of 0.5 ha (11 ha sample area) were established and all trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured and identified in 1995, 1998 and 2010. Density (trees ha-1) and basal area (m2 ha-1) of the species were evaluated in the three occasions. The opening of canopy caused by logging reduced the density and basal area of five species, but produced a positive response in nine species, boosting their natural regeneration and allowing the ingrowth of one species that was not present in the studied area in the beginning.
The modeling of recruitment in tropical forests is important for studies of forest management sustainability, for giving adequate subsidies to the recovery of wood stock. The objective of the work was to estimate the recruitment after wood harvest, using a model of artificial neural network (ANN). The study area is located in the Tapajós National Forest (55° 00' W, 2° 45' S), Pará. In 64 ha of the study area, in 1979, an intensive harvest of 72.5 m3 ha-1 was carried out. In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50 m x 50 m were randomly installed. These plots were measured in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. To model the recruitment the variables of target subplot and its neighborhood were considered. The estimates obtained in the training and generalization of ANN were evaluated by statistics: correlation ( R) and root mean square error (RMSE) being obtained RMSE 35.6% and 0.89. It was possible to model the recruitment tendency over the time in tropical forests, after the wood harvest.
