Deep learning models are essential tools for mid- to long-term runoff prediction. However, the influence of the input time lag and output lead time on the prediction results in deep learning models has been less studied. Based on 290 schemas, this study specified different time lags by sliding windows and predicted the runoff process by RNN (Recurrent Neural Network), LSTM (Long–short-term Memory), and GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit) models at five hydrological stations in the upper Yangtze River during 1980–2018 at daily, ten-day, and monthly scales. Different models have different optimal time lags; therefore, multiple time lags were analyzed in this paper to find out the relationship between the time intervals and the accuracy of different river runoff predictions. The results show that the optimal time-lag settings for the RNN, LSTM, and GRU models in the daily, ten-day, and monthly scales were 7 days, 24 ten days, 27 ten days, 24 ten days, 24 months, 27 months, and 21 months, respectively. Furthermore, with the increase of time lags, the simulation accuracy would stabilize after a specific time lag at multiple time scales of runoff prediction. Increased lead time was linearly related to decreased NSE at daily and ten-day runoff prediction. However, there was no significant linear relationship between NSE and lead time at monthly runoff prediction. Choosing the smallest lead time could have the best prediction results at different time scales. Further, the RMSE of the three models revealed that RNN was inferior to LSTM and GRU in runoff prediction. In addition, RNN, LSTM, and GRU models could not accurately predict extreme runoff events at different time scales. This study highlights the influence of time-lag setting and lead-time selection in the mid- to long-term runoff prediction results for the upper Yangtze River basin. It is recommended that researchers should evaluate the effect of time lag before using deep learning models for runoff prediction, and to obtain the best prediction, the shortest lead-time length can be chosen as the best output for different time scales.

Accurate monthly runoff prediction is significant to extreme flood control and water resources management. However, traditional statistical models without multi-variable input may fail to capture runoff changes effectively due to the dual effect of climate change and human activities. Here, we used five multi-input machine learning (ML) models to predict monthly runoff, where multiple global circulation indexes and surface meteorological indexes were selected as explanatory variables by the stepwise regression or copula entropy methods. Moreover, four univariate models were adopted as benchmarks. The multi-input ML models were tested at two typical hydrological stations (i.e., Gaochang and Cuntan) in the Upper Yangtze River. The results indicate that the LSTM_Copula (long short-term memory model combined with copula entropy method) model outperformed other models in both hydrological stations, while the GRU_Step (gate recurrent unit model combined with stepwise regression method) model and the RF_Copula (random forest model combined with copula entropy method) model also showed satisfactory performances. In addition, the ML models with multi-variable input provided better predictability compared with four univariate statistical models, and the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error), RMSE (root mean square error), NSE (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient), and R (Pearson’s correlation coefficient) values were improved by 5.10, 4.16, 5.34, and 0.43% for the Gaochang Station, and 10.84, 17.28, 13.68, and 3.55% for the Cuntan Station, suggesting the proposed ML approaches are practically applicable to monthly runoff forecasting in large rivers.

Hydropower units are essential to the safe, stable, and efficient operation of modern power systems, particularly given the current expansion of renewable energy systems. To enable timely monitoring of unit performance, it is critical to investigate the trends in vibration signals, to enhance the accuracy and reliability of vibration trend prediction models. This paper proposes a fusion model for the vibration signal trend prediction of hydropower units based on the waveform extension method empirical mode decomposition (W-EMD) and long short-term memory neural network (LSTMNN). The fusion model first employed a waveform matching extension method based on parameter ergodic optimization to extend the original signal. Secondly, EMD was used to decompose the extended signal sequence and reconstruct the decomposition components by the extreme point division method, and the reconstructed high- and low-frequency components were used as LSTMNN inputs for component prediction. Finally, the component prediction results were superimposed with equal weights to obtain the predicted value of the vibration signal trend of the hydropower unit. The experimental results showed that the W-EMD signal decomposition method can effectively suppress the endpoint effect problem in the traditional EMD algorithm, improving the quality of EMD decomposition. Furthermore, through a case study of the upper guide X direction swing signal on the 16F unit of a domestic hydropower station, it was found that the proposed fusion model successfully predicted anomalies in the unit’s swing signals; compared with SVR, KELM, LSTMNN, and EMD + LSTMNN, the prediction accuracy was improved by 78.94%, 66.67%, 55.56%, and 42.86%, respectively.

In mountainous canyon regions, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS)/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers are susceptible to multireflection and tropospheric factors, which frequently reduce the accuracy in monitoring vertical deformation monitoring under short-baseline methods. This limitation hinders the application of BDS/GNSS in high-precision monitoring scenarios in those cases. To address this issue, this study proposes a three-dimensional (3D) deformation measurement method that integrates BDS/GNSS positioning with dihedral corner reflectors (CRs). By incorporating high-precision horizontal positioning results obtained from BDS/GNSS into the radar line-of-sight (LOS) correction process and utilizing ascending and descending Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for joint monitoring, the method achieves millimeter-level- accuracy in measuring vertical deformation at corner reflector sites. At the same time, it enhances the 3D positioning accuracy of BDS/GNSS to the 1 mm level under short-baseline configurations. Based on monitoring stations deployed at the Jinsha River dam site, the proposed deformation fusion monitoring method was validated using high-resolution SAR imagery from Germany’s TerraSAR-X (TSX) satellite. Simulated horizontal and vertical displacements were introduced at the stations. The results demonstrate that BDS/GNSS achieves better than 1 mm horizontal monitoring accuracy and a vertical accuracy of around 5 mm. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) CRs achieve approximately 2 mm in horizontal accuracy and 1 mm in vertical accuracy. The integrated method yields a 3D deformation monitoring accuracy better than 1 mm. This paper’s results show high potential for achieving high-precision deformation observations by fusing BDS/GNSS and dihedral CRs, offering promising prospects for deformation monitoring in reservoir canyon regions.

Accurate flood simulation in regulated, low-lying river basins is crucial for forecasting and risk mitigation, but performance depends strongly on whether models represent floodplain hydrodynamics and human regulation. This study evaluates three coupled hydrological–hydrodynamic schemes in the Huai River Basin upstream of Bengbu Station using identical meteorological forcing and VIC-generated runoff: (I) a linear routing scheme (VIC–Routing), (II) a natural hydrodynamic scheme (VIC–CaMa-Flood), and (III) an extended hydrodynamic scheme that incorporates reservoir regulation and levee effects (VIC–CaMa-Flood with Dam). Results reveal clear spatial differences in scheme suitability. The linear routing scheme performs best in upstream reaches, with NSE and KGE generally exceeding 0.81, but tends to overestimate peak discharge in downstream lowland sections. Incorporating hydrodynamic processes and regulation representation further reduces peak flow bias. Scheme III achieves the most consistent downstream improvement, particularly for high flows (>2000 m3/s), with NSE exceeding 0.80 in long-term simulations and improved agreement with satellite-driven inundation patterns. However, simplified reservoir operating rules can increase uncertainty in water level dynamics. During the 2020 plum rain flood, Scheme II yielded more accurate water levels in some reaches, suggesting that generalized operation rules may introduce compensating errors even when discharge accuracy improves. Overall, reliable flood simulation in well-managed basins requires an explicit representation of both floodplain hydrodynamics and regulation, and scheme selection should be guided by the dominant controls along the river network.

Taking a large single-phase generator transformer product as the research object, this paper applied the finite element simulation method to analyze the vibration characteristics of its core. Firstly, through the analysis of vibration theory, the vibration laws and characteristics of the core are clarified, and a three-dimensional equivalent model of the transformer is constructed. The B-H curve of the silicon steel sheet is measured through experiments and used for the assignment of the core material when calculating the electromagnetic field later. Then, based on the simulation calculation of multi-physical field coupling, the no-load current on the primary side, the distribution and variation characteristics of the magnetic field inside the core are solved and analyzed. On this basis, the sequential coupling method was adopted to solve the displacement distribution of the core vibration and the displacement changes at different position points and conduct a comparative analysis. Subsequently, the accuracy of the simulation calculation method was verified through the test of a small prototype. Finally, based on the comparison of the dry and wet modal simulation results, the impact of transformer oil on the vibration characteristics of the core was evaluated and analyzed. It can be seen from the analysis that the core vibration is generally more intense at the upper part and corners; the impact of the internal oil flow on the vibration of the body of large transformers is relatively complex and thus cannot be ignored.
