Software defect prediction approaches play an essential role in the software development life cycle to help developers predict defects early, thus, preventing wasted time and effort. Defect prediction techniques based on semantic features have recently gained success over approaches based on traditional features. Existing semantic features-based defect prediction approaches use a single source code representation. Most studies focus on contextual syntax represented by abstract syntax trees, and some studies use a control flow graph to represent code graphs. However, a single representation is still limited for predicting defects that call multiple functions and have a high probability of false positives. To close the gap between source code representations on software defect prediction, we propose a defect prediction model based on multiple source code representations. The proposed model is a deep hierarchical convolutional neural network (DH-CNN). The syntax features extracted from abstract syntax trees using Word2vec are fed into syntax-level DH-CNN, and the semantic-graph features extracted from the control flow graph and data dependence graph using Node2vec are fed into semantic-level DH-CNN. In addition, the proposed model includes a gated merging mechanism that combines DH-CNN outputs to estimate the combination ratio of both types of features. Experimental results indicate that DH-CNN outperforms existing methods under cross-project and within-project scenarios.

Software defect prediction aims to find a reliable method for predicting defects in a particular software project and assisting software engineers in allocating limited resources to release high-quality software products. While most earlier research has concentrated on employing traditional features, current methodologies are increasingly directed toward extracting semantic features from source code. Traditional features often fall short in identifying semantic differences within programs, differences that are essential for the development of reliable and effective prediction models. In contrast, semantic features cannot present statistical metrics about the source code, such as the code size and complexity. Thus, using only one kind of feature negatively affects prediction performance. To bridge the gap between the traditional and semantic features, we propose a novel defect prediction model that integrates traditional and semantic features using a hybrid deep learning approach to address this limitation. Specifically, our model employs a hybrid CNN-MLP classifier: the convolutional neural network (CNN) processes semantic features extracted from projects’ abstract syntax trees (ASTs) using Word2vec. In contrast, the traditional features extracted from the dataset repository are processed by a multilayer perceptron (MLP). Outputs of CNN and MLP are then integrated and fed into a fully connected layer for defect prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted on various open-source projects to validate CNN-MLP’s effectiveness. Experimental results indicate that CNN-MLP can significantly enhance defect prediction performance. Furthermore, CNN-MLP’s improvements outperform existing methods in non-effort-aware and effort-aware cases.

Software defect prediction (SDP) methodology could enhance software’s reliability through predicting any suspicious defects in its source code. However, developing defect prediction models is a difficult task, as has been demonstrated recently. Several research techniques have been proposed over time to predict source code defects. However, most of the previous studies focus on conventional feature extraction and modeling. Such traditional methodologies often fail to find the contextual information of the source code files, which is necessary for building reliable prediction deep learning models. Alternatively, the semantic feature strategies of defect prediction have recently evolved and developed. Such strategies could automatically extract the contextual information from the source code files and use them to directly predict the suspicious defects. In this study, a comprehensive survey is conducted to systematically show recent software defect prediction techniques based on the source code’s key features. The most recent studies on this topic are critically reviewed through analyzing the semantic feature methods based on the source codes, the domain’s critical problems and challenges are described, and the recent and current progress in this domain are discussed. Such a comprehensive survey could enable research communities to identify the current challenges and future research directions. An in-depth literature review of 283 articles on software defect prediction and related work was performed, of which 90 are referenced.

Introduction: Tracking the hidden states of dynamic systems is a fundamental task in signal processing. Recursive Kalman Filters (KF) are widely regarded as an efficient solution for linear and Gaussian systems, offering low computational complexity. However, real-world applications often involve non-linear dynamics, making it challenging for traditional Kalman Filters to achieve accurate state estimation. Additionally, the accurate modeling of system dynamics and noise in practical scenarios is often difficult. To address these limitations, we propose the KalmanFormer, a hybrid model-driven and data-driven state estimator. By leveraging data, the KalmanFormer promotes the performance of state estimation under non-linear conditions and partial information scenarios. Methods: The proposed KalmanFormer integrates classical Kalman Filter with a Transformer framework. Specifically, it utilizes the Transformer to learn the Kalman Gain directly from data without requiring prior knowledge of noise parameters. The learned Kalman Gain is then incorporated into the standard Kalman Filter workflow, enabling the system to better handle non-linearities and model mismatches. The hybrid approach combines the strengths of data-driven learning and model-driven methodologies to achieve robust state estimation. Results and discussion: To evaluate the effectiveness of KalmanFormer, we conducted numerical experiments in both synthetic and real-world dataset. The results demonstrate that KalmanFormer outperforms the classical Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in the same settings. It achieves superior accuracy in tracking hidden states, demonstrating resilience to non-linearities and imprecise system models.

This paper proposes a novel infrared-inertial navigation method for the precise landing of commercial aircraft in low visibility and Global Position System (GPS)-denied environments. Within a Square-root Unscented Kalman Filter (SR_UKF), inertial measurement unit (IMU) data, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) images and airport geo-information are integrated to estimate the position, velocity and attitude of the aircraft during landing. Homography between the synthetic image and the real image which implicates the camera pose deviations is created as vision measurement. To accurately extract real runway features, the current results of runway detection are used as the prior knowledge for the next frame detection. To avoid possible homography decomposition solutions, it is directly converted to a vector and fed to the SR_UKF. Moreover, the proposed navigation system is proven to be observable by nonlinear observability analysis. Last but not least, a general aircraft was elaborately equipped with vision and inertial sensors to collect flight data for algorithm verification. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method could be used for the precise landing of commercial aircraft in low visibility and GPS-denied environments.

The integrated modular avionics (IMA) system is widely used in all classes of aircraft as a result of its high functional integration and resource utilization in developing advanced avionics systems. However, a series of challenges related to safety assessment exist in the background of the logical architecture for multi-message interactions of the IMA system. Traditional safety assessment methods are mainly based on engineering experience, and are difficult to reuse, incomplete, and even error-prone. Here we propose a method to assess the availability of the IMA system based on the thinking of model-based safety analysis. To aid the proposed method, we implement a tool to generate a AltaRica 3.0 file used to assess the IMA system model. The simulation results show that the proposed method makes the availability assessment fast, efficient, and effective. Moreover, we apply this method to the modification analysis of the IMA system under the condition of satisfying the safety requirement. Our study can enhance the safety assessment of safety-critical systems effectively, assist the design of IMA systems, and reduce the amount of errors during the programming process of the safety model.
