Important land surfaces from hill and mountain areas from the northern hemisphere formerly used for cropping were abandoned. Often, the abandoned land evolved by natural succession to grassland, shrubland or even to forest. The main goal of this paper is to bring new datasets necessary for the understanding of the evolution of ex-arable grassland vegetation from the forest steppe area into relationship with climate. The researches were performed in the locality of Grădinari (Caraş-Severin County, Western Romania) on an ex-arable plot abandoned since 1995. The vegetation data were collected for 19 years (time interval 2003–2021). The analyzed vegetation features were floristic composition, biodiversity and pastoral value. The climate data considered were air temperature and rainfall amount. The vegetation and climate data were correlated statistically, with a view to highlighting the potential impact of the temperature and rainfalls during the evolution of succession process on the grassland’s floristic composition, biodiversity and pastoral value. The pressure of the increased temperatures on the natural restoration process of the biodiversity and pastoral value of ex-arable forest steppe grassland could, at least partially, be mitigated by random grazing and mulching works.

The soil, regarded as a natural resource, but also as a determinant element of the living standards of rural communities, manly agricultural, may be influenced, directly and indirectly, by the modality of land organizing and use. Starting from this consideration, through this study, the spatial and temporal evolution of land use is being pursued, particularly that of forest areas and wooded grasslands. The goal is to notice the changes that have occurred over a 30-year period and the manner how these changes are reflected on the soil features. The researches presented in this paper have been taking place in the north-eastern hilly area of Timiş County, that area having entirely a rural character. For realizing this study satellite images, topographical and cadastral maps, from different time periods, national and international databases, data from specialty literature were used. To all these we should add direct observations in the field, topographic surveys and information collected from local authorities. The processing of cartographic materials and data and scientific information has been realized with Geographical Information Systems specific applications. The obtained result has been expressed in the form of thematic maps, in graphic form or as statistical analysis. At the level of the analyzed area, the obvious changes in the land use, registered over time, are caused by a number of factors, such as: the organization form, from communist to capitalist policies, leaving agricultural land as fallow ground, reduction in livestock, changing land use etc. All these changes have caused the extension of the wooded grasslands, reduction of arable land, installing inferior forest vegetation in qualitative and quantitative terms etc. As a result, the soil, one of the most important natural resources, is degraded qualitatively, underexploited, and on the other hand, its role as a direct and indirect food producer for local communities is significantly reduced.

The study explores the impact of floods, phenomena amplified by climate change and human activities, on the natural and anthropogenic environment, focusing on the analysis of a section of the Cigher River in the Crișul Alb basin in western Romania. The research aims to identify areas vulnerable to flooding under different discharge scenarios, assess the impact on agricultural lands, and propose a reproducible methodology based on the integration of GIS technologies, hydraulic modeling in HEC-RAS, and the use of LiDAR data. The methodology includes hydrological analysis, processing of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), delineation of geometries, hydraulic simulation for four discharge scenarios (S1–S4), and evaluation of the flood impact on agricultural and non-agricultural lands. Evaluated parameters, such as water velocity and flow section areas, highlighted an increased flood risk under maximum discharge conditions. The results show that scenario S4, with a discharge of 60 m3/s, causes extensive flooding, affecting 871 hectares of land with various uses. The conclusions emphasize the importance of using modern technologies for risk management, protecting vulnerable areas, and reducing economic and ecological losses. The proposed methodology is also applicable to other river basins, representing a useful model for developing sustainable strategies for flood prevention and management.

The landscapes and, implicitly, the surfaces of secondary grasslands in the mountain areas have been intensively modified and transformed by humans. In this context, this paper analyses the spatial and temporal changes of grassland surfaces following the impact of human population reduction. Thus, the study proposes the implementation of the Grassland Anthropic Impact Index (GAII) as a “measurement tool” to functionally link the two components, grassland surface and human population. The spatiotemporal analyses are based on Corine Land Cover data and demographic data, processed via Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methods and the Land Change Modeler (LCM) tool. The research shows that over a period of 28 years, the population, which was continuously decreasing, caused a series of transformations to the grasslands over an area of 33343 ha. The influence of the reduction in the number of inhabitants was also demonstrated by the direction of the changes produced in the grassland surfaces: in the better populated areas, the grasslands expanded over lands with other uses, and in the sparsely populated areas, they were abandoned. GAII values generally increase with the decrease of the population in the target area, meaning that for an inhabitant (potential user) a greater grassland surface is reported, resulting in a greater responsibility for the management of this resource on a space and time scale. Following the evaluation of the trend of the last 28 years, it was observed that the depopulation of mountain areas can be seen as a threat to grassland ecosystems, either through the transition to other categories of use, or through abandonment. The implications of these phenomena are much broader: they produce chain reactions and affect other components of the regional geosystem.

Data from the specialized literature show that in the last decade there has been a rapid development in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for obtaining spatial information from the pastoral environment. The idea of investigating grassland surfaces with the help of drones was based on the following practical considerations: the size and complexity of pastoral space and the need for data acquisition in hard-to-reach areas and in a short time. In this context, the purpose of the research is to integrate UAV technology and GIS applications into pratological research, the results obtained having both practical and methodological character. For the efficient research of the pastoral space with UAV equipment, a working model was developed, complex from a technical point of view, consisting of several stages: identifying the areas of interest, planning and setting the flight parameters, "photographing" the area, downloading and image processing, and then processing the results in the GIS environment. From each stage, geospatial products can be extracted, and the final products can be used in various ways, both in the pastoral space and in other segments of the geographical environment. Following the application of the working algorithm results the orthophotoplan and the point clouds, from which can be extracted topo-cadastral information (related to the "physical" surface of grasslands), pratological information (related to vegetation and mode of use) or useful information in territorial planning (risk phenomena, relief aspects), with high precision and spatial location. Compared with the classical research methods, the use of the working model based on geomatic technologies, has the effect of reducing the working time and the number of operators, the possibility of tracking time and space of the investigated territory, but also the formation of graphic and descriptive databases that they can be used in other subsequent projects.
