The main reasons and ways of bitumen modification by polymers were examined. Positive and negative aspects of the usage of different polymer modifiers (elastomers, thermoplastic elastomers, reactive polymers, thermoplastics) were analysed. The authors’ achievements concerning modification of bitumen by various polymers, namely indene-coumarone, petroleum, phenol-formaldehyde and epoxy resins, were described.

In this study, the phenol-cresol-formaldehyde (PhCR-F) resin was synthesised from the phenolic fraction of coal tar resin and formaldehyde through polycondensation. The physico-mechanical properties of the asphalt concrete were subsequently characterised to examine its water saturation, coefficient of long-term water-resistance (after 15 and 30 days), and compressive strength (at 20°C and 50°C). The results revealed that the addition of PhCR-F markedly increased the adhesion index with the surface of granite aggregates and glass before and after heating the bitumen. Furthermore, the PhCR-F addition enhanced the bitumen softening point, long-term water resistance, and thermo-stability but decreased the water-saturation index along with the penetration and ductility of bitumen. In conclusion, the study findings revealed that the synthesised PhCR-F resin is a promising adhesion promoter in pavement grade oil bitumen for application with asphalt concrete.

The use of charcoal (CC) for various industries was analysed; the modern ideas about the factors influencing the process of obtaining CC were considered. The effect of raw materials nature (wood or agricultural wastes) and their characteristics (size, physical properties, chemical composition), as well as carbonization temperature, heating rate, oxygen level and pressure on the yield and quality of CC was described. The existing technologies for charcoal production were analyzed; they were classified according to the type of heating initiation and temperature maintenance during the carbonization process. The Lambiotte, DPC and Carbonex technologies were considered.

The review considers the environmental problem of generation, accumulation and utilization of waste tires in Ukraine and the world. It is established that waste tires can serve as a valuable raw material for obtaining fuel components and technical/individual chemicals for further industrial processing. One of the promising methods for the rational utilization of waste tires may be their pyrolysis. The pyrolysis process of waste tires produces gaseous, liquid and solid carbonized residue. At the same time, there is no ideal universal technology for the use of waste tire pyrolysis products without preliminary treatment/purification methods. The main characteristics, processing methods and applications of products obtained from the pyrolysis of waste tires are briefly considered.
