Artificial intelligence and machine learning are poised to influence nearly every aspect of the human condition, and cardiology is not an exception to this trend. This paper provides a guide for clinicians on relevant aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning, reviews selected applications of these methods in cardiology to date, and identifies how cardiovascular medicine could incorporate artificial intelligence in the future. In particular, the paper first reviews predictive modeling concepts relevant to cardiology such as feature selection and frequent pitfalls such as improper dichotomization. Second, it discusses common algorithms used in supervised learning and reviews selected applications in cardiology and related disciplines. Third, it describes the advent of deep learning and related methods collectively called unsupervised learning, provides contextual examples both in general medicine and in cardiovascular medicine, and then explains how these methods could be applied to enable precision cardiology and improve patient outcomes.

Deep learning in remote sensing has received considerable international hype, but it is mostly limited to the evaluation of optical data. Although deep learning has been introduced in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing, despite successful first attempts, its huge potential remains locked. In this article, we provide an introduction to the most relevant deep learning models and concepts, point out possible pitfalls by analyzing special characteristics of SAR data, review the state of the art of deep learning applied to SAR, summarize available benchmarks, and recommend some important future research directions. With this effort, we hope to stimulate more research in this interesting yet underexploited field and to pave the way for the use of deep learning in big SAR data processing workflows.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), in combination with the Internet of Things (IoT), called (AIoT), an emerging trend in industrial applications, is capable of intelligent decision-making with self-driven analytics. With its extensive usage in diverse scenarios, IoT devices generate bulk data contrived by attackers to disrupt normal operations and services. Hence, there is a need for proactive data analysis to prevent cyber-attacks and crimes. To investigate crimes involving Electronic Mail (e-mail), analysis of both the header and the email body is required since the semantics of communication helps to identify the source of potential evidence. With the continued growth of data shared via emails, investigators now face the daunting challenge of extracting the required semantic information from the bulks of emails, thereby causing a delay in the investigation process. This gives an edge to the criminal in erasing their footprints of malicious acts. The existing keyword-based search techniques and filtration often result in extraneous, short sequence emails, which skips meaningful information. To overcome the above limitation, we propose a novel efficient approach named SeFACED that uses Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based Gated Recurrent Neural Network (GRU) for multiclass email classification. SeFACED not only works on short sequences but with long dependencies of 1000+ characters as well. SeFACED focuses on tuning LSTM based GRU parameters to attain the best performance and with assessment by comparing it with traditional machine learning, deep learning models, and state-of-the-art studies on the subject. Experimental results on self-extended benchmark datasets exhibit that SeFACED effectively outperforms existing methods while keeping the classification process robust and reliable.

We formulate a deterministic epidemic model for the spread of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19). We have included asymptomatic, quarantine and isolation compartments in the model, as studies have stressed upon the importance of these population groups on the transmission of the disease. We calculate the basic reproduction number R0 and show that for R0<1 the disease dies out and for R0>1 the disease is endemic. Using sensitivity analysis we establish that R0 is most sensitive to the rate of quarantine and isolation and that a high level of quarantine needs to be maintained as well as isolation to control the disease. Based on this we devise optimal quarantine and isolation strategies, noting that high levels need to be maintained during the early stages of the outbreak. Using data from the Wuhan outbreak, which has nearly run its course we estimate that R0=1.87 which while in agreement with other estimates in the literature is on the lower side.

Automated software defect prediction is an important and fundamental activity in the domain of software development. However, modern software systems are inherently large and complex with numerous correlated metrics that capture different aspects of the software components. This large number of correlated metrics makes building a software defect prediction model very complex. Thus, identifying and selecting a subset of metrics that enhance the software defect prediction method's performance are an important but challenging problem that has received little attention in the literature. The main objective of this paper is to identify significant software metrics, to build and evaluate an automated software defect prediction model. We propose two novel hybrid software defect prediction models to identify the significant attributes (metrics) using a combination of wrapper and filter techniques. The novelty of our approach is that it embeds the metric selection and training processes of software defect prediction as a single process while reducing the measurement overhead significantly. Different wrapper approaches were combined, including SVM and ANN, with a maximum relevance filter approach to find the significant metrics. A filter score was injected into the wrapper selection process in the proposed approaches to direct the search process efficiently to identify significant metrics. Experimental results with real defect-prone software data sets show that the proposed hybrid approaches achieve significantly compact metrics (i.e., selecting the most significant metrics) with high prediction accuracy compared with conventional wrapper or filter approaches. The performance of the proposed framework has also been verified using a statistical multivariate quality control process using multivariate exponentially weighted moving average. The proposed framework demonstrates that the hybrid heuristic can guide the metric selection process in a computationally efficient way by integrating the intrinsic characteristics from the filters into the wrapper and using the advantages of both the filter and wrapper approaches.
