Modern culture, strongly influenced by the growth of sectors such as the fashion and textile industries, has generated an environmental trend that is difficult to reverse. It is estimated that between 60 and 70% of the dyes used in these sectors are synthetic, which offer great versatility, a low cost, and a broad spectrum of colors, making them indispensable in many sectors. Among these synthetic dyes, azo dyes stand out due to their excellent chromophoric properties, structural stability, and ease of synthesis. However, these compounds are considered xenobiotics with a strong recalcitrant potential. This review article comprehensively examines the biodegradation potential of azo contaminants by microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and consortia, using the PRISMA 2020 methodology. In this regard, this study identified 720 peer-reviewed articles on this topic that are outstanding. The analysis of these studies focused on the effect of parameters such as pH, temperature, and exposure time, as well as the enzymatic degradation pathways associated with the degradation efficiency of these contaminants. For example, the results identified that microorganisms such as Meyerozyma guilliermondii, Trametes versicolor, Pichia kudriavzevi, Chlorella vulgaris, and Candida tropicalis possess significant potential for degrading azo dyes (up to 90%). This degradative efficiency was attributed to the high enzymatic activity that cleaves the azo bonds of these contaminants through specialized enzymes, such as azoreductases, laccases, and peroxidases. Furthermore, the results highlight synergistic effects or metabolic cooperation between species that enhance the biodegradation of these contaminants, suggesting an eco-friendly alternative for environmental remediation.

The greenhouse effect and global warming, driven by the accumulation of pollutants, such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and CO2, are primarily caused by the combustion of fossil fuels and volcanic eruptions. These phenomena represent an international crisis that negatively impacts human health and the environment. Several studies have reported novel carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, promising solutions. Notable methods include chemical absorption using solvents, and the development of functionalized porous materials, such as MCM-41, impregnated with amines like polyethyleneimine. These technologies have demonstrated high capture capacity and thermal stability; however, they face challenges related to recyclability and high operating costs. In parallel, biodegradable polymers and hydrogels present sustainable alternatives with a lower environmental impact, although their industrial scalability remains limited. This review comprehensively analyzes CO2 capture methods, focusing on silica-based porous supports, polymers, hydrogels, and emerging techniques, like CCUS and MOFs, while including traditional methods and a bibliometric analysis to update the field’s scientific dynamics. With increasing investigations focused on developing new CCUS technologies, this study highlights a growing interest in eco-friendly alternatives. A bibliometric analysis of 903 articles published between 2010 and 2024 provides an overview of current research on environmentally friendly carbon capture technologies. Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and India are leading research efforts in this field, emphasizing the importance of scientific collaboration. Despite these advancements, implementing these technologies in industrial sectors with high greenhouse gas emissions remains scarce. This underscores the need for public policies and financing to promote their development and application in these sectors. Future research should prioritize materials with high capture capacity, efficient transformation, and valorization of CO2 while promoting circular economy approaches and decarbonizing challenging sectors, such as energy and transportation. Integrating environmentally friendly materials, energy optimization, and sustainable strategies is essential to position these technologies as key tools in the fight against climate change.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are plastic particles of concern worldwide as they negatively affect the environment and human health. The interactions of microorganisms with microplastics and nanoplastics are different. On one hand, microorganisms might biodegrade MPs/NPs through enzymes, but on the other hand, they serve as vehicles to spread diseases or negatively affect their viability. As a result, several studies have reported disturbances in soil balance and negative impacts on geochemical cycles. With an increasing number of investigations into microorganisms and their interactions with MPs and NPs, this study demonstrates a growing interest in biodegradable alternatives. A bibliometric analysis of 719 documents published from 2010 to December 2021 presents the research landscape on the interaction of microplastics and nanoplastics with microorganisms. The study shows that China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany lead the scientific production on this topic. However, in situ studies of large-scale pilot applications in the environment are scarce. More research funding from governments in the form of national action that stimulates national and international cooperation through universities, institutes, and industries is required. There is an urgent need for studies focusing on the degradation mechanisms of various microorganisms through the characterization of enzymes involved in the chemical modification of these emerging contaminants (MPs/NPs) with transparent standard methodologies. Moreover, there is no standardization for MP/NP extraction or characterization methodologies for different environments, especially in atmosphere. The patent need for alternative pathways for MP/NP degradation is evident, using microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and a consortium (peripheral biofilms) to mitigate the negative impact of the constantly increasing anthropogenic MP/NP pollutants in the world.

Bone defects caused by various traumas and diseases such as osteoporosis, which affects bone density, and osteosarcoma, which affects the integrity of bone structure, are now well known. Given this situation, several innovative research projects have been reported to improve orthopedic methods and technologies that positively contribute to the regeneration of affected bone tissue, representing a significant advance in regenerative medicine. This review article comprehensively analyzes the transition from existing methods and technologies for implants and bone tissue regeneration to innovative biomaterials. These biomaterials have been of great interest in the last decade due to their physicochemical characteristics, which allow them to overcome the most common limitations of traditional grafting methods, such as the availability of biomaterials and the risk of rejection after their application in regenerative medicine. This could be achieved through an exhaustive study of the applications and properties of various materials with potential applications in regenerative medicine, such as using magnetic nanoparticles and hydrogels sensitive to external stimuli, including pH and temperature. In this regard, this review article describes the most relevant compounds used in bone tissue regeneration, promoting the integration of these biomaterials with the affected area’s bone structure, thereby allowing for regeneration and preventing amputation. Additionally, the types of interactions between biomaterials and mesenchymal stem cells and their effects on bone tissue are discussed, which is critical for developing biomaterials with optimal regenerative properties. Furthermore, the mechanisms of action of the various biomaterials that enhance osteoconduction and osteoinduction, ensuring the success of orthopedic therapies, are analyzed. This enables the treatment of bone defects tailored to each patient’s condition, thereby avoiding limb amputation. Consequently, a promising future for regenerative medicine is emerging, with various therapies that could revolutionize the management of bone defects, offering more efficient and safer solutions.

Agricultural food production is greatly affected by postharvest diseases worldwide, such as the diseases caused by Alternaria species, which are very common in several crops. The management of fungal infections around the world largely relies on fungicides. In this context, the control of diseases such as early blight caused by Alternaria solani in potatoes and Alternaria linariae in tomatoes has mainly consisted of the application of fungicides, with negative impacts on the environment and human health. Recently, the application of ‘omics’ and gene editing through the CRISPR/Cas9 system and RNAi technologies demonstrated their effectiveness as emerging greener alternatives for controlling phytopathogenic fungi. Additionally, coatings based on essential oils and microbial antagonists suggest alternative strategies for controlling phytopathogenic fungi that are respectful of the environment. This review presents an exhaustive literature review focused on using greener alternatives to the traditional management of postharvest diseases associated with Alternaria species, such as inhibiting pathogenicity from their phytopathogenic genes using gene editing based on CRISPR/Cas9 and RNAi technologies. The review also presents coatings based on essential oils and microbial antagonists as greener strategies for Alternaria control. Biological processes of maximum efficiency can replace chemical methods for controlling phytopathogenic fungi, preserving healthy conditions in agricultural lands and ecosystems. This is possible with the rise of ‘omic’ technologies, the CRISPR/Cas9 tool, and RNAi technology. Greener control methods of Alternaria fungi can increase agricultural production, improving the economy and global health.

Cancer is a severe disease that, in 2022, caused more than 9.89 million deaths worldwide. One worrisome type of cancer is bone cancer, such as osteosarcoma and Ewing tumors, which occur more frequently in infants. This study shows an active interest in the use of graphene oxide and its derivatives in therapy against bone cancer. We present a systematic review analyzing the current state of the art related to the use of GO in treating osteosarcoma, through evaluating the existing literature. In this sense, studies focused on GO-based nanomaterials for potential applications against osteosarcoma were reviewed, which has revealed that there is an excellent trend toward the use of GO-based nanomaterials, based on their thermal and anti-cancer activities, for the treatment of osteosarcoma through various therapeutic approaches. However, more research is needed to develop highly efficient localized therapies. It is suggested, therefore, that photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and the use of nanocarriers should be considered as non-invasive, more specific, and efficient alternatives in the treatment of osteosarcoma. These options present promising approaches to enhance the effectiveness of therapy while also seeking to reduce side effects and minimize the damage to surrounding healthy tissues. The bibliometric analysis of photothermal and photochemical treatments of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide from January 2004 to December 2022 extracted 948 documents with its search strategy, mainly related to research papers, review papers, and conference papers, demonstrating a high-impact field supported by the need for more selective and efficient bone cancer therapies. The central countries leading the research are the United States, Iran, Italy, Germany, China, South Korea, and Australia, with strong collaborations worldwide. At the same time, the most-cited papers were published in journals with impact factors of more than 6.0 (2021), with more than 290 citations. Additionally, the journals that published the most on the topic are high impact factor journals, according to the analysis performed, demonstrating the high impact of the research field.
