Facial makeup cosmetics are commonly used products that are applied to the skin, and their ingredients come into contact with it for many years. Consequently, they should only contain substances that are considered safe or used within an allowable range of established concentrations. According to current European laws, all cosmetics approved for use should be entirely safe for their users, and the responsibility for this lies with manufacturers, distributors, and importers. However, the use of cosmetics can be associated with undesirable effects due to the presence of certain chemical substances. An analysis of 50 random facial makeup cosmetics commercially available on the European Union market and manufactured in six European countries was carried out, concerning the presence of substances with potential carcinogenic properties, as described in recent years in the literature. Nine types of facial makeup cosmetics were selected, and their compositions, as declared on the labels, were analyzed. The carcinogens were identified with information present in the European CosIng database and according to the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee’s (IRAC) classification. As a result, the following potential carcinogens were identified: parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben), ethoxylated compounds (laureth-4, lautreth-7, or ethylene glycol polymers known as PEG), formaldehyde donors (imidazolidinyl urea, quaternium 15, and DMDM hydantoin), and ethanolamine and their derivatives (triethanolamine and diazolidinyl urea), as well as carbon and silica. In conclusion, all of the analyzed face makeup cosmetics contain potential carcinogenic substances. The literature review confirmed the suppositions regarding the potential carcinogenic effects of selected cosmetic ingredients. Therefore, it seems necessary to carry out studies on the long-term exposure of compounds present in cosmetics and perhaps introduce stricter standards and laws regulating the potential presence of carcinogens and their activity in cosmetics.

While adaptogens are popular in dietary supplements for their health-promoting properties, their safety is compromised by the risk of heavy metal contamination, a threat amplified by inconsistent regulatory standards. This study aimed to assess the extent of heavy metal contamination in adaptogenic supplements on the Polish market and evaluate their compliance with international safety limits. Eleven commercially available supplements (tablets, powders, dried materials) containing Withania somnifera, Rhodiola rosea, Panax ginseng, and Schisandra chinensis were analyzed for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and other elements using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and mercury analysis (AMA 254). Results demonstrated widespread contamination, primarily with Pb and Ni. In processed forms (tablets and dried fruits), Pb concentrations exceeded permissible limits by up to 235%, while Ni levels were exceeded by up to 321%. Schisandra chinensis preparations showed the highest contamination levels. Furthermore, raw materials from India contained significantly higher Ni concentrations than those from China (p < 0.01). These findings reveal that a majority of the tested supplements fail to meet toxicological safety criteria, posing a significant health risk to consumers. This underscores a critical regulatory gap and highlights the urgent need for harmonized standards and stringent quality control for dietary supplements.

Green tea catechins are bioactive polyphenolic compounds that possess a number of biological activities and potential health benefits. This review will focus on discussing the effects of green tea catechins, with a particular emphasis on clinical studies that evaluate their anticancer potential. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), either as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with conventional anticancer therapies, represents a promising alternative strategy for the management of leukaemia. This review was based on a search of the scientific sources indexed in the databases PubMed and Scopus using the following keywords: ‘Camellia sinensis’, ‘tea catechins’, ‘anticancer’, ‘antioxidant’, ‘hematological cancer’, and ‘leukaemia’ in combination. A deeper comprehension of the multifaceted mechanisms and findings of research could facilitate the development of novel strategies and the integration of green tea catechins into clinical practice, thus enhancing treatment outcomes for patients with leukaemia.

Gold nanoparticles have been identified as a promising avenue for the development of drug carriers, particularly in the context of antimicrobial drug delivery, where limited solubility represents a significant challenge. The ability of gold nanoparticles to penetrate biofilms and disrupt fungal cell membranes makes them an effective tool to support antifungal therapy, especially against resistant strains. Gold nanoparticles also demonstrate synergistic effects with chemotherapeutics and can influence the release profile of the active substances. This study aimed to develop a topical hydrogel drug formulation containing itraconazole (ITZ), with the addition of gold nanoparticles, to enhance its therapeutic properties. Due to ITZ’s poor water solubility, three types of the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of different sizes were synthesized and subsequently coated with itraconazole. The resulting formulations were incorporated into carbopol gels and their ability to diffuse through semipermeable membranes was assessed. The findings demonstrated that the combination of gold nanoparticles and itraconazole elevated the diffusion coefficient to twice the level observed in gels without nanoparticles. Furthermore, the combined effect of gold nanoparticles and itraconazole against a reference Candida albicans strain was investigated. The combination of gold nanoparticles and itraconazole demonstrated a growth-inhibitory effect on this strain, indicating that this formulation could potentially be employed in the treatment of fungal infections. The study confirms that hydrogels with itraconazole and gold nanoparticles can be obtained, offering enhanced drug diffusion.

An alcohol hangover is a complex set of adverse symptoms that occur after excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. Hangovers are not solely caused by ethanol, but mainly by its toxic metabolites, such as acetaldehyde and acetic acid. Most of the negative symptoms occur when the concentration of alcohol in the blood decreases after drinking. Given that a large percentage of people consume alcohol and experience negative effects from its consumption, potential supplementation to help eliminate these adverse effects has been proposed. One promising ingredient is ginseng, which has been used in Eastern culture and traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. The aim of this study was to present the potential of Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. as an aid for the adverse effects of alcohol consumption and its protective effect on liver function. The literature analysis was based on data indexed in medical databases PubMed, Scopus, and Medline since 2010, using keywords such as "Panax ginseng," "hangover," "alcohol consumption," and "metabolism," connected by the logical conjuction “and.” The analysis confirmed the effectiveness of P. ginseng in the treatment and prevention of hangovers. Preparations containing P. ginseng can support ethanol metabolism by inducing enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and the cytochrome P450 isoform 2E1 system. An additional advantage of using P. ginseng may be its hepatoprotective effect.
