The issue of ever-increasing amounts of waste activated sludge (WAS) produced from biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is pointed out. WAS can be effectively reduced in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process, where methanogens break down organic matter and simultaneously produce biogas in the absence of oxygen, mainly methane and CO2. Biomethane can then be effectively used in gas turbines to produce electricity and power a part of WWTPs. Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) has been identified as a potential technique that can improve the AD process and enhance biogas yield. Rotary generators of hydrodynamic cavitation (RGHCs) that have gained considerable popularity due to their promising results and scalability are presented. Operation, their underlying mechanisms, parameters for performance evaluation, and their division based on geometry of cavitation generation units (CGUs) are presented. Their current use in the field of wastewater treatment is presented, with the focus on WAS pre/treatment. In addition, comparison of achieved results with RGHCs relevant to the enhancement of AD process is presented.

This study investigates the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of supercritical open channel junction flow using two different turbulence models: k-ω shear stress transport (SST) and k-ω SST scale-adaptive simulation (SAS), in conjunction with Volume of Fluid (VOF) and mixture multiphase models. The efficacy of these models in predicting the intricate free surface fluctuation and free surface elevation in a supercritical junction is evaluated through a comprehensive analysis of time-averaged free surface data obtained from CFD simulations and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) measurements. The dimensionless Reynolds (Re) and Froude (Fr) numbers of the investigated scenario were Fr = 9 and Re = 5.1 × 104 for the main channel, and Fr = 6 and Re = 3.3 × 104 for the side channel. The results of the analysis demonstrated a satisfactory level of agreement with the experimental data. However, certain limitations associated with both CFD and LIDAR were identified. Specifically, the CFD performance was limited by the model’s incapacity to consider small-scale turbulent effects and to model air bubbles smaller than the cell size while the LIDAR measurements were limited by instrument range, inability to provide insight into what is happening below the water surface, and blind spots. Nonetheless, the k-ω SST turbulent model with the VOF multiphase model most closely matched the LIDAR results.

In this paper, the process of mineral fiber formation was investigated experimentally on a two-wheel spinner by means of high-speed imaging. Analogue isomalt melt was fiberized at different rotational speeds of spinner wheels, melt flow rates and impingement positions so that the fiberization process was dynamically similar to an industrial mineral wool production process. Images of fiber formation and transport reveal highly complex dynamics of these processes, as fibers mostly occur in form of 3D mutually intertwined structures such as clusters, strands and veils periodically shedding from the melt film. Despite the complexity of flow structures, there is a clear trend of increasing mean fiber length and expansion angle of the coaxial fiber-laden flow as the Weber number and the ratio of melt film velocity to blowing air velocity are increased. The fiberization efficiency (ratio of fiber mass deposited on the collecting mesh to the mass of melt poured) is affected by the impingement position and flow rate of melt as well as the Weber number of melt film. The optimum efficiency was attained at 30° (1 o’clock) impingement position and the ratio of melt film to blowing air flow velocity close to unity.

Groundwater, a critical source of drinking water, plays an essential role in global biogeochemical cycles, yet its microbial ecosystems remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in pristine karst aquifers. This study conducted high-resolution profiling of microbial communities and environmental parameters in two representative alpine karst aquifers in Slovenia: Idrijska Bela and Krajcarca. Monthly groundwater samples from the Krajcarca spring and Idrijska Bela borehole over a 14-month period were analyzed using whole-metagenome sequencing (WMS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and isotopic analysis. The results revealed stable hydrochemical conditions with clear spatial differences driven by bedrock composition and groundwater residence time. Bacterial communities displayed strong correlations with hydrochemical parameters, while archaeal communities exhibited temporal stability. Functional gene profiles mirrored bacterial patterns, emphasizing the influence of environmental gradients on metabolic potential. No significant temporal changes were detected across two sampling campaigns (2016–2023), highlighting the resilience of these aquifers. This work establishes a valuable baseline for understanding pristine groundwater microbiomes and informs future monitoring and water quality management strategies.
