Transmission line fault detection using drones provides real-time assessment of the operational status of transmission equipment, and therefore it has immense importance in ensuring stable functioning of the transmission lines. Currently, identification of transmission line equipment relies predominantly on manual inspections that are susceptible to the influence of natural surroundings, resulting in sluggishness and a high rate of false detections. In view of this, in this study, we propose an insulator defect recognition algorithm based on a YOLOv5 model with a new lightweight network as the backbone network, combining noise reduction and target detection. First, we propose a new noise reduction algorithm, i.e., the adaptive neighborhood-weighted median filtering (NW-AMF) algorithm. This algorithm employs a weighted summation technique to determine the median value of the pixel point’s neighborhood, effectively filtering out noise from the captured aerial images. Consequently, this approach significantly mitigates the adverse effects of varying noise levels on target detection. Subsequently, the RepVGG lightweight network structure is improved to the newly proposed lightweight structure called RcpVGG-YOLOv5. This structure facilitates single-branch inference, multi-branch training, and branch normalization, thereby improving the quantization performance while simultaneously striking a balance between target detection accuracy and speed. Furthermore, we propose a new loss function, i.e., Focal EIOU, to replace the original CIOU loss function. This optimization incorporates a penalty on the edge length of the target frame, which improves the contribution of the high-quality target gradient. This modification effectively addresses the issue of imbalanced positive and negative samples for small targets, suppresses background positive samples, and ultimately enhances the accuracy of detection. Finally, to align more closely with real-world engineering applications, the dataset utilized in this study consists of machine patrol images captured by the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) of the Yunnan Power Supply Bureau Company. The experimental findings demonstrate that the proposed algorithm yields notable improvements in accuracy and inference speed compared to YOLOv5s, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Specifically, the improved algorithm achieves a 3.7% increase in accuracy and a 48.2% enhancement in inference speed compared to those of YOLOv5s. Similarly, it achieves a 2.7% accuracy improvement and a 33.5% increase in inference speed compared to those of YOLOv7, as well as a 1.5% accuracy enhancement and a 13.1% improvement in inference speed compared to those of YOLOv8. These results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through ablation experiments. Consequently, the method presented in this paper exhibits practical applicability in the detection of aerial images of transmission lines within complex environments. In future research endeavors, it is recommended to continue collecting aerial images for continuous iterative training, to optimize the model further, and to conduct in-depth investigations into the challenges associated with detecting small targets. Such endeavors hold significant importance for the advancement of transmission line detection.

Battery capacity is an important metric for evaluating and predicting the health status of lithium-ion batteries. In order to determine the answer, the battery’s capacity must be, with some difficulty, directly measured online with existing methods. This paper proposes a multi-dimensional health indicator (HI) battery state of health (SOH) prediction method involving the analysis of the battery equivalent circuit model and constant current discharge characteristic curve. The values of polarization resistance, polarization capacitance, and initial discharge resistance are identified as the health indicators reflective of the battery’s state of health. Moreover, the retention strategy genetic algorithm (e-GA) selects the optimal voltage drop segment, and the corresponding equal voltage drop discharge time is also used as a health indicator. Based on the above health indicator selection strategy, a battery SOH prediction model based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and LSTM neural network is constructed, and its accuracy is validated. The experimental results demonstrate that the suggested strategy is accurate and generalizable. Compared with the prediction model with single health indicator input, the accuracy is increased by 0.79%.

With the development of UAV automatic cruising along power transmission lines, intelligent defect detection in aerial images has become increasingly important. In the process of target detection for aerial photography of transmission lines, insulator defects often pose challenges due to complex backgrounds, resulting in noisy images and issues such as slow detection speed, leakage, and the misidentification of small-sized targets. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an insulator defect detection algorithm called DFCG_YOLOv5, which focuses on improving both the accuracy and speed by enhancing the network structure and optimizing the loss function. Firstly, the input part is optimized, and a High-Speed Adaptive Median Filtering (HSMF) algorithm is introduced to preprocess the images captured by the UAV system, effectively reducing the noise interference in target detection. Secondly, the original Ghost backbone structure is further optimized, and the DFC attention mechanism is incorporated to strike a balance between the target detection accuracy and speed. Additionally, the original CIOU loss function is replaced with the Poly Loss, which addresses the issue of imbalanced positive and negative samples for small targets. By adjusting the parameters for different datasets, this modification effectively suppresses background positive samples and enhances the detection accuracy. To align with real-world engineering applications, the dataset utilized in this study consists of unmanned aircraft system machine patrol images from the Yunnan Power Supply Bureau Company. The experimental results demonstrate a 9.2% improvement in the algorithm accuracy and a 26.2% increase in the inference speed compared to YOLOv5s. These findings hold significant implications for the practical implementation of target detection in engineering scenarios.

Operation above acceptable limits in terms of current, voltage, and temperature can lead to lithium batteries overheating, increasing the risk of thermal runaway, which can also degrade battery materials more quickly, reducing overall lifespan. Estimating the state of power (SOP) of a battery is necessary for battery safety control and preventing operation above acceptable limits. However, the SOP is influenced by coupled multiple parameters including the state of charge, state of health, and core temperature, which make it challenging to estimate comprehensively. Based on the electro-thermal model, this study proposes a multi-parameter coupled method for comprehensively estimating the SOP considering the core temperature. This method provides a robust approach to accurately assessing the SOP across varying core temperatures, states of charge (SoC), and voltage levels. The combination of maximum likelihood estimation, adaptive genetic algorithms for parameter identification, and the unscented Kalman filter for state estimation was found to enhance the accuracy and robustness of battery models. The results show that the battery core temperature and terminal voltage are important and the main limitation on the SOP, respectively. This study lays a strong foundation for effective energy management and life extension of lithium batteries, particularly in high-temperature environments.

Accurate detection of underground grounding lines remains a significant technical challenge due to their deep burial and small cross-sectional dimensions, which cause signal scattering in heterogeneous soil media. This results in blurred features in GPR B-scan images, impeding reliable target identification. To address this limitation, we propose GPR-TSBiNet, an architecture incorporating two key model innovations. We introduce GPR-Transformer (GPR-Trans), a multi-branch backbone network specifically designed for GPR B-scan processing. In the neck stage, we develop the Spatial-Depth Converted Bidirectional Feature Pyramid Network (SC-BiFPN), which integrates SPD-ADown to mitigate feature loss caused by traditional pooling-based downsampling. We employ Shape-IoU as the loss function to enhance boundary detail preservation for small targets. Comparative experiments demonstrate that GPR-TSBiNet outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) models YOLOv11 and YOLOv10 in detection accuracy, achieving an AP0.5 improvement of 11.6% over YOLOv11X and 27.4% over YOLOv10X. Notably, the model improves small-target APsmall to 49.4 ± 0.7%, representing a 13.4% increase over the SOTA YOLOv11 model. Finally, real-world GPR validation experiments are conducted, confirming that GPR-TSBiNet provides a reliable solution for underground grounding line detection in GPR-based target recognition.

This paper addresses the issues of Beidou navigation signal interference and blockage in complex substation environments by proposing an intelligent collaborative navigation model based on Beidou high-precision navigation and binocular vision recognition. The model is designed with Beidou navigation providing global positioning references and binocular vision enabling local environmental perception through a collaborative fusion strategy. The Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) is used to integrate data from multiple sensors to ensure high-precision positioning and dynamic obstacle avoidance capabilities for robots in complex environments. Simulation results show that the Beidou–Binocular Cooperative Navigation (BBCN) model achieves a global positioning error of less than 5 cm in non-interference scenarios, and an error of only 6.2 cm under high-intensity electromagnetic interference, significantly outperforming the single Beidou model’s error of 40.2 cm. The path planning efficiency is close to optimal (with an efficiency factor within 1.05), and the obstacle avoidance success rate reaches 95%, while the system delay remains within 80 ms, meeting the real-time requirements of industrial scenarios. The innovative fusion approach enables unprecedented reliability for autonomous robot inspection in high-voltage environments, offering significant practical value in reducing human risk exposure, lowering maintenance costs, and improving inspection efficiency in power industry applications. This technology enables continuous monitoring of critical power infrastructure that was previously difficult to automate due to navigation challenges in electromagnetically complex environments.
